Cel shading... Not cel shading... Call it what you want. Here's how I make my props look like they're from a video game that's recreating the look of a comic book.

Oh, look! Another video that reminds me of how I don't have an artistic bone in my body. Sigh. But keep it up man, love this.

You certainly can. I use my airbrush on fabrics because it's faster and the colors can be more bold.

Loving the videos. Keep it up! I'll be able to use these tips for painting my Nerf gun mod. Right now, it looks too new and too much like Iron Man. Need to out line everything and dirty it up. Good to know that you need to do the borders last. I'll be cheating for the line detailing for the lines imprinted in the gun. Going to get a paint pen for that and practice with the brush for things where neatness doesn't matter as much. Like for making scratches! Thanks again for the cool videos!

Good to hear that this helped! Honestly, even the outlining doesn't have to be perfect lines from a pen. For my Borderlands props, I've cut foam with a straight edge and then gone back and recut it free-hand with some wobble and it looks better that way. Also, for Nerf guns, a black wash can really make the details pop.

I've heard about a black wash before. How exactly do you it? Going through and outlining all the edges was fairly tricky. It didn't come out anywhere near straight and it had plenty of variations in thickness and coverage. I like the way it turned out. Just have to dirty up the gun a little now. When I'm down with that, is it a good idea to hit the gun with a clear coat or do I just leave it alone?

I've done it with acrylics thinned with water. The thinner it is, the lighter the wash will be. Others use oil based paints to create a filthy look because they dry much slower. I find that the variations in thickness look way better for Borderlands props because it loos hand-drawn. That's one of the reasons I prefer to brush my lines on instead of using a Sharpie. Definitely clear coat after a wash. The thinned paint won't want to still well on its own.

Hey, I just put up a new video on Borderlands painting. If you haven't painted your Nerf already, it'll really help a lot!

Should the paint I'm using the same consistency as for my airbrush or thicker?

I use these paints right out of the bottle. But I've started using them through my airbrush too with a little thinner. I mention it in my second Boderlands paining video.
