Do you want to know how to open a game on a second monitor using steam? You can open steam into big picture mode, then go to settings. Choose the resolution option and there will be a setting under here to choose the monitor to open the games on. This will be the same screen as big picture mode. You can also go to the desktop on your PC, then go to display settings and choose the monitor you want to open games on and then choose make this my main display. Also, there will be options in most games to choose the monitor. ...

This is so unhelpful. This does not allow you to launch your game on the second monitor. This basically changes what monitor is your primary one. This changes the taskbar as well as everything a primary monitor does for you.

Once you setup Steam in Big Picture Mode to the monitor that you want, you just need to change it back to the original steam layout and go back to Big Picture when you want to play a game on that desired monitor.

@@MLGWuba no dude that's not how it works, it changes your primary monitor until you change it back in windows settings. it doesn't even change it back after you exit big picture mode

I'd like to thank you and all of the team behind Steam for this neat feature. I was thinking about my monitor setup as I want my monitor to remain main, but all of the games to run on my TV. And I'm actually using Big Picture with my Xbox Controller, so now I'm just pressing xbox button twice and I'm ready to play any game on my TV. all games should have the option to choose which specific monitor you want it on, i like to keep my main display free so i can always access my system tray, volume controls, clock and notifications without the game being in the way, unfortunately games default to main display which is what i dont want

This helped for me trying to get a specific game to play in full screen mode on my second screen. I used the steam option since the other ways always put the game on the wrong screen if I wanted it full screen. Worked windowed but then I hated the bar at the top when trying to stream.

Steam Big Picture mode forces your 'secondary monitor' into the 'main monitor' and states that games can ONLY launch from main monitor- which makes it pointless for this. (just make your windows main monitor you desired monitor instead of making Steam BPM force it later) This doesn't solve the problem of "I have # monitors, I would like my MAIN monitor to be 'monitor 1' but I would like my GAMES to play on 'monitor 2' "

This. And it's driving me mad that there isn't a simple way of having a monitor be your main, and have the game run on a second monitor, unless specifically supported in that game's settings.

@@PrototypeOnyx Only solution that i found - press Win-Shift-Left/Right in game to switch monitor. It works at least with borderless mode. Not a perfect, but it is what it is.

@@MrGranaldo Thanks for the reply. Yeah, that usually works, but for some really bad PC ports, like the Tales series, it's a real pain, especially since the monitors have different resolutions. The max resolution available in game is the one of the main monitor, so it either stretches the game on the second one, or it makes a smaller window with black borders around it to make it look fullscreen (if I force the higher resolution through .ini). It's really annoying, but yeah, it is what it is.

I usually play games in "Borderless Windowed Mode". You can actually move the windows across all your monitors using: Windows Key + Shift + Arrow Keys This way you can't change where the game should open on but it gets the job done and it doesn't even take a second. You can also move every other window like this, your browser, discord etc.

Guys you gotta restart big picture mode in between monitor changes now, if it wasn't already like that. Especially if it just says Default at first, you have to restart big picture mode before you launch your game, and if you see all the icons on the desktop go to the second monitor, you're good. When you exit big picture mode your primary monitor will return to normal.

My man, I've been looking for this for a long time. Thank you! However, it may not work on some games. Thus far I've succesfully use this technique to launch State of Decay on my TV (I got 4 monitors, BTW, including one big ass 4K TV) but when I tried to lanuch Resident Evil 4 (Not the remake one) it keep glitching between my primary (middle monitory) and 4th monitor (the one on my right) though the setting in Big Picutre remains the same: preferred monitor is Monitor 2 (the TV). PS. Resident Evil 4 also swtich my main display to Monitor 2 and luanch itself on monitor 2 for no goddamn reason. Nevermind that, I've solved the issue, it is partly because of my stupidity, I did not relaunch big picture mode after making change to the setting. Now it work as intended.

What I am trying to do is make my cheap old LCD monitor as my main monitor for only desktop icons etc and my new 4k C2 LG OLED as my 2nd monitor (only using this one to play games). I want the desktop always on the cheap LCD monitor to prevent burn-in on the OLED and all my game stuff on the OLED. However, I am still having trouble because for some reason Windows 10 keeps lowering the resoluition of my 4k TV into 720p (which is the res of my cheap LCD monitor). Is there any way to pass this?

this doesn't open "a" game on a second monitor it switches ALL games to open on another monitor. what steam client really needs is a way to set a specific game to open on a preferred monitor instead of all of them being on one or another.

I am sorry but none of these options worked. I have a 75hz monitor on my left and a 144hz monitor on my right. I prefer gaming on my right monitor. Steam keeps launching my games on the left monitor no matter what I change. I have done the primary monitor setting in display setting for Windows, and I have tried the big picture mode option as well. Nothing is working.

There's an even faster method, however this does not work with every game. For a lot of games, you can simply just hold windows key + shift + left or right arrow, which will let you swap everything to the other monitor. This works for web pages, and plenty of games, however, keep in mind this does not work for every game out there so you'll have to test which game you want to do it on, and this does not translate well if you have two monitors with different resolutions, like a 1440 screen and a 1080 screen

I do not like Big Picture mode, I just want to, as many humans do, to control how and what my pc and/or other programs do when I say to do so. I mean am I asking too much, for people to have things work [within reason] the way we want? It's several years past 2020 now, it's not 2002, so I would like things to progress as such. I have a main 27" monitor that is here right next to me, but I'm also connected to my 60" 4K TV, which I like to play some games on... why is that difficult?

If I put the game on window mode and drag it to the other monitor I want, it will be stuck at the main monitor's resolution. To make it worse as soon as I click con full screen mode the game crashes.

Yeah I got it to launch on my other monitor but anytime I try to use my mouse it's still locked in the game window and I cannot alt+tab out without the game disappearing and leaving Steam BPM up in the background. This shouldn't be so hard but here we are. Thanks anyway.

All that does is change the main monitor (moving the taskbar) except there's no 4K option.

I haven't played steam for a while and forgot about this... Nice to see that steam is still equally as stupid as it was 2 years ago. Change requests go into the circular filing cabinet I guess (trash bin)

There is an easier way, a simple windows shortcuts does this in one second if that, Windows Key + Shift + Left or Right Arrow Key depending on which direction you want to move the window. For Mac users, buy a windows PC... J/K Pedo Bill Gates doesn't need any more of our money for trips to Epistins Pedo Island, but alas, I digress, I would assume you simply replace the "windows key" with the command key on Macs. So: Command + Shift + Right or Left Arrow Key depending on which direction you wan the monitor to move.

The settings can open on one monitor, steam itself on the main one, and the game starts on the third. Big Picture brought more trouble than convenience. Too unfinished product. Steam has always been like this
