I drove a CAT 257B in Afghanistan, on and off, for six months. They are incredibly easy to use and extremely versatile, but had quite a few limitations for the work we were doing with it most of the time. It would be great to get in one again, if only for a few minutes.

I will not stop stressing that, even with a back up camera, it is solely on the operator to keep their head on a swivel, because at the end of the day, the operator will be the responsible party for any injuries and/or property damage that shall occur on any jobsite.

Absolutely, with Case and New Holland skid steers being what I mainly operate and keep in mind none have a back up camera , you need to have your head on a swivel. The boom and everything else on the rear of the cab has so many blind spots, look before you reverse basically lol

@@UZI9MMAUTO At the end of the day, you are operating the machine and therefore are responsible for assuming a distracted worker is near your machine.

I've got quite a bit of seat time In several different machines, and I've gotten good at it too, but I can tell you first hand, that experience isn't always everything, things happen sometimes without regard to our critical thinking, sometimes it's inevitable, as a prime example, I was operating a front-end loader a while back, and I was going to move a broken robot that came off of a manufacturing assembly line, and I had to use one for to position the robot arm enough to grab it with both forks, well the robot wasn't having any of it, and tipped my loader and I plum over on our side, there was nothing I could do to correct it due to the weight of the robot completely overtaking the counterweight on the loader. And I wasn't the first. So moral of the story, you can be as safe as you want which I highly recommend,but sometimes you just can't escape inevitability.

So I started a new job recently. At my new job we have a old skid steer we use around the yard for various tasks. I have until now never operated a skid steer what so ever. Thanks to your videos I was able to safely operate our skid steer right out of the gate. Keep up the good work.

@@jarsin4480 it went well till we took it down for maintenance and then ended up rebuilding it. I quickly became skilled at using it. I left that job s few days ago. My new job has forklifts. So onto the forklift safety training videos.

Thank you for having this video! It may be the basics for some, but this trained me so I could rent a skid loader and move some materials. It felt fantastic as the guy that delivered the loader as he was giving me the basics, I was able to tell him other options for the programming buttons that he did not know! I "trained the trainer!" 😀

This is a great helpful video. I am renting a skid steer this weekend and have been a little apprehensive about operating it. Your tutorial is right to the point and has given me some confidence to be able to operate it properly. 😁

@joea104 it went well. The delivered, unloaded and gave me a short tutorial. Took a little bit to get used to the controls, but in the end I was able to bring my property back to life. I rented the brushcutter attachment and it ate small bushes and trees like they were butter. I highly recommend renting one if you are a do it yourselfer like I am.

It funny the opinion for the Deceleration Pedal function switch. The CAT and International Had the Deceleration Pedal. The CASE had a throttle like a vehicle. The JD 450 Dozers had just a clutch pedal. On Dozers. The CASE had the option of Full throttle if you wanted that. Just saying a little history on Dozers. The BOBCAT control's were really strange. You used your feet, hard to get use too for me. I will say watched a guy who started his Skid steer operator days with Bobcat. He was a pro. The funny thing about are Bobcat, was the Lever control's. On opinion for foot or Lever control's. You pushed the Levers Left to right for all Front Loader operations. That was also strange to get use too. Anyway Thank you for training video. Very Detailed on full operation of a JD skid steer. They are Rated as very powerful Skidsteer for there class.

I haul a lot of the Cat skidsteer's and I don't recall an H-pattern controls on the newer (next-gen) units. They're real jerky when you start them up in the cold and take a while to warm up; once they're warmed up the controls will smooth out. Also, the backup camera have lines on the display screen and sometimes they can be slightly out of alignment... which is to say don't rely solely on the camera to back up. Use your mirrors or better yet, just turn around in place if you need to go in a different direction. Backing up blindly is one of the most dangerous maneuvers you can do. 🙂

Thanks a lot for your great videos! Could you maybe make a video about the basics of hydraulic systems, maybe a little bit how they work and what the common controls are across the different equipment? Things like the hydraulic release you mentioned, or the very basic idea of the throttle. Once you understand it it makes sense, but someone who is completely new might think it is the same thing as in a car where if you press the throttle, you go forward:)

It's not _really_ as simple as the throttle/car relationship - that all depends on what gear you're in, or even if you're in gear at all. The easiest way to describe it is this: Throttle, very simply, controls engine speed. Period. That's all it does - in a car, a boat, a piece of heavy equipment, even in an airplane. *Engine speed* determines how quickly "work" gets done - whether work is travel, or lifting, or manipulating a hydraulic attachment. If the engine is running at higher speed, *_anything_* driven by the engine can also be operated at a higher speed. Wheels/tracks, loaders, outriggers, cab swivels, dozer blades, forklift booms, *_anything_* attached and powered by the engine can move faster with higher throttle.

I just have some questions I'm interested in heavy equipment operator. 1. Did u have any knowledge or idea of what to do when u started? 2. How was it for you when u started as a beginner? 3. How or what helped you to memorize all the controls for all the machines? 4. Lastly, did you do any basic training and then later got a career with no experience and just learned and progressed to where you are now? Thanks for your time and help your videos are great.

Just used one for the first time and this video really helped but the only difficult thing to get used to is backing up, pushing the stick left in reverse makes it go right and vise-versa. This is the only part left out but I'm guessing that you get so used to the way it works that it becomes second nature and you forget that it is counter intuitive to many people.

Is it easier to use the crawler type (as opposed to the one with wheels) when a backhoe attachment is being used on a skid steer and on a slope? or is it just as risky and hard? (I need to use the skid steer to excavate and on a slope that is 25 degrees in some area with some difficult pitch or curves. Thanks for the lesson

One thing that you miss on this video is the NOT SO intuitive backup control. With ISO controls it's important to remember that when you're backing up AND wanting to turn, the intuitive thing would be to steer the back of the loader in the direction that you want to go. BUT what you have to get your mind wrapped around to is that when you back up, you push left or right for which direction you want the front to go--even though you're backing up. It would have been wise to spend a little time on that. But otherwise great video.

That was the hard part for me to get used to as well, I tended to try to look over my shoulder and found that if I used the mirror or backup camera it was easier to get used to, it does seem backwards and takes a lot of getting used to.

I know many guys who had no idea skid steers had seatbelts. "But it has the bar that comes down!" ...Which doesn't hold your upperbody at all.

Hey speaking of skid steers, is there any way to loosen the controls on a new Case SR150 or any hydraulic activated stick controls? They said it will loosen with age but it seems to have gotten stiffer! I have been using an excavator recently with electronic controls which really highlights the difference, but I don't remember putting that much effort into it. It has been unused for a few months until now. chrs

hmmm...not sure if I have the answer to that one. Newer machines usually have an electronic option to adjust the sensitivity of the controls, but not sure how to manually adjust on older units.

Tough call....I think they both make a good machine! To the maintenance point, agree that should be an important consideration and from my experience CAT usually is higher costs there.

Facebook has a skidsteers and attachments page. Its really for operators, but lurking there a while before you post will give you an idea of what machines are in use a lot. There also a skid steer forum on heavy equipment that more indepth than FB can get.
