Fashion Roadman

Peter Do, the Brooklyn-based designer, who honed his modernist tailoring skills under Phoebe Philo (at Celine) , dresses the world’s most in-demand women. But Peter Do now has his sights set on establishing an old-school New York atelier and resurrecting the city’s ailing garment district. LVMH 2020 prize winner, Peter Do is showing no signs of slowing down.

Loved the part when you talked about Peter's career and how he went from Celine to Derek Lam to opening the business with his friends. A lot of young fashion designers are so impatient (myself included) and want to launch their own brand right after graduation. Also enjoyed your constructive criticism near the end of the video. As much as Old Celine is great in the long run it's better if he is known as his own person and the Old Celine doesn't come up as often.

It’s important for young designers to learn that longevity in fashion is a marathon not a sprint. It took people like Martine Rose over 10 years of work to finally break through.

Regarding China, most people don't know that yes China has multiple levels of quality but because of the stigma that country has they all asume that it has to be bad quality but that's not necessary true as you said, these high end brands that produce bad quality garments in China and then sell them for 1000 dollars should be held accountable or just don't buy?... Now, I do love what Peter Do it's doing cause he really seems to focus on sustainability/functionality rather than profit and big production so kudos for that! :)

Totally agree. I have some cashmere sweaters bought in China17 years ago. It is still as perfect as when I got them. All luxury brands have garments made there in different quality factories. A lot of made in italy made at Chinese atelier located in the south of Italy in order to have the label made in Italy. Stop the stigma.

I like how you mentioned the aspect on how western brands use Chinese manufacturing for cheaper made products. If you look at the history of China, you can see the amazing craftsmanship and quality that is associated with their historic garments. It's just that there hasn't been a chance for them to showcase their skills because of the demand and system put in place. Also funny how luxury brands utilize Chinese motifs or silhouettes for their collections yet Chinese manufacturing still gets the bad rep for being "cheap".
@FashionRoadman

Consumers just need to be educated more on the realities of the production processes of many of these brands. I’m hoping I can play my part in removing that stigma associated with only bad quality products coming from China because it just isn’t true at all.

@@FashionRoadman I'm so glad you are talking about the importance of the consumer being aware of fabrication and how essentially social media is breeding a generation of fashion fans who know nothing about quality (nor do they care). If the clothing is made in China, is it a good chance it's still fast fashion? How can we avoid this? I'm trying to become more aware about this.

I know Peter Do probably catches knocks due to his mystique being so similar to Margiela, but thats also never a bad thing. I do though, find a similarity in Do and Margiela’s time at Hermes. Not in style, somewhat in colour palette and those new paddock-esque boots fromthis season. But also the intention when designing. The goal of creating a LASTING wardrobe, that simply needs to be added on to, not done away with at the end of the year. Definitely keeping a very close eye on Peter Do moving forward.

Another great vid thanks 👍 I love Peter Do. I kind of wish Deumeulemeester took him on as the follow up too Meunier. His aesthetic fits in perfectly with the label. At moments he almost perfectly straddles Ann's original designs and Meunier's and fits in perfectly in the middle, but at other times he leans more towards encapsulating and almost elevating Meunier's more dreamy/etheral interpretation instead. He would be a perfect follow on to both of them, whilst bringing his own stamp and vision into play as well. As his own label I would obviously love him to do menswear. He magically has elements of (dare I say it xd) McQueen's hip focused cutting, and a bit of Ann D and a sprinkle of Margiela in their too. A definite Belgium sensibility. It's all quite beautiful.
@FashionRoadman
@FashionRoadman 4 жыл бұрын
This is a very interesting take. I never thought of him when it came to who Meunier’s successor would be but now that you bring it up I can see the similarities for sure. His take on Ann Demeulemeester would certainly be more structured in the silhouette and less delicate & flowy but like you said there are definitely similarities for sure. Maybe he could be a great fit but he doesn’t seem to me to have any intention to work for a big fashion house at the moment.

This is so inspiring! I’m happy to see textile innovation that the average person can wear... His pieces to me represent the slow shift into futuristic design, we’re not ready for literal moving textiles and temperature changing garments and things like that probably exist but things like this are definitely a good start for every day people.

I’m working on starting a clothing line here in China, and the factory I work with also works with a lot of western customers, as well as inbound e-commerce brands. Almost always, we make way better quality products than our western counterparts, yet they sell for 5 times more than we do....I’m not gonna name names, but it seems that 2000%( or more) markups are a common theme in a lot of (not luxury) western brands.

I've been follwing Peter Do for a minute, and am so surprised you're talking about him lol he deserves some shine, glad you're giving it to him! His work is amazing, I'm a boy but I love wearing some womenswear and if you think you've got the look i feel that some of his womenswear can be worn on men. anyways when i can afford it I will cop some of his womenswear pieces for myself for sure. Def one of my faves rn. His philosophy behind the longevity of the clothing and putting the consumer (the busy woman) and the clothing first before anything is so clear in his clothes, but nothing about it is boring -- it all feels elegant & elevated. Sidenote: the carseat shearling jackets are badass! && I REALLY wana see him come out with menswear! PS. great video! I wana find more smaller/newer brands now

Lové thé fact that you actually mention how something made in China can be a high quality product. Actually, as a matter of fact, due to the the long Chinese history in production. Their disadvantage has turned into an advantage meaning due to the high demand and higher production they have out done even European companies. I know as a fact often a lot of brands send their products to China not cus of the production costs but cus they don’t have the technology to do it themselves

I understand your point, but to me name is a part of ones identity. By even just naming his brand after himself, he attached his identity to the brand. Whenever I see Peter Do somewhere, a guy hiding from a camera comes to mind. And if we take Yohji Yamamoto as an example, he is a big part of his brand and still, that doesn't prevent anyone from focusing on his work. Getting to know Yohji Yamamoto as a person, deepens my connection with his brand. What do you think about it?
