How to OVERCOME Fear & Resistance of Making Art | Goodbye Creative Block!

Everyone experiences art block so don't worry! I want to inspire you to actually create, keep on creating, finish projects, paintings and overcome the (inevitable) creative fear once and for all! Creative resistance and the fear of making art is a real thing and works in cycles. It's the ebb and flow of our creativity. It takes courage, persistance, dicipline and dedication to bust through those low points of making. I'm going to share with you everything I do to grow my courage in order to keep on creating and therefore experience the breakthroughs in art and painting that we all crave. I don't actually think fear of the blank page or canvas is the real problem. I believe there is a bigger problem to overcome... and once we can navigate, beat and bust that, we can push through any block once and for all! Thank you so much for keeping me company in our little corner of KZfaq. Love you all to bits, Biggest, Softest, Everythings, Wendy. Xx

I love this video so much. I procrastinate because I'm scared I'm going to be disappointed with the finished project. I'm trying to paint every day because I'm teaching myself watercolors. It's so hard to keep showing up because the paintings are pretty awful, but I'm working on being kinder to myself, so I keep painting. It's weird, but it's like personal growth simultaneous with creative growth.

I hear you intercoastal I do the same w the procrastination because of the fear of disappointment….watercolor is magical I would love to do some acrylic w collage and let my watercolors be a mix of something bigger but I need to get there I love showing up and never giving up I need to adopt that attitude….what helped me was thinking everyone has awful painting that’s what collage and gesso are for to cover that and create some more…..enjoy your journey😊

@@chloegrl1366 I’ve been playing with mixed media for about a year now, and it’s so liberating! Some results are absolute rubbish m but it doesn’t matter, it’s great fun using lots of different media. Thanks Wendy, exactly what I needed to hear, been procrastinating over a number of unfinished paintings during the last couple of crazy years 😉 also, now I understand why. The excitement in the beginning, then life gets in the way and when you get back to it you have lost a bit of the buzz, then the scared to finish in case you mess it up 😱😱

❤❤❤ ...I find finishing difficult because usually (my otherwise procrastinating-master-) mind is already on to the next idea for a drawing, painting etc....Sometimes, I simply have to go with it and start a new project, but other times I make myself finish first....and that is quite hard. Anybody else loving to jump ship like me ? 🫣 Thank you so much for sharing this ❤❤❤

Wow, what perfect timing! I was ill with a sinus infection several weeks ago and did not feel like painting. When I felt better , I was still procrastinating. I couldn’t think of what I wanted to paint. Another week passed - still not painting. At this point , I did not want to paint. “ I’m not very good. It’s a waste of time. No one cares how hard I work”. The internal conversations were spiraling. Finally I made myself paint something. It wasn’t very good but I was back in the groove. I’m so relieved that this “ block” is a common thing and I’m not just a weirdo. Thank you so much ❤️

So many projects started, each one potentially perfect, but once it is finished, really finished, it is what it is, and perhaps not perfect. We all want to create that which we envision, and wish to create those masterpieces. I am now recovering from eye surgery, and now realise that striving for that perfection may no longer be realistic. Instead, enjoying the process, and the fact that i might still create, is a privilege, and completing projects a joy. I may never create a true masterpiece, but will have a body of work speaking from my heart and mind. May we all rejoice in being able to create.❤❤❤ Joy, love and light to all.

I've been feeling the same way. We moved 2 years ago and I've done practically NO art process. Similar to you, life, overwhelm, sickness, etc. My heart wants to be doing it but my head says it has nothing to give. And there always seems to be more 'important' tasks to do than 'make a mess'. Like Wendy says, we need to get out of our left brain and let the right brain take over. It's there, lying dormant. It just needs a nudge. I hope you take those steps to shine, lovely. :)

It is always a breath of fresh air to watch your videos!!! With the insanity we have here in the States, watching your joy, kindness, and creativity is so good for the soul. I love your paintings and I think your faces are wonderful!!! There's such a uniqueness about them, a signature style, that is so refreshing to see in a world where people are trying to copy others. I totally understand the struggle of finishing a painting. I think we often get in our own way by thinking thoughts that have no business coming into the final stage like "will it sell", "will others like it", "what if it is not perfect", "this isn't anything like what I planned it to look like", etc. We can't force creativity into a mold to look a certain way, to make everyone happy, nor to be perfect...there is no perfection in art, you can't please everyone, and often you need to release those initial structured ideas of what you 'thought' it would be and work with Spirit in what it evolved to be and needed to be. If we release all those pressures, finishing comes much easier and much more statisfying...like you said, listening to that left brain can create problems!! Stay in the story and you will stay in the flow! Good advice I recently received is that when you are starting a painting, write out in your sketchbook what the story is about your painting, what do you most want to get across. Make thumbnail sketches, jot down color ideas, feelings, etc. Then when you get to the end or get stuck, refer back to your notes to recall how you were feeling when you started and what the story is, it will get you back on track. Hope this helps anyone else going through these frustrating moments, it helped me a lot!!! Blessings!

Wendy, it is good to see and hear you again. I know you work in the way that you do and that you are formally schooled in visual art. I am self_ taught, resist instruction, am interestdd and do follow my own intuition, am intuitive in my practice of visual art. Usually mixed media using many different materaials, also in my writing, performance, singing follow the energy and that is hard to explain. When I draw faces it comes from inside and usually ends up an expression of my inner state. It happens over the course of a day or half day and sometimes my collage pieces are finished fairly quickly. For, say, 40 years or so I have been unraveling and uncovering what hzppened to me in the past(birth to about 28 yrs when I could escape, after my parents had dies, very extreme, bizarre, dark devastating stuff which left me with many parts inside, young, middle, older, which almost demand a, intuitive, quick, right brain approach. I tried drawing my face years ago by looking in the mirror. I got a terrible headache and it took z long time, and did not flow easily at all. My "kids" inside do not want to do any of thd visual art that way or in the morning for about a month writinv very short stories which is fun and a good workout for my brain and imzgination to see what the energy will turn up each day. I hope to collecg them into a book. I have reams of writi ng and drawings from my recovery over the years exposing the memories and story of what happened to me in the past. When I have gotten some of the material assembled it always turns into dangerous subject matter that I believe would put me at risk in my life so it's sitting here in boxes......Anyway, dear Wendy, keep on "showing up" and keepin gus company. You have been an inspiration for me ever since discovering your utube at the start of the Covid stuff. Maybe you are aware, but I ran across The Faery Whisperer with Claire Casely who is also an artist, on UTube. Blessings to you and James.

Love your wisdom about the creative process. We do indeed procrastinate a lot of the time. As a stitcher, the hardest part for me is cutting into a fresh length of cloth. Thank you for this video and the messages. Everything you said was so very true. Showing up is indeed part of the deal and one develops a rhythm for creating. I am still recovering from a bimalleolar ankle fracture. It has done a negative number on me mentally as well as physically. I'm not sure it's the left brain, the limitations on my mobility or just the darkness that overtakes me but I am procrastinating now more than any other time in my life. Creating, painting, mask making, collage, mosaics are all I have, everything else is a responsibility, a chore, a something that conforms. I have 3 paintings waiting to be finished, journals I began, or tried to (fear of the blank page/fear of it turning out wrong), and more waiting on me. In my minds eye I see they huddled together wondering where the heck is she. I know I'm using my injury as an excuse so your message here is so spot on. If I can get up and make it to the couch I can make it to my studio. You are indeed the brightest fairy in the forest, thank God for that.

For my undergraduate dissertation, I interviewed two men I consider to be keen exercisers. I don’t naturally gravitate towards cardio type activities myself. I wanted to understand what made them show up, to go running in the rain or go out to classes and clubs after work on a dark winter's evening. I was surprised to find that even they dont always feel like it. But they do it anyway, because they know that once they start they will usually want to carry on. And even when they don't, there are so many other benefits that they do it anyhow. Lately, I've done very little journalling, instead prioritising other "important" tasks. This video has come at a good time for me to reflect on my choices. I'll give my down time a bit more thoight this week. Thank you Wendy!

Im going to recommend this video to my son and his wife, they both make a living as artists and live and work on a narrowboat . Anthony very often gets artist block and struggles to work . On utube they are called art in the corridor and showcase their art and music . Thanks for the inspiration 😊

Well you certainly are feisty in this video, Wendy. I'd like to respond by saying that being whole is better than projections of splitting my thinking into right and left, which results in inner conflict on a stage of self-judgement and drowning myself into a vat of "I should"s. Self-acceptance has no fear. It is being whole. It is the inner voice that says, "All is well with me." Self-acceptance is fearlessness. Absence of fear is the space I love to inhabit. Who I am is not what I do. Who I am is being here, now. Creativity is something I do to solve problems in the transactional world, though it can help with my inner world as well. It;s not one over the other. Sometimes inner speech speaks louder than words ever can, if I can hear it. If I can listen. But do I want to? Congratulations on finishing your paintings! ❤

Oh Wendy, I only found you a week or two ago, I’m slowly catching up with your videos. But this one in particular has really touched me. I am a procrastinator, mainly because I constantly think of what others think of me and what I do. I’ve done art therapy sessions in the past and gain so much from them, but stopped when a family member made a scathing remark about a painting I had done. I am slowly learning that my creative hobbies bring peace and joy for myself not others. From your videos I have started art journaling and I loose myself for a couple of hours from worries. You have helped me in this short time of following you and I truly thankyou. Xxx

I'm a scrapbooker. It's taken me 15 years to create my wedding albums. I am almost finished but life just got in the way and I still have the ceremony to do. My husband passed away a few weeks ago and I feel that it's time to finish our story. It's sad but it will be healing for me.

Brilliantly done Wendy! You’ve said more about the struggle, procrastination, self doubt and baring your soul to the world, in showing it your creativity, than one could read in a hundred books. No amount of technology will ever replace actual, physical art in whatever form it takes! Thankyou so much for sharing, I really enjoyed it immensely. Encore! Take care xx

I totally get this ,as in finishing a painting and starting a painting it happens to me from time to time as well ., and then yes putting it out there for someone to see and then letting it go if someone wants it as well . is all Part of the journey though . I used to feel guilty to actually want to be creative as there is always yes so many things to be done in our everyday lives is so easy to put it off. Allowing myself to be creative is self care for me and has been a healing journey for me . Thanks dear so much for sharing your thoughts .I received my Fairy poem and little Fairy card and I so love them so much and treasure them you write so beautiful as you paint . sending love 💖

Hi Wendy absolutely loved what you said, it really resonated with me the creative bit and so so true! It was extra hard for me because I was born into a businessy family and they just didnt get me! Now I am on the right path and in fact I put two of my paintings into a local exhibition even though I knew they would be judged. But nothing bad happened and I felt like I had passed that hurdle that was in the way and moved onto knowing that my art work is actually unique and different. Didnt win anything but I didnt care I made that move and it has helped me tremendously. Thank you for sharing.

I'm so grateful that I stumbled across your channel! I'm in a corporate stressful job and fearful of quitting due to financial commitments but have a heart, soul and mind full of creations; art and writing waiting to burst out! I have been procrastinating on making a budget, building my studio (sitting covered in tarps to build) in fear of it all failing. Your video has given me the oomph I need, to just show up and get started on building the blocks to break free! Thank you for creating such soul connecting content and look forward to being with you on your journey ❣

“These paintings are like old friends, keeping me company!” Yes. When I made my major move last fall to city where I don’t know anyone - leaving comfort and people friends - my photographs were the most important ‘things’ I wanted with me. I’m a fine art photographer & my photos are the friends I could bring with me on this journey. I know them & they bring me comfort. (You & your videos are more friends that I get to bring along! Thank you, Wendy!)

Yeah You finished a couple different pieces of your artwork! Hooray and CONGRATULATIONS! Wonderful work. Thankyou so much for witnessing both the finishing and the getting started; the hardest parts. Working on a great big painting for several weeks. The flow is so good when I'm working and then tied up in knots with self doubts when I'm not. Thank you for nurturing artists, creatives and our bigger better selves. Good to see you back on track!
