Most radiators are up against the wall , therefore it would be difficult to clean and floss that way . I wish he would have shown with the radiator still against the wall. I used a similar method just adding an air compressor to get rid of dust build up in those tiny spaces.. thks for sharing tho

No need for high heat paint. A cast iron radiator will max out at 180F with water and 220F with steam. Standard spray paint is heat tolerant to 250F. I painted my steam radiators with Rustoleum and haven't had any issues for 15+ years. They may smell at first after initially heating the first few times, but that quickly goes away. You can also sandblast your radiators to easily remove the rust and old paint. As long as you have a compressor there are many DIY videos on how to easily sandblast.

The cans of Rustoleum say max to 220 so I'm hesitant to use it with 220 being the max. Also the heat paint is not that much more money at $7-$8 a can. This is a job you don't want to have to repeat any time soon. Again, moving them to sand blast or pressure wash is difficult as heavy as these things are.

Agreed. It's not necessary to use high-heat paint. Also, TSP would be much better for cleaning than Simple Green.

I don't know....since you have it off and out the house why not at least blast it with a pressure washer-let it dry and then hit it with an air compressor.Thats assuming if you have one you have a bunch and it would worth while renting or buying one or the other. One vid in and I think I came up with a better solution.

Have you ever tried to move these things? They are extremely heavy and this one is huge so taking it outside to pressure wash would be very difficult. I'm renovating a 2 family house right now in Boston and their are probably 10 Radiators upstairs and downstairs that I'm cleaning and painting and I would not be able to take them outside easily.

@@lanejohnson8552 I completely under stand what you are saying as i have done it the way i described.Moving them sucks but other than that it is a fraction of the shitty prep work.If you look at the end close you can still see a large amount of shit at the bottom of the inside and it looks like shit.I hate spending time doing something that looks like shit.I would at least hit it with and air compressor .Also,i would be open to different ways if it was not my own home as in like a flip.Hope things went well.

I know this is old af but, I believe it's off so they can do it in their studio or whatever you want to call the area they shot this video. It's to illustrate what it would be like to paint it where it is in your house...
