In this demo I will be covering...
1) Choice of Subject. What makes a good watercolour subject. How to simplify the scene. Things to change or leave out.
2) Materials I use such as the paper. I will also cover the paints I use and the palette, plus how I hold the different brushes for different techniques.
3) Doing the outline sketch as the first step. How to the basic shapes of the key elements of the picture.
4) Doing the sky and the first wash of the background and then the foreground.
5) Shadows and details of the straw bails and a figure.
6) Watch out for the 'sword' brush and highlighting tips.

Summer, lovley summer! I long for it! I will try to copy this, you have catched that happy feeling of moving and breathing, smelling - living and walking on a rural sommer road. Such a nice reminder as I watch your tutorial, now in November, actually my 65 years birthday. - those years have reallly flown! Thank you! I will try to copy that feeling of summer that you created in this tutorial. Though - being a Novemberchild, I just love this dark, cosy time of the year. Short days, long evenings, plenty of opportunity to concentrate on learning to paint watercolor! 👍👏❤️

This painting really started coming together when you started painting the shadows of the hay bales. Then came the horizontal drop shadows on the road. Wonderful! What often bothers me is the straightness of many country paths when I see them in my reference photos. It is nice to see what difference it makes to put a slight curve in the road!

I've just now realized how different Saunders- Waterford is to Arches, as I attempted to copy your painting. In the past I've only had limited success with capturing the light in your paintings, but it's a quantum step easier with S/W. Not sure why yet, but I suspect that it has something to do with difference in sizing...just a theory at the moment. Anyway i'd like to thank you for quiet inspiration.:)
@pandoraefretum
@pandoraefretum 3 жыл бұрын
I would also like to know the difference between Arches and Saunders.... I see Arches has a more irregular tooth, and that's all I have ever used (apart from some Fabriano) .... maybe I should buy some Saunders and try for myself.

Love your tutorials... I love the fact that you take the time to comment the entire painting, from the reference image, to the sketch, to the first wash, to the details, without speeding up the video and taking the time to explain your thought process. This is something that is very useful for a beginner like me - almost like having a private lesson with a tutor. Thank you! One question: the first wash is very loose in the way it is applied and is used to establish a base color for each parts of the painting, therefore it seems that you use much more water, letting the strokes overlap and the pigment mix. How do you avoid this in the second layer? Do you use much less water?
@TimWilmot
@TimWilmot 6 жыл бұрын
On the second layer, first ensure that painting is 100% dry. Second layer could be darker and thicker

As someone who grew up drawing technical drawings such as house plans and the like, my mind finds it so difficult to comprehend how you can create such abstract and imprecise forms and end up with a wonderful painting. I have had to put it on hold but I was studying Architecture and my tutors were huge fans of abstract form/art and I found those subjects particularly difficult to free my mind in such a way. I think water colour painting could really help with this.

I think it is pro arte or jacksons. Some call it a sword brush

Hi Tim, are you using Jacksons own brand watercolours for this demo? I think you used them a while back. I was just concerned with how frothy they seem to be when you were mixing. I had this problem with some W&N tubes a while back and couldn't get on with them. Great demo by the way.

I did use Jacksons. I now use W and N. You get what you pay for I guess. Thanks John

That appears to be an Escoda Último #18 mop instead of the Raphaël Soft Aqua #6 quill you've used in your videos lately. My Último have fuzzy points that I don't like, although that may or may not be normal. Is yours like that too? Which do you prefer? I personally prefer the Raphaël because it feels more like natural hair, but they're both good brushes. Thank you for the painting. I've gained a fair bit of guidance out of these and always look forward to seeing the next one.

Yes my Escoda went like that. The Raphael in my opinion has softer hair and the brush is lighter in weight and better balanced
