Thank you SO MUCH for making a cabbage palm/ sable palmetto. Been a house painter for 23 years. As current, learning to paint murals with compiled instruction. I am from Florida and the leaves are different for my favorite palm; also our state tree. So many painters of the feather palms, so few of the fan. Not to pick, but must say, many of the painting of feather type palms look like they were painted by people who had never seen so much as a picture of their subject. I am poised to paint a trompe l'oeil mural in our dining room featuring a sable palm.

This is a really great step by step tutorial and anyone especially if you are from Florida and want to learn how to paint Palms, this is for you! Would love to see how it's done with oil painting, to see how the process differs. I was under the impression that The Highwaymen painters painted in oil.. how were they able to layer so much paint so quickly using oil? Cheers!
@GebahiArtworks
@GebahiArtworks 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon,, I can perhaps do one eventually! Yes the highwaymen did theirs in oils but used a palette knife to do the palm trees,?thats how they were able to cake on that much paint! It’s a bit harder on a smaller panel though. But I can try for a demo!

Enjoyed this - very helpful.... curious as to so why would you not do sky first.... then do palms?
@GebahiArtworks
@GebahiArtworks 4 жыл бұрын
Good question, you can, but in this instance, if I did the sky first and messed up the tree I would have to color match the sky to fix the tree. Sometimes I start with the sky first if I’m not going to put details on the tree! I hope this makes sense. Here I’m able to sculpt the tree with the sky colors and shape the tree a little bit more to my liking! The opposite would have been harder ! I probably should explain that in another video, you bring up a good question!

I really liked the way you did the detailing I usually take off white to yellow shade pastel paper for giving the background And use pastel pencils for detailing but surely the way you did was awesome Because when I do it with pastels I can't detail properly until everything is given its second layer of pastels It was brilliant dude

Actually I have once with acrylics but it wasn’t my style! It’s nice and you can make it look like oils if you use a thick amount of paint and you see the brush marks! It all depends on your style.

I'm curious about the palm tree. The first two can have the edges edited with sky color. The palm tree is more complicated in that there would be several openings to cut. Would you recommend painting this tree on top of a solid sky area instead. Instinctively that's what I might do. As a matter of fact, with HB I tend to place darks over lights as I would in watercolor. I'm going to attempt these samples. I have to say the canvas enhances the edge texture nicely vs panel.
@GebahiArtworks
@GebahiArtworks 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can paint the trees over a solid background, I’ve done so in the past when I wanted to add more trees, but you have to be careful when using acrylics, especially if you make a mistake and have to match colors to rectify the error!

@GebahiArtworks
@GebahiArtworks 4 жыл бұрын
Well I just started using them and so far I’m happy the they applied to canvas, but now I have to try them on wood panel! They are very well pigmented fir sure and a little went a long way. I still have to play with them a little more. I was just to see flow acrylics would work with my style of painting, so far not bad but still want to experiment!
@jackiegarroutte8970

One more question please: are artist quality acrylics including golden HB more easily blendable than say student quality paints? They are more pigmented right? Can you sort of show the mixing and laying down of a few brands you use? I have never tried Matisse or Golden. I have Arteza and Salvador ...I like both...and liquitex and some others from hobby lobby. Do Golden and Matisse have a more matte appearance? Some acrylics have a plasticky look Thanks. :)
@GebahiArtworks
@GebahiArtworks 4 жыл бұрын
That would be a video to do! I definitely love Golden heavy body and Matisse, they dry satin from what I see. They do blend very well and sometimes I mix Matisse with my Golden paints without a problem.
@GebahiArtworks
@GebahiArtworks 4 жыл бұрын
My top 3 brands are Golden HB, Matisse Structure, and Winsor&Newton artist acrylics! All highly pigmented. I don’t know where you live but one of these three brands must be available.

Hi, I am a scientist ( cancer research) from the university of Chicago. I retired last year. Painting is my hobby, but because of my research, I could never had enough time to focus on it. I never had any training before. Since I am retired, I am interested in learning now. Do you have any suggestions for that? I liked your teaching style. That was such a nice lesson! I really loved it! Can you do one demo about how to paint different types of trees? Which one do you prefer Acrylics or oil? I just stared using oil. Thank you very much.
@GebahiArtworks

Good evening Rajani, thank you for what you do and did!! Since I paint in a impressionistic style, I paint loose. In order to paint loose you need to concentrate on what’s important in painting and leave out the rest! To start painting loose use a small canvas such as 6”x8” or 8”x10” and use a large brush, that will force you paint things in masses and not in details! And it’s the same wether in acrylics or oils! I’ll put trees on my list of subjects to teach! Thank you for watching!!
@rajanikanteti1484
@rajanikanteti1484 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice! That was a great help. I will definitely follow your instructions. For oil painting which brushes do you suggest? Can we use same brushes for oil and Acrylic? Also what type of canvas board is good? There are so many varieties, which makes difficult to select. I am planning to order all the material from Jerry’s Artarama, once I know the details from you. Thank you once again for the help.
@GebahiArtworks
@GebahiArtworks 3 жыл бұрын
@@rajanikanteti1484 hi Rajani! For oils I would pick Princeton Catalyst series brushes, they hold paint well and have a nice feel. For canvas, since your ordering from Jerry’s, I would “Edge Canvas (11/16 depth), they are my preference and affordable!! I just made an order of these canvas myself. Some acrylic brushes can be used for oils, just make sure they are not too soft. I’ve used ProStroke synthetics brushes from Jerry’s and worked fine!
@rajanikanteti1484
@rajanikanteti1484 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help. I will order the brushes and canvas from Jerry’s Artarama as per your advice. I also want to know about birch wood boards, which you have used in some of your paintings. What’s the advantage of those in comparison to canvas? Is smooth surface is better for painting? Can I use your paintings as a reference for my practice? I am not aware of the rules and regulations regarding this. I hope there is no misunderstanding. You are a great artist and I am lucky to get the guidance from you. Thank you once again. Kind Regards, Rajani
@GebahiArtworks
@GebahiArtworks 3 жыл бұрын
@@rajanikanteti1484 the birch wood is nice because it’s smooth and can get more details depending on your style of painting! But there is work involved in preparing the wood, like gesso and sanding which are a little time consuming! Otherwise nice to paint on. But now I’m back to canvas because I’m tired of the preparation work. You use my paintings as references but can sign the painting as your own! You must write original copy, and give credit to the original artist!
