When painting Galvanised steel you have to be aware that some primers and metal paints are not suitable. You can use a dedicated Galvanised metal paint or you can use a suitable primer. In this video Zinsser 123+ has been used as a primer followed by one coat of Rustoleum Primer flowed by a top coat of Rustoleum painters touch. Brought to you by www.ultimatehan...

The galvanization process covers the surface of the metal with an oil and zinc coating. The first step in painting galvanized metal is to remove this surface coating using an acidic wash of either 100% vinegar or a solution of water and muriatic acid. Once the zinc and oils have been removed, the acidic wash needs to be neutralized using either ammonia or a baking soda and water mixture. This neutralization wash is then rinsed and the metal allowed to dry. Only then can the galvanized metal be primed and painted. Further, there is no need to use two forms of primer before paint. Once the zinc and oil surface coating has been removed (and acid neutralized), galvanized metal should be painted using techniques similar to that of painting aluminum. However, under absolutely no circumstance should galvanized metal ever be primed or painted with an oil-based product (only water-based coatings should be used.)

I was reading , from Sherwin Williams: Most hydrocarbon solvents, including mineral spirits, leave a thin layer of residue that leads to adhesion failure of the paint film. Instead, use a water-based cleaner/degreaser to clean a galvanized surface. Most acrylic coatings will adhere directly to cleaned galvanized metal.

@@nunyabiznes33 No, methylated spirits is basically alcohol. It will not leave a residue behind and will evaporate if left on the surface. It will not wear off the zinc coating 👍

The best cleaner for galvanized metal is simply tsp. You must use a 100% acrylic primer. Alkyd and galvanized metals don’t go together. It’s sticks great for a few years then saponification starts and it will repeal the coating. It will peel. That’s all you need to know.

The TDS for Bulls Eye 123 _Plus_ from Rust-oleum specifically says it is for NON-galvanized metals. Yes, it will adhere, but then eventually saponification will set in and the paint will peel away. Bulls Eye 123 (not the Plus version) is for galvanized metals, as listed in it's TDS. Further, the TDS recommends ammoniated cleaners prior to priming, not TSP (it specifically says not to use TSP based cleaners).

Eche it with white vinegar or clean it with white vinegar. Will allow paint to stick for an durable finish. Top coat with oil base paint. Cheap an easy solution. Try it on anything galvanized. Also a deglosser would work. Or liquid sandpaper if you have to use latex.

Another good tip is to always clean out the nozzles by turning the can upside down and remove the nozzle when you bin it. Then when you get a new tin of paint use the old nozzle again and keep the brand new one as a spare ;-) I have about 20 brand new nozzles somewhere LOL

***** That's another great idea. The only problem is that not all of my nozzles are the same, some are longer or shorter, have a hole for a little tube or not, have the input tube inserted in the bottom or contain their own input tube that sticks down into the can of whatever. Still, I'm gonna remember that. I have this extremely sticky stuff in a can that I spray on branches that have just been pruned to prevent rot and infection. Every time I use it that is it, there is no way to find another nozzle and I think the air clean out idea would work well for that, in fact right after use would be best. Thanks UH!

I made a front splash panel for a vintage truck I am restoring out of new galvanized steel. The truck will not be driven in severe weather but it is up front, parallel to the ground and between the grill and the front bumper. my plan is to ultimately paint it with Rustoleum High Performance Enamel. One of the best rattle can paints out there in my opinion. I did not see anything regarding sanding it first to prep it and make adhesion better. I thought maybe using a DA with say 100 grit first might be a good idea. Then the Zinsser, then the paint. Sound logical?

I don't think so, unless the paint has metallic property that distort the magnetic lines of force, which I doubt. The magnetic permeability of paint is negligible, and even if it wasn't it's pretty thin. Magnetic force is determined by distance from a magnet, not whether it is painted or not.
