Really appreciate your thoughtful and deliberate approach. I've just picked up art again, having been on hiatus for about 30 years from it and am really enjoying sitting with my wife and reconnecting with the simple pleasures of art, chat and the occasional cuppa. Really love your approach to doing clouds and the sparkle on water, but mostly I'm picking up the technique of overall planning and your color mixing. Haven't done watercolor since high school in Perth - funny how 46 years later, here in the rainforest of the Pacific Northwest, I've gone back to it.😅

Fantastic job Joe, thank you so much for sharing. Leaving an incorrect line then re-drawing the correct line will be a tremendous help, have always struggled getting things right because I didn't have a reference to were/how I went wrong but leaving the line is a fantastic tip.😀

To the untrained eye, there is not a lot of color variation in the reference. But with subtle color and value variations, you have created a lot of depth. The detail in the boats is perfect!

I just did an ocean scene with the water in the mid ground and extended into the far distance. I have the foreground almost finished, but after letting it sit for 2 days I have now decided that the water has dried to a much too pale tone. My in-house art critic advised me to leave it alone because the rest of it is very good and he feels the pale tone adds to the depth. I don’t think the color of the water is coordinated with the sky. However, I also feared glazing it and creating an unwanted hard edge. I am so glad to see you doing exactly what I think should be done with my painting. You have encouraged me to give it a go! After all, as I tell myself with each painting, this is a learning experience, not a priceless masterpiece😂 Thank you for this video. Also, thank you for the book.

@@JoeCartwrightI did try this as you demonstrated by wetting the back first and then doing my color/tone adjustment to the water and it worked wonderfully well! Thanks again.

Absolutely stunning. One of the top tutorials I have ever seen for glistening water. And the clouds! Just superb. You made it look easy in the sense of just remembering to take your time and be patient with the process. Thank you! (Picking up on the Perspex mat, how does the thickness come into play? Is 6mm the thinness to go for?)
@JoeCartwright

When I am painting outdoors I find 6mm stiff enough that it does not flex, while 3mm flexes too much.

Thanks a lot for this very useful demonstration. One question: how damp is the paper when you were painting the sea?
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 4 ай бұрын
The surface of the paper has to be totally dry, otherwise no dry brush strokes for the glitter is possible.

It is 6mm thick perspex (acrylic) and I use the matt side. Not expensive and I bought it off someone on ebay.
