That is the best representation of contrast usage I've seen in ages! I spend hours getting my ork skin to this standard with traditional paints and this way takes a fraction of the time!

Off the top of my head I don't remember - it could well be down to the zenithal prime - my advice is apply it as normal and while its wet you can use a clean brush to clear it up and help create a blend

Ah man this is perfect! I haven't painted an ork in 20+ years (2nd edition box set!), and I've got the new Killteam box on the way. So I've got a few ork boyz I'll have to paint and I'm really looking forward to it. This is the technique I'll use. Much appreciated. Simple, effective, and looks damn good. You're the best bro.

Wow. I'm only just getting back into 40k after a 30 Yr break, and the techniques have changed so much! I loved playing orks in the old days, but I never really mastered the skin tones, and I tend to go heavy on the infantry with orks (makes the fights messy and orky, as they should be) and I was getting put off by how time consuming I thought it would be. This is the first time I've seen contrast paint used so effectively and simply, though. You've converted me before I'd even picked up a paintbrush. Sub earned as well 👍

Nice job. I used a mix of Plaguebearers Flesh/Ork Flesh in 2:1 ratio (plus the usual dot of Medium) for my Savage Orruks warband, with very similar results.

I also stumbled on your Ghaz and I'll be using that. Similar style of painting to me which helps - slap it on when you can, be careful when you need to. Rather than some other tutorials I've seen. Props!

So I've been looking around for a good template to use for my Orks. There are a lot of tutorials out there, and while nearly all of them result in a very good end product, most of them are too complex, take too long, or both. This is just what I was looking for. In addition, the paint list at the start of the video was just bonus. Thank you!

@@dumbdickler670 Pretty good! We're now about, oh, 60 orks in now? The skin in particular comes out really well, and I've received some positive comments. And yes the contrast makes things easier but it doesn't mean you can just slap it on, it's still very important to make sure that the paint isn't pooling in places where you don't want it to (one or two of my boys has a darker green spot on the top of their head because of this). Overall though, it's a really good paint scheme that is a solid compromise for anyone who wants their Orks to look good WITHOUT spending hours on each individual boy.

From what I can tell, the specific green he used in this video isn't available so I'll be trying some different greens, but I was also planning on using wraith bone as a base rather than the mix he suggests. Skin turned out amazing!!! Never would have thought to use plaguebearer as an undercoat...I was curious of using yellow as an undercolour and then Ork flesh contrast...but this is perfect

I've had a fear of buying and painting works for this reason alone. I've seen many terrible paint jobs by novice or armatures when it comes to Orks. But that was back in the 90s or very early 2000s. This video really made painting with works look simple and good. now i'm been thinking of getting back into this hobby, Orks are back on the table for consideration for an army.

Although I have watched your Eavy Metal Ork skin tutorial too, I am not sure what paint to use just for little bit of top highlighting over the contrast method presented in this video. This was my go-to paintjob for ork skin, but unfortunately, Ork Skin from Vallejo Xpress made it practically obsolete, as it gives an almost identical finish.

I painted a Blood Bowl Orc team years ago (early 1990s) using similar techniques and extremely simple paints. Bleached Bone basecoat on all... white I found was too bright, and I never basecoat with black. Skin tones I used were: - Smaller Orcs on the team like the throwers and liners: Base Scorpion Green... wash with Goblin... highlight with Scorpion. - Medium Orcs like the blitzers: Base Goblin Green... wash with Goblin/Dark Angels (3 parts Goblin, 1 part Dark Angels)... highlight with Goblin. - Large Orcs like the blockers: Base Dark Angels... highlight with Goblin. No Wash. The Goblin Green gives a real matte-finish to the skin and adds shading at the same time. When combined with matching armour, it gave a real dynamic look to them.

Thanks Sirian - if you have an airbrush you can use that otherwise many thin layers. I'd recommend normal paints for a vehicle 👍🏻

Looking forward to the new Kill Team, so this will be helpful. I still have the original Ork Kill Team too. If I primed them in Mechanicus Standard Grey, can I put Grey Seer over it? Thanks!

Yes you can do - just make sure you spray it in thin coats 👍🏻

Hey man! Love you video and used it on my own models and it turned out great. I do have one question though, how do you correct tiny mistakes that landed on the skin? Do you have a specific layer colour to use over it? Because the plaguebuerer doesn't really cover without an undercoat

Glad you like it - you can try something like ogryn camo as a highlight - otherwise you may have to repaint that section. If you find it happens a lot - try doing all the model first and then the skin last

Do you water down the Biel tan green? Or apply it straight from the pot? As I’ve just tried using it straight from the pot and the model looks very dark now

Straight from the pot, but make sure you have very little on your brush

I have both of these colors and mine come out really blotchy and so much less smooth I primed with white instead of grey cause they didn’t have it at the store? Is it just my primer ? Or are both coats supposed to be really thin?

They should be thin - although I used both straight out of the pot - make sure the plaguebearer is really well mixed too!

Thanks for leaving a comment - depending on the tone you want to go for you could use bone colours or light green like nurgling green - if you want something more involved, check my channel as I have another Ork skin tutorial using the same recipe as the 'Eavy Metal team

Glad you enjoyed it! You can either paint the panel with grey seer and add the red back over it, or you could paint a little silver inside the black and call it battle damage!

If you were to do death skullz (blue), which colours would you recommend? I've heard...mixed...things about the contrast and I'm not sure what blues to purchase to get that "lucky git" look

Thanks for the comment! I think contrast are great for organics, cloth etc The lightest blue is talassar blue - and i think that would be the one for death skullz - it's kindof a caledor sky colour in terms of its normal paint equivalent I have a pot but haven't used it much - it should be fone though much like the blood angels red contrast in this video

Thanks for the comment - it depends on if you want a darker blue (leviadon/ultramarine) or something a little brighter like Talassar blue - I'd personally go with Talassar

When you say you put Corax white over the top do you mean that you sprayed it down from directly above the miniature or that you did a dry brush of all the uppermost facing raised edges with it? Just curious, thanks and 👍.

Nope - straight out of the pot - the key with the biel tan green is to keep it moving so it doesn't settle

Do you thin your contrast paint. I have tried following your video and bought all the paints, but yours seem more... fluid-ly (lack of better term) than mine. Ofc I have only painted for roughly a month, but I sort of some places where specially the Snakebite Leather is darker than other places etc. I don't know If I use too little Contrast paint or what's wrong.

Thanks for the comment - no i don't thin mine - i use them straight from the pot- i do put them on a palette first to make sure that I don't have too much on my brush I also make sure to give it a really good shake before use

Nice video , definitely want to give this a try. Question: I do have Corax white spray but I don’t have grey seer. Would this work if I just went in straight away with Citadel spray so expensive. I do have a medium dark grey spray by krylon if that would make a difference. Thanks for the help !

Thanks for the comment Barry - yeah just use Corax white - stay away from darker colours when using contrast unless you want a really dark effect!
