As a professional decorative artist that has stenciled many floors as well as other surfaces, I have a few suggestions to help you (or others who may read this)...-the use of two identical stencils allow you to keep painting while one stencil is drying; -the use of a light coat of SprayMount adhesive on the back of your stencil will keep it in place while applying paint and also prevent bleeding underneath; -using stencil brushes (which have flat bristles) rather than foam brushes would make the process much easier (stencil brushes come in many sizes to help fit the specific portions of the stencil design); -the use of paper towels to “off-load” the brush from excess paint each time you apply it to the stencil will really help with keeping crisp lines and therefore eliminate touch up in the end. 100% agree with all of this! I did a wall but now doing a floor. I felt that the spray adhesive didnt work very well in wall but I am going to try it again on floor.

Exactly, just the thought of tearing up good tile and replacing it, while it would be nice once complete, it is a big job. A lot easier to work with what we have and have it be lovely for a fraction of the cost and effort.

This is beautiful! I did a similar project in my entry on a concrete floor. I used stencil adhesive to hold the stencil down, it comes in an aerosol can. It took me a few months to complete but I get compliments on it regularly.

I love the fact that Julie gets down and does all her work minus the electricity wiring that she left to the professionals. Your floors look amazing! The stencil website inspired me to do a two tone color of white & light gray. After priming and painting the base coat all I have to do is use two different widths of painter tape, and tape out the entire floor to make a tartan pattern. Paint it with the other color (a few coats) and boom! Tartan floor! Thank you Julie!! This was a really helpful video. Also, I can show him your video to waylay any doubts :)

a suggestion would be to use spray adhesive on the back of the stencil to keep the whole stencil attached to the painting surface ❤️

I am buying a new build. I close on Jan. 13. I gave away all of my old furniture. I love that I'm not pouring old wine into new skins but I am terrified. To the point of getting physically ill when I really start thinking about it. I'm nearly paralyzed with fear. I can't see or appreciate the beauty of the home because I'm so afraid decorating. I know the big things that I want but I am lost on accessories, window treatments and wall hangings. All I know is that I want artsy, unique and some OOAK items. I'm single, so the success or failure is all mine. I have been watching your videos and they have helped me with those bigger purchases. I avoided a disaster watching your channel. @@JulieKhuu I love the look and I think its awesome to change the look by stenciling the tile instead of ripping it out. I completely agree on the top coat and maybe if it does start to wear you could just recoat it with more policrylic.

Yes this can work on a fireplace as well Laura! Just research the top coat and make sure it can stand up to heat 👍🏻

You can you super 77 or an adhesive spray. Spray back of stencil lightly and it will lay flat.. just reapply as needed. If you just spray on the stencil it will lift up easily.

Your bathroom is incredible. You did such a good job and I hope you didn't have too many painful joints after accomplishing that. Julie, had you considered doing one color at a time and taping off the other areas? Do you think that would have been even more time consuming? Regardless it is so beautiful.

That would have tripled my efforts doing one color at a time Velvet 😅 You saw how I had to blow dry each stencil after use. Imagine repeating that step 3 times per tile 🤪

I think a single color would be your best bet Enji. The stencil really needs a smooth surface and even then it’s tricky!

Enji and Julie:Have you both considered etching out the old grout and replacing it with new. for you painted solid colors....possibly in a dramatic color?In real life the tile color is a different shade and texture than the grout. The mosaic distract from the odd sames of the base color and the tile surface, but you'd need the contract when the tile is sold. Bebe

Julie, would this work with a very textured floor tile?

From experience, I would say no Rhelda. As you can see from the stencil, it was difficult to lay it flat even on a flat tile surface. Textured flooring would pull up the stencil and cause paint to bleed underneath. Unless that’s the look you’re going for of course

Please what type of paint did you use? Especially to prime the tiles. Was it oil based paint?

Water based latex paint (linked in description box). You can use oil based paint but the fumes are strong and it takes days to dry between coats.

Hi Julie, good tips on how to use this, but I’m curious about your stencil, seeming like it pops up and doesn’t make contact all the way with the floor. I know there are different quality stencils, and some are quite heavy duty. I can’t tell you what the grades are, but I know there are probably five. Do you know how many millimeters thick your stencil was?

My tiled floors are fine, they are just ugly. It’s the color of the tile. Now I can’t wait to just paint the floors!! I probably won’t stencil. My floor is pretty big. I’m not young enough to be able to finish the job. Crap, now I’m going to look on Etsy, I’ll probably find something nice. I’m only doing two colors though!! Thank you for this video!
