Many people are thinking about planting avocado trees. While the process is simple it's a bit more complicated than putting a seed in the ground. Learn the steps we take to grow our trees so you can start growing your own crop of avocados.

Wow, I said to my wife: "Check out how fast he's taking the avocado tree from a pot into the ground and no branches are broken, no roots are damaged 😲". This technique shows how experienced you are and that you're true avocado farmer! Excellent video and great sense of humor!

Ha! Those Donies I planted had been in my nursery over two years so they're pretty tough. If I was planting a more delicate tree I would have cut open the sides of the pot and extracted it with all the dirt in tact.

@@SleepyLizard haha, this scene on the video looks so professional :-D! Especially for me - a person who lives in a California apartment and have 40 small fruit trees on balcony and in the living room. I plant "grow true" seeds(thanks for introducing that term to me) in plastic bottles from coke. It takes me half an hour to replant them into bigger containers ;-). I need to move out outside of a city and buy house with a big garden!

I learned about grafting from you...it still amazes me! I love avocados but they tend to give me wicked heartburn, so I eat mangoes almost every day (which are tied as my favorite fruit with grapefruit) to make up for it lol. @@SleepyLizard thanks for the info! Water is pretty scarce right now and we're definitely dealing with drought, it has barely rained at all in over 3 months iirc and our typical monsoon season was very minimal last year and looks to be again. Most of the avocados and mangoes I see in the supermarkets and farmer's markets here come from Mexico. We get some California avocados but I've never seen anything more local sadly, though I might not be looking in the right places. I'm about to move to an area of AZ that is much colder and actually gets a lot of snow and has a pretty active skiing/snowboarding season in the winter so I don't think I'll be growing either anytime soon lol such is life I suppose

Thanks for the vids Mr. Lizard. I have 2 Fantastics about 3', still in 1 gallon pots from the shipper. They are hardened off now. I plan on planting them in a bed up against the house for cold protection in winter. Question: Should I keep moving them up into bigger and bigger pots for a year or two before I plant into the bed or, what size should they be before I plant them in the planter? Can I plant them in the bed now at 3' tall? Thank You, keep up the good work.
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 2 жыл бұрын
You can plant them in the bed now. However if you plan to hold off a year than yes you absolutely need to go up higher in part size. Take a good look at the roots when you get them out of your pots and if they’re all twisted in tangled in on each other try to kind of straighten them out before you put them in the bed. And good luck with your trees!

@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
Hey Runboy, glad to hear your box made it and I hope you enjoy the fruit! Since we plant our rootstock from seed it's going to have variation so it's tough to say what rootstock will be cold hardy. that said, the variety you put on your rootstock has a lot to do with cold hardiness. Hass, Mexicola, Zutano, Fuerte are all grow well in California and are cold hardy.

Hello Sir, I took your advice seven months ago and the tree is doing well. It is now March 2024 and the tree has a ton of flowers. Was wondering if I should prune them again for it to focus its energy on tree growth. Your last comment said to prune the next 1or 2 seasons. I’m assuming this is its next season. I took several pictures if you’d like to take a look. Not sure the extent of pruning the flower because there’s a lot. I don’t want to kill it. I just don’t know how to attach pictures to this chat. Thanks again for all your great content!

Chandra, you can graft the 4 year old whenever you're ready. The new one you should let grow until it gets to about half the diameter of a cigarette.

I live in South Florida. I've been digging holes for planting, but its entirely rock. I managed to dig a hole about three feet wide and two feet deep through the rock using a pick axe, but then I gave up. So its basically just a big pot with rock on the bottom and all around. Will the roots be able to grow through the rock? Or will it just get pot bound?

Hello. I wanted a avacado tree so I went to the nursury and bought one. The lady said it was in the Haas family and the tag said it was a Marcus Pumpkin. I looked it up at home and these avacadoes are going to be like cantalope size. Anyway Im stuck with it now. It is in a big pot I think it is 15G. The tree is 6 feet tall. Im guessing it is time to plant it, so at that size is it going to need some shade or just go in the bare part of the yard. I live in Southwest Florida, Port Charlotte area. Also, is it safe to plant it on the side where the septic is or better to stay away from that side? Thanks, and enjoyed your video. Gonna check out your website later tonight.
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, congratulations on the new tree! You can plant it in full sunlight. I wouldn't go too close to the septic, you don't want the roots damaging the septic or clogging the drain field.

Some of the online avocado tree sources suggest getting a "Pollinator Pack" that contains: - You get 1 Hass Avocado Tree (3-4 ft.) & 1 Cold Hardy Avocado (3-4 ft.) - Pollination pack for faster fruit and increased harvest size Is there a specific reason to use a 'Cold Hardy Avocado" instead of a second Hass avocado? Does it matter as a pollinator? And any idea what's in this 'pollination pack' other than a balanced fertilizer?
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 2 жыл бұрын
Hi VARocketry, The idea behind a pollinator pack is to have multiple trees of complementary flowering types. For example a Haas is flowering type a where as a Fuerte is flowering type b. The As pollinate the Bs and the Bs pollinate the As. It has nothing to do with cold hardiness. But I am assuming since that pack contains Haas that the complementary tree would be Fuerte or Zutano which are type B. This vid explains it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qq2Eoq2KutG7fYk.html

@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 2 ай бұрын
if it has flowers or fruit on it you run the risk of them falling off...so if you want to get fruit this year it would be best to leave it in it's pot and transplant after you pick the fruit. then again if it's in a small pot you really don't want it to have fruit on it that young anyhow.
