In this video we will look at how to plant Zoysia plugs. Zoysia is a good choice of grass for warm climates and can take more shade than other warm season grasses like Bermuda. We will plant the Zoysia grass on 1 foot centers and go over watering and mowing while the plugs root in. This process will work for zenith zoysia, Meyer zoysia, emerald zoysia, empire zoysia, etc

Thanks! I have a 5K sq. ft. front lawn of Zenith Zoysia that I'm going to take a ton of plugs from to fill in my 10K sq. ft. back lawn which is about 20% cool season grass and the rest are bunching grasses and weeds. I was going to plug at 2" and water, but I guess I'll go 4 inches to expedite the growth. Glad to hear someone actually say Zoysia will overtake Bermuda. I've said it will to people, but few have agreed with me, and I don't have Bermuda to test. I do have a 600 sq. ft. test patch of Rye and Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass. I'll pop a plug in there and see which wins. I'm sure it will be the Zoysia, especially since weather is turning warmer where Zoysia will thrive and cool season grasses will conserve energy.

@@Dr.Warren We have two active dogs in our fenced in backyard so I can't till the soil and put down seed or the dogs would track in a ton of mud. So, I'll fill in a ton of plugs, water, and just let the Zoysia spread and take over the lawn. This coming spring I'll put down a pre-emergent where the Zoysia is thicker and spray some Negate herbicide to kill most cool season grasses that persist and fill in plugs anywhere that still needs some love. It's the least expensive option and least work to get the results I can think of.

@@Troy-Echo I would have to agree with your thought process. Be patient and persistent with it. It may take an entire growing season but it will work.

@@Dr.Warren Agreed. I doubt I'll be putting down any herbicides to kill the cool season grasses until next summer, and pre-emergents until the following spring once all the soil has roots to keep the soil stable and the Zoysia is spreading again. I suspect it won't be until the 2nd year that it will be fully filled in where I'm happy with it. It's going to take a ton of plugs to fill in a 10,000 sq. ft. lawn LOL.

What do you refill the holes where you took the plugs from with?

The plugs from where the zoysia went. Just flip them upside down and put them in the holes.

I plan to place 3 inch X 3 inch cuts of zoysia in a small area (for erosion control; area has very moderate slope). Rather than digging out existing soil I plan to (1) water the area well, (2) place the cuts of zoysia spaced about 6 inches apart, (3) add a premium soil between the cuts, water well, (4) apply a fertilizer and root stimulant. Will this work well?

We accidentally had a side of house tilled that was not supposed to be tilled. 😳 I saw on line where we could order Zoysia plugs. But I wonder about the vendor. We are out of Birmingham. Do you recommend a vendor for healthy plugs or would seed work? We are at a loss! Ha.. It is about 10 x 40 feet side yard.

That's a bummer. So most zoysia cultivars are sterile so no seed. Check with site one on hwy 119. They have a retail side and used to have sod when they made a small fortune on me when I had a landscape business on 280. Maybe they still have sod or plugs?

What if I have clover and crabgrass with my Bermuda? Do I need to kill any of it before I start plugging Zoysa?

It does go dormant in zone 9b and north. I am too far south to grow bluegrass and too far north to have green Bermuda or Zoysia year round. I'm in 8a.

It’s a trade off for sure. In northern Virginia, the zoysia lawns are rock stars in the summer. But yes, yellow in the winter. But year round they’re nice and dense and the self repair qualities are a huge plus.

@@krehbein Virginia is tough. I have a few friends that are golf course superintendents up that way. Too hot for blue grass but it can get cold enough to get winter kill on Bermuda or zoysia.
