I’ve played for about the same amount of time and think I know exactly what you are talking about. I could play songs that I memorized but now I can at the very least make a simple melody out of thin air. KZfaq is great for guitar players. Never been a better time to learn an instrument.

.. and to think I knew about the 12 Blues bars and I knew then main tip was: learn the blues = then play ANYTHING else with ease! Discovered it was true after 40 years! Probably the best kept secret by any school !!!

Same. Noodled from 16 to 20, not really understanding most of what I was playing. Stopped till I was 33, now I've just started again with Justin guitars and active melody. Also learning as many songs that you love is a great way, then mix those lovely chords together to make your own songs.

Hi Justin, great video. Just wondering, why do you use E7, A7, D7 as opposed to the normal form? I don't think that gets explained. Is it just because 7 chords sound better over blues?
@justinguitar
@justinguitar 3 жыл бұрын
Short answer: yes. A dominant 7th chord is formed by taking the regular chord (steaps 1-3-5 of the scale) and adding a flattened 7th step. The bread and butter of the blues is playing this kind of chords (mixed with regular majors) and improving with a minor pentatonic scale. Sounds interesting? If I were in your shoes, I'd learn songs that are slightly out of my league, thus, maintaining excitement as it would be challenging, preferably a song that even has 1 barre chord at least so that it would actually get me started on incorporating them into my playing.

First off, huge fan! Been watching on and off since the earliest days when you were just requesting donations. Even sent some in. I can play a lot of stuff if people show me, but trying to get a little more familiar with the theory behind it. I'm getting hung up on the notes when trying to play the songs. Example: Sky is Crying Key of D. Where is the "D" as my I note and therefore Where is the G, A for my IV and V? Thanks!

That's the magic of the blues! the I7 - IV7 - V7 chords consist of 4 notes each (instead of 3 notes in the regular major chords). there "7" chords are Dominant 7th Chords. they ad a flattened 7th degree of the scale. The turnaround takes place at the end of the 12-bar progressions. It can happen during the last four bars or the last 2 bars. In this lesson, the progressions are fairly straightforward and the turnarounds can be seen as 4-bars long.
