1. Going up a half step (sometimes a whole step) 2. Very close to chromatic (as many notes as possible) and avoiding flip flopping 3. Fade out (decrescendo) 4. Dao

Thank you! This is a really cool idea. I’ve been playing it less-then-cool all these years. I just shared this video link will all my sax playing buddies. I can hardly wait to discuss this with the sax players in the big band I work in. I want to hear the difference when the whole section does it this way. This is great. I love all your videos Scott. Thanks, Scott. I have been practicing falls. But this is first time I heard the wonderful tip. Start half step up. (Also, I found fringe benefit in practicing falls. They and all embellishments TEACH us chromatics and chromatic fingering.)

I have been trying to get my falls sounding great for about 2 decades but only ever really managed it in the lower notes now I know why thanks to you. I never used to go up a semitone before falling. Thanks

Hearing lots of Bird tunes like My Little Suede Shoes made me really wanna find this out. I’d try for hours but could never replicate it. When I tried, I felt that you could hear too many individual notes. This video helped me get on the right track.Thanks!

Yeah, there are a few little tweaks that can make falls sound super cool..... but it's almost like you have to know the secret password to find them out. haha.

Excellent video as usual, Scott, but how to you go so quickly and evenly between the notes? Metronome needed? Do speeding up each time you look at it? Thanks Peter

Lots and lots of practice. Practice scales really clean and even and continue to speed them up. Specific to falls, choose notes that are easy to play quickly on the sax. Also, learn and use your chromatic fingerings.

That was great. Like all of your explanatory videos I've watched so far, you really make the concept easy. Now, I have a question. What's the best way to practice to get the speed (and the smoothness) in the chromatic scale? I mean your "slow motion" is super fast and super smooth. Is it just a matter of practicing the chromatic scale up and down, faster and faster? Any tips on this would be REALLY welcome! Thanks

Basically, yes. Use a metronome find your comfortable speed... stay there for a bit and gradually bump it up. It takes a while to get it really fast and smooth.

Hey Robert! Thanks! Have you checked out my intro to improv video that uses the blues scale? Next up in the improv category is going to be soloing over chords. That might be more what you're looking for. I'm still trying to figure out how to shorten that subject into less than 15 mins. Haha.

Loved this video, so helpful. I can follow this ok starting with an A but not sure what to do if starting on a B or C (to avoid flip flopping) ?

If starting on a C - use your C to C#, If starting on a B use you side C key. Both of those will make it really smooth.

Hey Scott, your explanations are as clear and lucid as your sax sound! my question: is there a difference between a fall and a glissando? in the notation and in the playing. Ralph Tawil

Hey! A fall doesn't have an end note (it should just fade out), and a glissando goes between 2 notes (landing on the second note). A glissando generally has a squiggly line, and a fall generally has a straight line with an arch.

It's the same as the one going down... it just goes up. So a squiggly line going up.
