This is a FREE sample lesson from "The Complete DJ Course" - find out more here: djtips.co/complete-dj-sample
Club and festival DJ sets are, of course, what many of us dream of - but also the highest stakes type of DJing you can do. Depending on when you're booked (warm-up, headline, closing, and so on), you're going to want to approach these sets in a particular way, and I cover exactly how to do it in this lesson.

I call it the 12/3/6/9 dial principal when you play a big tune every 15mins,as you have 10 to build up to it,

I think this is great and for sure is the requirement today to be successful because their is more variety to play as DJ , your not limited to vinyl record box 60 tunes like how it use to be, No DJ then followed any patterns or scripts, they just played what they was feeling at the time and what the vibe or event was saying !!! more random, most dj's played latest tracks like each other , but what made each set unique was the timing of playing them and mixing , I think it's the 2nd record you play that counts , you need to make an impact !!!! drop on phrase or phatt mix into it!!!! 2nd record we use to call ( impact tune) don't have to be banger or anthem!!! just needs to stand out and be unique the way you mixed it in!!!

Now that I think of it that's almost exactly what I did at my first gig last week, by accident or instinct don't know which, and even though I couldn't actually see the dance floor for the whole two and a half hours because of lighting issues and even had a couple of audible fuck ups, people went pretty crazy and I got amazing feedback at the end. Mind you it was a peak time set which I think might be actually easier to handle in terms of energy than a warm up set, strangely enough.

Really good info here Phil, as a student on the complete dj course the jigsaw is starting to come together slowly but surely, my first step once I get fluent with manual beatmatching and the like is it start doing online video streams of doing dj sets on either Facebook live or KZfaq.

A good DJ mix to check out that “tells a story” or has a beginning, middle & end is Richie Hastings’ Decks, EFX & 909. It starts out chilled, builds up & then chills out again. It’s a good few years old but still a favourite of mine. It’s also mixed flawlessly from vinyl... seemless mixing at its finest!

About “telling a story” / beginning, middle & end. One of my favourite sets that does this is Richie Hawtins Decks, EFX & 909 mix. Starts off chill, builds up to Bangin’ then chills out again. So good!

Do you have a specific example of a mini set?
@digitaldjtips
@digitaldjtips 4 жыл бұрын
Basically three to five songs that are in the same genre / BPM range :) that could be a mini-set! You then build an entire set from a handful of mini-sets, aiming for around 60 minutes worth of music.

Play for you. Don't care about the fu*king crowd, real fans will find you. It's about the genre you play. If you play DJ unfriendly styles like EDM, Hardstyle.. it's only about the tracks you play, the crowd absolutely don't care about how you mix it. Even it's the most important thing in every electronic music genre imho, because it's played by DJ, so as a fan, I'm there for the mix, not for the pre-recorded tracks, I don't care what's playing, I wanna hear awesome mix, that's your main job as a DJ.

If you're trying to create a name for yourself as a DJ/Producer with your own sound then it's definitely important to find the right crowd rather than trying to please everyone :)

While I understand the sentiment behind this play for your scheduled slot idea I am not sure its a universal truth. There are DJs who are known for playing harder and they arent always the DJs who are booked for peak time. Its not unusual for harder playing DJs to be followed by a bigger name who doesn't play as hard. Here is an example kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l5-ZnMyel9rcmZ8.html Rebekah playing before Ellen. I dont think that Rebekah would be expected to play a set different from her usual style to fit wit Ellens who doesnt play as hard. People have expectations from certain DJs which would disappoint their fans if this was changed to "fit in" with someone playing after them.
@digitaldjtips
@digitaldjtips 4 жыл бұрын
Fair point, very few things are universal truths in the creative industries :) If you play a very specific kind of music and you know 100% you've been booked by someone who is aware of it then of course deliver what you're expected to
