Middle of the night in Bangkok. Checked my phone and saw notification for this. Brought back some nice memories. Howlin’ Wolf, one of the greatest blues singers of all time, died on January 10, 1976. On that night I was in Waterloo, Iowa working as the road manager for The Canned Heat Blues Band. We were playing a concert with Rory Gallagher at a college in the area. Canned Heat was on stage when I got the news that Howlin’ Wolf had passed. I went out on stage between songs, and told lead singer Bob “The Bear” Hite. He announced the news to the audience, and dedicated the rest of the show to Wolf. When Rory did his show, he did the same. Rory was on fire as usual, and it was a magnificent night of music. But for me, it was just beginning. Backstage after the show, Rory pulled out a beat up guitar case from which he produced an old chrome National Guitar and a bottle of Irish Whiskey. We passed the bottle around, and Rory began riffing on the guitar. For every riff he played Bob knew the vocal. For the next half hour the most soulful, heartfelt blues I’ve ever heard echoed throughout the auditorium. There was no audience other than the clean up crew, but I’d like to think that Wolf was listening in from wherever he was, because it was all for him. From then on, Rory and Canned Heat always tried to get together whenever they were in the same parts of the world. He was a very special guy.

I've been a loyal fan of Rory since 1972, when I 1st listened to Live in Europe. Then bought all Rory's albums, saw him live in Belgium in 1977. Only in 2012 did I dare learning guitar in hope to play Rory. My 1st guitar is of course a American Vintage 62 strat with Bare Knuckles Irish Tour pickups. Got my Rory Custom Shop Strat later on. Now guilty of having 8 strat, 4 telies, in spite of being an intermediate bedroom player. Went 3 times to annual Rory festival in Ballyshannon, Donegal county of Ireland: Band of Friends of Gerry Mc Avoy with Davy Knowles or Marcel Schepenzeel at guitar, pays Rory the tribute he deserves in front of European crowd joining end of May every year.

A Raw and so much Earthy Natural Guitarist, Straight out of the heart feel. Belting it out on the instrument even as he sang, Rory Gallagher is a legend, still as far as the Fender Guitar goes. He poured His Soul into it and Played with the Spirit within. The instrument has stood the Test of Time and it complemented him Absolutely. Made for each other.

David Knowles, you are a credit to Rory Gallagher. Loved listening to you play. You definitely have your own style!! Rory was the best and as a non-guitar player, it was interesting learning about the small techniques that Rory used to get his sounds. Interesting that you pointed out how Rory's playing was very Celtic. Thanks to Fender for an interesting program.

The whole Rory (l)earning his chops in show bands ie the Fontana Show Band has its analogue in Jimi Hendrix’s touring the “Chittlin’ Circuit” in the bad old segregation days before crossing The Pond to overnight fame and impact in England. Like all “overnight fame”, that is actually based on years of apprenticeship learning their trade and craft as unknowns eg Beatles in Hamburg

I saw Rory several times and he was the great guitarist of The Blues / Rock era. However there is footage of him playing more laid back on Germany TV ‘calling card’, ‘a million miles away’ and ‘I fall apart’. For pure blues, ‘what in the world’ and ‘garbage man’. He did, I think 26 tour of America and played to endless tens of thousands people, selling over 30 million records in the age before the internet.

Rory Gallagher is name that I never heard in the states until the last few years, now he seems to be everywhere. I wonder why he finally seems to be making a splash? I think guitar community have kept Rory and the likes of Gary Moore alive. When learning you're bound to come by them. Rory was successful in Europe. He always deliberately played clubs more so than stadiums and he wouldn't let the record companies release singles or music videos, so that definitely hindered his exposure in the USA.
@owenmcgee8496
@owenmcgee8496 2 ай бұрын
Dminor & triplets...hmm. I don't play. I think Rory's stuff up to '76 was often more subtle. He didn't always play the electric loud. He would do some unusual slide guitar on slow blues tunes with absolutely minimal bass & drums (one bass note; just a snare) that sound a bit like the "spooky" sound on acoustic slide that Leo Kottke or John Fahey might go for. Not sure, but I think he was doing that even before his 1st Taste record (e.g. Muddy Waters' "brand on you"); certainly up to '73 (e.g. Hoodoo Man). Instead of doing funk things he'd do very fast muted rhythmic picking a bit like Al Di Meola would do a couple years later. And then with distortion & the like: while Hendrix/Cream had those wah-wah tremolo arm solos, Rory would often use distortion to go from very quiet to insanely intense - notes will become hard to determine in the barrage of sound - in a way that, to me anyway, always sounded way more intense than any of the punk guys, Stooges or whatever through to Pixies/Cobain etc., because it sounded so natural, it being purely improvised and of the moment. An early example would be Same Old Story on Live Taste (1970). The thing is: every rock player tends to play intense. Maybe some have real aggression problems (lol). But with Rory: somehow it often seemed more "real", "direct", not just someone going nuts for effect, because it was improvised. Not the most musical of observations, or things. But anyway, Rory had "a thing". A real improviser. But not a jazz player. He didn't challenge himself that way, harmonically etc. If he didn't get unwell, I imagine he'd had developed some of the stuff he was doing up to '76 better, from Fresh Evidence (1990) to even fresher evidence. But even hearing him as a teen for the first time in the early 90s, it was evident hearing live tapes of '92-'94 gigs that he was on his last legs. You could almost hear it in his voice. The intensity in his music at that time was like someone struggling to bring out what was no longer there. I wasn't surprised to hear when he died. On acoustic, apart for DADGAD, he'd deserve a shout out for writing a few original ragtime tunes: Unmilitary Two Step, Barley & Grape Rag. He also did a cover thing, Rag Mama Rag, with bottle tops under shoes and all for a one-man-band effect live in Holland '76 that I always remember hearing because he sounded so at home in a style that nobody else was doing. I think his best effort at a "country blues" was one of his very first songs, Hail, which sounds like a "country blues" original but is also a song that paints a vivid story of a busker/street performer in any style of music or any/every street. I think it was one he should've kept performing, but he'd do covers on the acoustic instead. Blues songs with bad lyrics and then the cowboy song, Western Plain, in a Celtic tuning.

have to say... I am a big Rory fan and love Strats. I had the chance to play this CS Rory Strat in a Store. I was not impressed at all. Sounds really dull und lifeless to me. An American Pro II sounds more Rory than this. But the look is impressive. And the craftsmanship is outstanding. It is more a look thing than a sound thing. The time you play it you thing it sounds authentic cause that placebo effect. But on the recordings later in a blind test the AM Pro II sounds much better.. So I bought that and a nice amp for the same price of this Strat.

Plug that Rory custom shop strat in a Vox AC with volume at 1pm, and play Rory's songs. If you don't feel it means Rory is not your thing. Apart from the tones, the woods chosen for that Rory custom shop are really at another level than that of a US Pro kine.
