In this 'How to play in dadgad' lesson, I compare some standard guitar chords to their DADGAD equivalent. It can be handy to know how to change from standard to modal tuning. It made things a lot easier for me when I was starting out.
If you find this helpful, you may also like my 100% FREE DADGAD Guitar Cheat Sheet. It shows you the essential chord shapes and progressions you'll need to learn fast, right here: aodancoyne.com...
The four example chords I use in this video are E major, E minor, A major & A minor.
The 'dadgad E' and the 'standard E' only differ on the low D string.
The 'dadgad A' and the 'standard A' differ on the high A string and high D string.

If you have any questions at all just ask in the comments section. I reply to every message. Also if you have any songs that you'd like to learn in DADGAD let me know and I'll try get a video out to show you how to play it. I'm happy to help.

@aodancoynemusic I really love your videos and massively appreciate the work you do putting them together! They have got me back into guitar and I have been playing again with a few friends which gas been great fun. I have been playing franks reel and cooleys reel but I'd really love to learn DADGAD guitar accompaniment for 'the road to errogi'. If there is any chance of a video lesson on that tune I would massively appreciate it. Understand you probably don't take requests but I thought it was worth a shot 😁

@@aodancoynemusic My mistake! I play DADGAD but half a step down. C# G# C# F# G# C#. I thought it was called C# modal but I guess I was wrong all this time!

Thanks for this video, Aodan. Is there a process or tips on how I can transpose a song from standard (or any alternate tuning) into DADGAD? I'm having problems figuring out the correct DADGAD chords or voicings to use. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Russ

Hi Russ, one thing I would say is don't be too strict on yourself. If you transpose from standard directly, you'll end up with pretty awkward chord shapes and a sound that's quite like standard.. So to keep things easier for yourself and still have that DADGAD tone, one way of going about it would be to find the standard chords to the song you want to play, then using a DADGAD chord book. That will give you lots of options to choose from that will sound nice and you can find the chords that suit your playing style. Here's a free downloadable PDF of DADGAD chords that might come in handy. dartz.spb.ru/studio/dadgad/dadgad.pdf Then maybe use the Ultimate Guitar website to find the chords to the song you want (it can be a bit hit and miss, but the star rating usually tells you which ones are good) - www.ultimate-guitar.com/ Transposing to DADGAD should be pretty straight forward once you have those two building blocks. Finally, ideally you want to get to a place where you can figure the chords out yourself by ear. That just takes time and practice. Maybe challenge yourself with a song you know in standard and just mess around in DADGAD until you find a few shapes that you think work. Then you'll have your own personalised version of the song in DADGAD, which i think is pretty cool. Hope that helps.
