Please retract the video and edit every time you call Tool new metal please please please. I may be a little bit OCD about this but I didn’t know who I was until I was 18 and listen to Tool for the first time. Everything I have become is because of the lessons I have learned from Maynard James Keenan Adam Jones Justin chancellor and Danny Carey in the past 20 years. You make really great videos it’s almost perfect. I just won’t be able to sleep until this video has been edited to properly explain that Tool cannot be pigeonholed into any genre but rather they are a jam band that’s on another level spiritually and musically

another reason why Justin's lines are so unique is that he has an approach to the instrument that is typical for guitarists but very rare for bassists: chords, arpeggios, quick hammer ons and pull offs and much more. tool literally have two guitarrists. Justin is like a heavy duty rhythm guitarist

In about 2007 I played at a battle of the bands when me and my mates were 12-13. During judging one of the judges recommended our bassist stop using a pick because no real bassist used a pick. My bassist just went “uhhh Justin chancellor?” And the guy said “who?” We looked at each other and laughed so hard the crowd began to laugh and we proudly took home last place.

That giant 'D' chord was also used by their original bassist Paul D'Amor (check 'Sober'), as well as a lot of the other techniques you mentioned (like harmonics, chords, bright tone etc). Don't underestimate him

Paul did lay the foundation down for the bass in Tool but Justin perfected it. And him bringing his style with that foundation opened up Danny to an array of different drumming sounds.

Both Bass players of Tool Paul D'Amour and Justin brought guitar style approaches to bass. Justin felt like such a natural fit for the band. Its no wonder they unanimously wanted him to become the bassist after D'Amour's departure. Tool: What if guitar...but on Bass?

I've been a fan of Tool for over 17 years, 31 now. They have become my favorite band of all time because of how unique their music is, from the styles of playing the instruments and their use of time signatures. I appreciate you breaking down Justin's parts so well and his contribution to the band- he is so underrated and a complete legend! There was a complete style shift in the music when Paul D'Amour left Tool and Justin replaced him. This is why the early music sounds so different from what we hear today, especially from Lateralus onward. I think this might be my favorite video on KZfaq now!

Many members of Bands are kinda afraid of a more creative Bass Sound. On the other hand an undefined Bass Sound can muddy the whole Thing. Thinking of a Bass Sound is getting interesting when you get a good defined little distorted ground like in electronic music. Every synth Bass is distorted a little to get it saturated. Then every effect mingled into that ground Sound will Sound much richer and way more subtle.

@@PaulvonPaulus That’s a myth perpetrated by bass purest that use fingers only. I’ve been playing bass for over 30 years. I can play with a pick and I can play with my fingers. Using a pick or fingers doesn’t make or break any song. In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t make a huge difference imo.

Paul McCartney became the third highest earning musician of all time playing bass with a pick. A pick is just another tool for a different sound. The best bassists will have pick playing as one of their many skills.

Love Justin Chancellor, his playing definitely adds to Tool’s sound so well and their songs wouldn’t be the same without his touch on songs Schism, The Pot, Forty-Six & 2, Vicarious or Parabola (in my opinion, at least). For a future one of these, a video on Roger Waters, Paul McCartney, John Entwistle, Les Claypool or Jason Newstead would be cool

One of my favorite riffs is The Pot. He makes even 4/4 riffs sound out of this world. Tool is the only band I listen to where I often can’t distinguish between lead guitar and bass because he gets such original sounds from it. Chancellor redefines what bass can do.

My old band was tuned in drop C. Thatz a whole step down on all strings with the LOW E string dropped to C. Sounds awesome in a metal band!

I wouldn't say the parts as such are complicated (ie, not like rush or dream theater, lol), but pulling it off and sounding as good as him is another thing entirely. Sometimes the 'simpler' part is just as difficult as the complicated part.

I find with tool it's almost as if the guitar and bass switch traditional rolls I used tool to teach my friend how to play bass so I can play along with him without playing over him so he could better enjoy the instrument. He now plays for a couple hours a day and has done for 3 years so proud 😁

I absolutely love Justin's style and sound. As a bass player myself, I've been given a lot of crap by various guitar players that I've played with because I play a style that's very similar to what Justin does. I'm not always trying to just keep a low end groove. I'm always trying to harmonize and change the dynamics of a song by playing harmonizing melodies with the guitars and drums. I suppose it takes a certain kind of guitar player ti appreciate this kind of style.

Lusithand Devices makes a real cool preamp for Justin's tone, also there are some pickup makers out there like Rautia Guitars and Herrick Pickups that make great multicoil bass pickups to further get close to Justin's tone.

Just get a Stingray, Proco Rat, Boss eq and a good preamp. Nothing comes closer to a Wal tone. If there is please share a link, because in over a decade of tone chasing i havent heard anything closer.

Nu metal came out in the late 90s and early 2000s. Tool started in 1990, with a hard alternative bent, but with elements of prog and psychedelia. Nu metal; " Intense and angry lyrics, off-pitch guitars, and heavily amplified beats were typical of nu metal songs. The genre was represented most popularly by the bands Korn, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, the Deftones, Evanescence, and Linkin Park " Not even closely related.

He’s also one of the few players whose instrument is actually very important, occasionally crucial (like with the crazy filter sweeps he does sometimes) to his tone. You can get pretty close on most 34-35” scale solidbodies, preferably bolt-ons, but it’s REAL hard to absolutely nail it without a Wal.

@@Toolmybass I can get REALLY close on most TOOL songs with my US Sterlings, I’m sure a Stingray would be just as close with a little EQing, but there are things that can kinda only be done with that crazy Wal preamp on certain Chancellor bass lines. He does these wild filter sweep swell things with the preamp controls. I’m sure someone well-versed in effects could replicate them some other way, I just don’t know what it’d be.

I know that there are technically "better" bassists out there but Justin is still by far my favorite because he is such an interesting, tasteful, uniquely melodic player that comes up with very unusual melodies, time signatures, and rhythms. Justin, Adam, and Danny are all really big inspirations to me. Maynard is too, but I can't sing so I can only appreciate his vocal melodies and lyrics.

I agree. I spent a decade in a Prog-Metal band, playing stuff that could fit on Dream Theater and Symphony X albums. Then, after that band broke up, I joined a Thrash band. I started showing ideas and the guys were like 'Uh......you've got some weird counts in there.' Little by little, those weird counts finally took hold. 6 years later, the drummer often doesn't even realize that I've tricked him into playing outside of 4-4.

Forget slap man! Hell yeah, I have found myself. I play bass like guitar myself. I think of myself similarly to Mike Dirnt, Lemmy, Geezer Butler, Chris Squire and Justin Chancellor. For one I’m much more precise with a pick on the bass, and I can groove like a boss

Justin Chancellor is an incredible bassist. But I disagree on the "Nu Metal" tag for Tool. Their sound is clear and articulated, and the writing is elaborated. Very far ahead Nu Metal. Thank for sharing and Cheers from Canada mate !
