Welcome back to part 2 of Justin Chancellor's Amplifier and effects pedal rig. In this video we cover every amplifier rig he has used through TOOL. Then get down and dirty with some effects pedals.
We also explore Justin's 3 way output configuration and get tangled up in his strings.
Justin has used Mesa Boogie Cabinets and amplifiers throughout TOOL. Midway through his career he switched amplifiers to Gallien Krueger. As for pedals ... well you just have to watch it.

meh, I just wish I could understand how he does some of the things he does. There's some bits of his sound I don't like, like how noticeable his picks are. I personally am dreaming of a Warwick 2000W amp with a 4X15 cab... that would be fucking AMAZING!

I think tones like Justins or that of Chris Wolstenholme (Muse) and Mike Kerr (Royal Blood) are actually a perfect use case for Multi-Effects on Bass for once. Most demos Ive seen just check out the amp/cab sims, maybe a few drive and synth sound while never using these Effects to their full potential. You save so much money, weight and headache, especially with some of these sought-after pedals not being available anymore or very rare and expensive

I saw them on the Aenima tour in 97 I think and the sound was so amazing I wouldn't be surprised of they were just playing the CD and pretending to play along. That's how good it sounded. Which shows how much they had captured their true sound in the studio. And I was trippin balls. TOOL! 🤘🤘🤘🤘

So I spent all of lockdown building Justin’s pedalboard and rig as well as I could. I pretty much have everything on the board itself excluding all of the vintage pedals (the tremolo, the fuzz, fuzz-wah, and rx overdrive), but replaced the last 2 with Justin’s new pedal which I assume it was for anyway. I have a vintage GK head and 4x10 cab for the Clean/Wet side, and a Peavey Max 150 for the Dirty side, and a Peavey Minx 110 for the Direct signal. I’m also using a MusicMan Stingray HH or a Fender P Bass. I can’t get the new FuzzWah to sound right on the side it’s supposed to be on…at least the wah part by itself. The fuzz and fuzz wah sound right for some reason, but I had to move it to the dirty side…I think it has something to do with it being an active bass because I have to keep the fuzz dial turned almost all the way down. I have a hard time getting the levels balanced between all the outputs to where the harmonics ring out clearly on both the Wah and the Whammy. if anyone knows of a solution I would be very grateful.

Thanks dude. Super thorough! Such an incredible bassist, probably the best in my humble opinion. He covers so much ground in Tool, I love the interplay between him and AJ. I think it's so important to have a solid fundamental clean tone always in the mix, on top of which distortion and effects can be layered. We mere mortals should always strive to have a great clean DI tone underneath the dirt, but if you can have an awesome clean amp tone mic'd up in there as well, why not? One thing I've never understood about his set up. I've seen numerous times (including pics in this video) that the 4X12 is mic'd not on the speaker or even the tweeter, but on the actual wood of the cabinet. You can see it on the pic at 3:14 and on the Dunlop TV vid. What's that about?
@WhichBass
@WhichBass 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Robert, glad you liked the video. The hole in the cab is the bass reflex. If I remember correctly it will enhance the sub range. Not only do you get the sound from the front facing speaker. You have a deep sub resonance from the whole cab. Check out the wiki page for more of the Acoustically knowledge en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bass_reflex

Congratulations Phalanges, that's absolutely brilliant to hear you found your own style through Justin. Players always want to be the next Cliff Burton or Justin Chancellor but the world doesn't need a copy of them. As you've said, you found your style by exploring Justin's and taking the bits you like (and can afford!). That makes be very happy to hear that, good for you.

Which Bass It's actually surprisingly portable. WAY better than the Ampeg 8×10 fridge I used to lug around. I use a 1992 ESP Horizon 5 string into a Sansamp RBI rackmount pre-amp powered by an SWR 750 watt power amp. With a couple pieces of outboard gear. Soundguys at clubs loved me because they could take a DI straight from the back of the Sansamp and then mike my cab as well. Very very easy to get an incredible live sound out of.

The PH 1000 have been great sounding cabs. They only had one mayor problem. Due to the wiring the 15" speaker had to deal with the same ammount of power as all 4 10" together had. This killed a lot of those 15" speakers, some of them literally went on fire due to overheating. Using two 410" and a 215" with an amp powering every stack is a much better combination soundwise and will cause no such problems. Which is essential when you gig a lot.

It's all good except for one detail. The Prescription Electronics Overdriver is in the clean chain along with the other pedals. The dirty chain only has the Rat and the Boss GEB-7. If you look at the Dunlop video, the splitter box clearly has an output labelled Pedals 1-11. If you count up the pedals starting with the tuner and ending on the fuzz wah, you only get 10. The Overdriver is probably placed above the other pedals for space reasons and also because it is only used for one song, the intro to Flood. The Foxx Fuzz Wah is also only used in the middle section of The Pot.
@WhichBass

The Foxx is still on Justin's board. This photo was posted on 10 June 2018 facebook.com/ToolMusic/photos/a.141567499237061.26216.138504519543359/1771567666237028/?type=3&theater

Can someone explain me why the GT2 is on the clean signal and how Justin sets it up? On dunlop tv we clearly see the drive knob is off. So he use it as an amp sim to team up with his GK head?

What an amazing video! It can be tough with some musicians to know the gear. I do have a request though it may not be too popular, the bassist from the band Dredg, Drew Roulette. I've scoured the internet and find little. Either way thanks for all your work!

Colorsound Tone Benders are 700-1,000$ these days so if your trying to make Justin Chancellor pedal board, just know with all the other things you could be spending 7-9k on all the equipment
@adamnesbitt11
@adamnesbitt11 Жыл бұрын
Fortunately there are about 100 nice clones of the Tone Bender, and if you're handy with a soldering iron it's a pretty simple circuit to reproduce yourself

When I switched to a .110 it was like heaven opened up. Then I switched to a .115 and I saw the light 😂 But seriously, floppy bass strings suck. Great video!
@WhichBass
@WhichBass 6 жыл бұрын
Haha awesome, thicker strings do have their place. I was in a back with C standard tuning and my bass just sounds shit in C. I bought a 5 string instead and tuned everything up. The thicker strings made all the difference.

great vid mate......would you recommend any bass preamp pedal to get a similar tone?
@WhichBass
@WhichBass 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Llewellyn, I think it would be difficult to recommend one pedal to get the sound. Justins' sound is a combination of amplifier grind and effects.
