Rajiv doesn't own a lot of footwear, but he takes care of the boots and shoes he wears and loves. Polishing Shoes, a basic skill that everyone should have.
Correction: Rajiv mentioned two types of shoe polish, turpentine-based and alcohol based. The two main type of shoe polish are actually:
"Wax-Based": the type of polish Rajiv used in this video, containing wax and a solvent (turpentine). These polishes are generally a hard cake inside the tin.
"Cream-Emulsion": containing some waxes but also water and emulsifiers (like ammonia). These polishes have a creamy consistency, like softened cream cheese.
To achieve the results in this video, use a wax-based shoe polish.

Rajiv~ This is a subject dear to my heart as I was active duty for 4 years in the US Army and polishing jump boots and brass insignia are a part of life there. I can remember a simple piece of advise that may sound trite, but it isn’t: ‘You don’t polish the boot, you polish the polish.’ And yes, in the end, bring it to a luster with a tightly rolled knee high stocking. Thank you as always, Rajiv. Important topic more than the average person gives credit.

Your story at the end about the guy polishing your shoes made me cry! Because….. I met my late husband in the early 90’s when we both worked at an old fashioned (good customer service) shoe shop and he would often polish the customers scuffed shoes for them while they were trying on new shoes. There is a certain brand of shoe polish that as soon as the lid comes off, the smell takes me back to those days and falling in love with that lovely lovely man! He would have loved this video! He certainly loved shiny shoes, but I don’t think he knew the water “trick”

My dad recently went home to glory, and as I was cleaning out his home this past weekend, I found his wooden shoebox with precious drops of shoe polish splattered throughout and two of his wooden vintage shoe brushes. Just so incredibly precious as my dad treasured every single thing he did on a daily basis. He would often say, "I walked a thousand miles today." I will treasure this precious jewel of an item forever more. Love and miss you dad! ❤😢

For four decades, since joining the military, have taken great joy polishing shoes, boots, and leather care. In service we called boot shine sessions “Kiwi Parties”. I still have my original shoe brush and a shoe shine box with a boot rest. A hack for spit shine we used was a cotton ball and water. Once the boot is polished use a cotton ball with water to buff to a glass can do your make up in the reflection shine. We also used panty hose to buff holding each side and and back and forth over and over really fast. This helped us prep them, too, for a glass like spit shine. This can help if a shoe needs a gloss finish. Cotton , from an old tee or baby diaper were the best base coat and like the panty hose method way to glass shine. Cotton ball for the final touch. If there’s a nick or gouge in the leather can buff with fine sandpaper used for metal. Then use leather die. Then polish. Thin layers until the space is filled and blends. There’s so many important ways to care for leather. I always start with treating the leather for weather. Passed this down to my son who does similarly for his business shoes. This video is wonderful. Most of your videos make me feel seen as sometimes I felt like the only one interested in the enjoyment of restoration and rehabbing or repurposing items. Thank you for sharing this technique. Well done sir 😊

Key takeaway: Acts of service is Rajiv's love language 😊 Such a wonderful story at the end, Rajiv! Couldn't agree more about how special those moments are. When we immigrated to the US, I only had one pair of white sneakers that my mom would wash every day for me when I came home from school. My teacher asked my mom one day, amazed at how clean they were, Wow, how many shoes does your little girl have? My mom proudly said one and my teacher was flabbergasted. This video came at the perfect time because my shoes need some polishing - thanks Rajiv.

'what is your skin & hair care routine' ? {They look so healthy & radiant} 2. 'Is it your wish to always live alone' ? {sharing may change level of freedom} 3. 'do you see your self perhaps one day moving to the countryside' ? {you appear to love being in such places} 4. "do you see your self one day perhaps adopting a dog' ? {your have expressed a love for them} I used to polish my motorcycle harness boots when I was riding Harley's more often before I got married.

Oh my goodness you made me teary-eyed! I loved playing in my Dad’s Closet! Lol😂 Dad was an Ol’ Time Family Physician, who never lost his Mother’s Strict English Rules of Etiquette & Elegance. (They would dress up for Sunday Dinner always) Dad wore his Suit & Tie for work, even though he would be sliding into his doctor coat. My favorite treasure was his old Wooden Shoeshine Box with a handle, full of shoeshine tools. It had a shoe lift (a Shoe Horse) to support the shoe so you could shine them easier. But the highlight was his Electric Shoeshine Buffer Machine! It had cone-shaped ends. One side was red, and the other was black bristles. It buffed his shoes to perfection! I am laughing all the way today! This was an epic ‘throw-back’ and tender walk down memory lane! You are such a hoot! Thanks Mr NYC🗽🤍🍎 btw…take us On Broadway🎭The Plaza🎠Serendipity 🍧the MET🎨please…xo

I also prefer to buy good leather shoes & boots. I got a new tin of polish recently & was disgusted at its poor quality. It didn't have the lovely smell I always found reassuring. I had a chat with a cobbler recently where I learned about the best polish that's now available. He said 'but it's more expensive than the cheap supermarket type'. I told him I didn't care, I wanted polish that gave a good result & I'd go there next time.

I used to polish my dad’s dress shoes as part of my allowance. The sound of the horsehair brush against the polish and leather is very nostalgic to me. (The way I was taught was to use the actual bristles against the shoe in a gentle back and forth striking motion. It took longer to get a shine but it was lovely.)

Thank you for doing a video on this. Most people today don't polish their shoes. It's partly because they view things as disposable and partly because people don't think others will notice. Well, I do! My late father always believed in polishing shoes. He said "If you walk around with shoes that have holes in the soles, people will think you're poor and feel sorry for you. But if you walk around with shoes that are unpolished, people will think you're sloppy." My late father-in-law was happy that when I married his son, I always made sure to polish his shoes. He said that HR managers in his day would always glance at your shoes to size you up as a job candidate.

You've taken me back to my days as a police recruit when we were taught how to put a "spit shine' on our real leather boots before morning Parade at police college. Boy they had to pass muster when the Instructors gave you the once over. We used old pantyhose too for the last polish and they always knew who had actually done their own boots by the telltale residue under your index fingernail (no latex gloves ). . . lol. It's nice to see someone taking the time to care for expensive footwear and caring enough to look smart.

Loved the video thoroughly. I was engrossed and was smiling all ghe way to the end with contentment. Wnen I was young, from late teen to early 20s, I would take the bus to college. There used to be a cobbler right next to the bus stop mending shoes. I would watch him and wonder how he managed his family from the small income(those days). I have a gift (from the invisible man in the sky😅) to befriend anyone from different walks of life and make them feel comfortable with me. So I would interact with him by asking what stuff he was using like needle, thread(BTW I learnt how to sew the torn sandals by watching him😂), polish etc. One day he told me jokingly in Tamil language "Ma, please don't take away my job. This is my bread and butter". I replied "I will never do that. I am just curious to learn". Rajiv, watching you polish brought back all those memories. Your Deutsche is like mine aka angry poetry🤣🤣🤣. I learnt German(Math and Physics are littered with great German minds) when I was in my 20s. Germany is no 1 on my bucket list to visit in Europe. Vielen dank. Auf wiedersehen...

Polishing shoes is immensely satisfying and a great way to relax the mind. It gives you a strong sense of taking care of your own things, and by extension yourself, all while requiring very little practice, just a minimum of advice or demonstration. And you feel spunky afterward to boot. EDIT: It had never occurred to me how obvious it is that polishing someone else's shoes for them would convey the same feelings of care. I will keep that one in my back pocket.

Many decades ago, in a "Reaader's Digest" story, the author's father died. A neighbor came to the house to give his condolences, and said, "I will polish your shoes, everyone's shoes." As he sat, quietly polishing shoes, family members brought him their shoes. The neighbor never said, "What can I do for you?". He was specific, which the grieving family could do what was needed. They were ever grateful for the neighbor's kindness.

Back when my daughter was just a baby, I went to spend the weekend with my mother at the house I grew up in. I took her out in the carriage for a walk and saw a dear friend of my grandmother's, who was probably one of the last still alive. I went up her driveway and reintroduced myself as it been 20+ years since she had seen me. I then thanked her for the many memories I had of our tea parties and blueberry picking. She till had the shelves of her cream pitchers that she collected on her travels. My mother told me that whenever she would see Mrs Starr, she would say, "Did I tell you that little Debby came to visit me?" I didn't think my visit would've been that significant. As a rule, we tend to remember the negative things from our past and NOT the positive ones. Those little things make a difference. The same thing happened when I sought out my art teacher who had been with me from 1st grade through high school. I was probably in my late 50s then and I thanked him for his influence on me, particularly because I went to college in my 40s & was an art major. He told me that I was the ONLY student that ever reached out to him … EVER. Your story about your teacher's husband polishing your shoes and how much that still means to you reminded me of my experience. Kindness goes a long way and lasts a lifetime …

People my age in the UK probably grew up with a parent who did national service ( conscription) and a grandparent who was in ww1 or ww2. We were taught how to polish our shoes thanks to their expertise. The method you showed is I think where the phrase 'Spit and Polish ' come from. Layering the wet with the wax.

I really dislike the smell of turpentine. Gives me a banging headache in seconds of smelling it. Love love a polished leather shoe or boot evening when it is worn. That was joyful to watch . Thank you. I love the story of Dave polishing your shoes.

As always Rajiv. A good video. Enjoyable, educational & relaxing. I still polished my shoes. I grew up seeing my father polish his & he taught me how to do it. I'm not as fussy as you are. I just do it the way I was taught as a child. I've always had shoe polish at my disposal, rags, polishing pads & my father's original old brushes. I use them they work & I like that they are natural bristles set in wooden frames. Your technique differs from mine but next time, I'll try yours. Like you, I love how they shine when done & know there's more life left in them.

Another very nice how to video. Great job Rajiv most people struggles nowadays to know how to polish or even thinking to polish. This was very common thing to polish with older generations. I don’t see or hear younger generations doing it. Pushing also keep the leather nice and soft and last longer. 👏
