Recently we have been shouted out by ‪@thepoorhammerpodcast‬ on one of their videos and to show our appreciation, we would like to dedicate an episode on How to Poorhammer, and that means 3D printing! This illusive magic solution to the cost of Warhammer and tabletop gaming in general, but is it truly as cheap as it is Hyped up to be?
(this may have been out a lot sooner if Cal wasn't very sick you will see in the next episode...)

Excellent analysis of 3D printing. Some people have more time than money, I have more money than time at my stage of life, so I am OK with buying from GW or purchasing models other people have printed. I bought "all the things" for 3D printing but I really only print basing materials and terrain, maybe an occasional proxy, because I haaaaaaaaaaaaate cleaning resin prints. It's nice having a 3D printer, but it is indeed its own hobby.

The easiest way to see the costs of 3D printing is trying to buy 3d printed models. Suddenly the "50 cent of resin only!" is no where to be seen.

>The easiest way to see the costs of 3D printing is trying to buy 3d printed models. >Suddenly the "50 cent of resin only!" is no where to be seen. Not sure how I comment on that. The easiest way to see the costs of cleaning your room is trying to buy cleaning service. Suddenly the "it's free" is no where to be seen. How guys having to pay for things like shop space and staff as well as making money doing so relate to your own cost? Especially with niche hobby. It is ofc still not free and additional costs like procuring stl's, auxiliary usable things (filters, IPA, safety measures), but putting paid service as a stand-in for DYI hobby seems kinda disingenuous.

Thanks for covering 3D printing like this! I've seen the topic discussed on several other channels, but you all went more in depth with the potential drawbacks especially in terms of how it might be as simple and straightforward as people assume it is. And I hope you don't feel too constrained by your niche. Personally I get the most out of hearing the same topic discussed by multiple people. So even if it covers the same basic content I'd enjoy hearing your spin on typical 40k subjects too. Also the MTG intro was neat because the crossover is much larger than I realized. It was buying cards in a shop many years ago that I first saw Warhammer and never really knew what it was. I've long since moved on from MTG, but it's finally coming full circle.

We do feel a little constrained but largely because it is talk about Warhammer and nothing else if you want success. We think there is so much to talk about. Like with 3D printing when is it a pile of shame vs bits box vs pile of opportunity. Anvil industries is amazing but you only have so much room in a section to talk about people. I would love to talk more about dungeons and lazers Sunny too. But if we want to see growth it is talk about space marines. And I like space marines but I like ice cream too but I might only have ice cream once a month. But we are super glad to hear people enjoying our take

I buy 3D printing resin models from "artisants" and in my opinion it's more a job/art than a hobby. What they can do right now is amasing, as good as the models from big companies. But maybe I will buy a filament printer in the future, for terrains and for little stuff to customise.

I agree with the hidden costs aspect of it. Production time is a big contributor and consumables. I'd say if you are going past a certain point in size in 3d printing, it's comparable to get the official release of things. 3d printing has extended my time and my playgroups time by giving us more options in the hobby and introduced us to other game systems. I'm very lucky to have a decent computer to set up good prints, and I'm also lucky enough to have a little more time and space to set up an okay 3d printing area. Thanks for the great video and keep up the great work.

You forgot to take the utilities in to account. Not only does the printer consume electricity during long print times, but in many countries you also need to heat up the printer the whole time to prevent the resin failing. The economy went to hell last year (at least in the UK) and gas and electricity are still way more costly than they used to be. I've not ran my printer since, but I'd be curious to see if these costs dwarf all the other costs considerably.
@WhatareyouPaintingnow

You know what you are right, we did miss that, that is our mistake. I think that is due to us being Australian and let's just say the heat is more of a problem for us quite often.

3D printing is the best investment ive made in my hobby world... but this video is entirely right. Its FAR FAR cheaper and more customizable than normal warhammer models, but the time complications need to be known. Even including every cost, 3d printing is not even 50% of the cost of regular warhammer, but it should be noted that all the difficulties are real and need to be known.

Yeah this was essentially what we were trying to fight against just buy printer everything is solved... It's fantastic but there are things to learn
@jaqssmith1666
@jaqssmith1666 5 ай бұрын
here's how you make 3d printing not a hobby in itself: learn how to over support models: there is a point where you have supported a model more than you need to l, but not so much that it's hard to clean up. Save each supported stl separately and before you load a build plate for slicing: When you put a model on the slicer's build plate, the number of objects is what slows the program, not so much the model's faces. If you're supporting models on the same build plate that you're going to slice, you will overload the program as each support part is a new object. when you save a supported stl, all those objects are joined into one. so if you have a build plate with in-slicer supports you may hafe 1000 or more objects for 12 or so unsupported .stls. when those same .STLs are supported, saved, and then arranged for slicing, you will only have 12 objects. Only use the resin that works for you. once you find a resin that works-stick to it. and don't make mixtures. start with the standard grey resin from the brand that made your printer. If that one has odd results, try a standard grey from another brand. High performance engineering resin can be good, but you don't need then for game peices UNLESS those peices have have lots of delicate parts. even then a standard resin will be tough enough for normal play. use a wash and cure station with a primary rinsing tub. when the print comes off a printer dunk it in a first stage alcohol tub to get off the bulk of the resin, then put it in the wash station. this will clean basically all of the uncured resin. once the first stahe tub is too dirty, put the saturated alcohol in a bottle in the sun and then dispose of it in the chemical waste collection for paint and other stuff. if you use a pre-rinse to remove the bulk of the resin, you're models will not be tacky when they come out of the wash station. it will be time to cycle the metho the moment you think the clean models might be a bit tacky. With clean models, you can touch them if you wash your hand immediately with a good degreasing soap. use methylated spirits. you don't need IPA or other expensive stuff, cheap metho works as well. vent to atmosphere. there is always a solution to vent to atmosphere. the easiest way is a cheap blower fan and an AC window vent kit, combined with a cardboard and shower curtain fume hood. If you cycle your metho through your wash station and primary rinse, only touch the build plate's connector bracket until the models are proprtly clean, use a fume hood, only use one resin, over-support your own models, and wash your hands with an industrial soap (then moisturise to take care of your skin); resin printing is no harder than using a paper printer with refillable ink cartridge, and the only consumables you need are resin and metho.

Phrozen is great!!! got half a dozen of their machines, all of them are great work horses. However I think there is a pretty simple test to see if it is worth it or not. Are you going to print one army (2-4k pts)? Maybe but leaning on no. Are you going to print anything more than one army? Then absolutely! But hands down the biggest problem with 3d printing is getting addicted... now I print 1-2 full armies a month! 😂 Also I would wonder if the time cost of 3d printing is almost entirely offset by generally cutting way down on assembly time?

I'll actually keep that in mind, given that I pondered whether it's worth to go into 3D printing or not. Not necessarily to proxy Warhammer models, I'd argue that this isn't a main issue. If at all I would only print parts that help me to get those plastic rakes clean from all the bits I'll probably never use other than in a kitbash otherwise. The main reason why 3D printing would feel more appealing to me would be to create my own line of models with their own rules, given that I realize alongside Legions Imperialis, that there is a whole world out there with small miniatures out there, mostly talking here about small miniature ranges that can represent entire armys. Yet most of them are historic wargames and others seem quite obscure. I also saw that some people solve the issue by creating armies out of mesh and other cheap materials with the end results still looking amazing. Yet I'm not sure if for what I plan that would suffice. My ideas would rather resolve around the aspect of small miniatures carrying bigger miniatures - sorta like ship fights, but set in a fantasy or sci-fi setting perhaps. To some degree I feel like it would require me to go into 3D printing, especially if I want to at least form out an idea here that could provide me perhaps a more interesting job in the future (and yeah I know how risky it can be to turn a hobby into a job), but then again I feel like I fall into the category of the clumsy persons here. So probably it might be a better idea to rather keep things here on the sketchboard only and just write the rules in hopes that one day someone with a 3D printer could profit from the ideas I have. Not saying here that I need to monetize these, but given that I already have a book project and am definitly not utilizing my time correctly (half of my day 6 days a week usually is regular salesman buiseness atm), I guess a 3D printer for the rest of the time I have isn't really the best investment, given that I also want to utilize free days with the miniature hobby when possible.

Also, I want to change the psycho culture around “You need to pay ungodly amounts of money and buy only the right brand of toys to enjoy the hobby.” I don’t owe GW or any company anything. I actually only have one official warhammer mini, (which I got for free at paxu23 at the warhammer paint and take) everything else I’ve ordered and painted has been 3d printed because I wanted an army that was inspired by and looked like characters from media that I love. The painting side of this hobby is enough for me I suppose but it’s a shame that I could be barred from playing against certain opponents or participating in events because my buy in is seen as less legitimate. It would be cool to have a game that cared less about the specific materials involved and was designed around easily enabling players to play with what they’ve spent time on.

I have been printing models for about 5 years, and the hidden costs are really minimal. Alcohol and resin is the only real one that I've had to deal with. In the US, gloves are incredibly cheap at walmart, and the only other stuff I've bought specifically for hobbying aren't related to 3d printing (paint, primer, brushes) I started with an "entry-level" printer (Anycubic Photon) and after two years I upgraded to a "midrange" printer (Elegoo Saturn S). I would have had a much easier experience had I skipped the first. The difference in price relative to quality and speed is excellent. My advice as a random guy on the internet is to not buy the cheapest printer, because it usually will cost only slightly more for a better, more durable, faster printer.

The need for air quality and filters while doing almost any aspect of the hobby should be in place. Glues and solvents are largely a source of VOC's. The particles of sanding plastics are bad in cuts or breathing and can cause the same issues. FDM printing has hazards like printing Nylon can kill without venting properly. The resin hazards are valid but they also vary greatly depending on brand or formula. I think the hobby needs more general safety planning as part of the investment cost upfront and hit the main points. If you don't do the hobby responsibly don't expect to do it long.

Like you say - 3D printing is a hobby in and of itself. And if you are not interested in getting into this extra hobby, then it is not for you. If you are just hoping to get some quick and cheap minis to paint, then it is likely to frustrate you and be a failure. And you did not cover how it is painting and especially preparing resin figures. They can be harder to trim and while cured resin isn't a health issue it is if you are working it, drilling and so on.
