How to potty train your puppy to use puppy pads

In this video I show you my favorite washable potty pads . I also explain my method on how to train your puppy to use a puppy pad . You must first commit to watch your puppy any time they are not in a small confined area. When they are out of their area, you will need to watch for signs of needing to potty such as circling. Take your puppy to the area where the puppy pad is and use a key phrase that will be used later on when you need them to potty on demand. Give a small high value treat when they potty on the puppy pad . Don't scold your puppy/pet if and when they have a accident ....instead, bop your own self on the head because you weren't watching them lol

Thank you for posting this information. We ordered the same pads you recommended in the link and they are truly wonderful. I adore the fact that the puppy doesn't play with them as greatly as they do with the disposable type. So far our 12 week old shih tzu has hit the mark on these more often than not. Cheers.

This has been so helpful!!! I used your advice about using a special word and every time I say it my 10 month old chihuahua goes right on her pad! It amazes me how quick she picked up on it! This is almost exactly what we did with our Shih Tzu, only with disposable pads since we didn't know there were washable ones. I just love this video, and it has reinforced my initial thoughts on training our Zoey, who is now 9 months old. Keeping her on the pad until she went potty worked great and she picked up the concept quickly. Thank you for sharing your expertise and experience with we puppy/dog owners. Zoey does love being outside and she usually poops out there and lets us know when she has to go but will pee on demand outside if we are going somewhere with her and want her to be comfortable in the car. If it is storming or muddy and we/she doesn't want to be outside, she will poop on the puppy pad in the house. Basically, like you said in your video, you HAVE to pay attention to what the puppy is doing at all times if she is not confined. Thank you again.

Thank you so much. I have an older dog who is having difficulty with arthritis now and bladder control and living on the third floor of a "no elevator" apartment building it was becoming a huge issue to get her out every three hours to potty.

Only 1 problem is that the dog would start to associate rugs for pads too and goes on it. This is what happening to one of my dogs that are potty pads trained. So, I cannot have any rugs on the floor so basically you gotta make the pad very distinctive like may be certain height and length or scented, because now, I can never have any rugs on the floor:(((

Absolutely! We just finished potty training our puppy and we got him used to the pads at first by grabbing him when he started to go and running him to the pad even if he missed a little we rewarded him. We took him out occasionally so our other dog could show him how to go potty outside. once he was used to the potty pad we inched it closer to the door every day and actually took some outside with us for him to go on outside. When the pad was close to the door there was a bell we would ring on the door after he went. Eventually he would ring the bell we'd jump up and take him out and he goes outside! We still keep some inside his cage when we're gone. We only keep them in his cage however we keep his cage open when we're home so he can go in there and use it if he forgets to ring the bell. I hope this helps!

This is a late reply so I hope you have resolved the issue by now. But if not, if you pay attention to where your dog has accidents, you will be able to pinpoint certain spots where he likes to go. That is where you should place the pads. My puppy loved to go under my bed and in the kitchen so I thought hey, I should put pads in those areas too. And what do you know, he started using the pads. Also, make sure you take him to the pad each time after he wakes up from a long nap, or every few hours. If he tries to move elsewhere, grab him and keep placing him on the pad until he finally goes. It may take 10+ minutes before he finally goes, depending on how stubborn he is. I used to make the mistake of assuming that he didn't want to go, or he would just go pee, and I would take my eyes off him for one second and that's when he would poop elsewhere. So just make sure you keep an eye on him. If you see him start squatting, take him to the pad IMMEDIATELY. Don't forget to reward him with a treat and verbal praise after he uses the pad. If he has an accident, give him a firm NO and show him where he needs to go. It's a trial and error kind of thing. Be patient. It will take time. Hope I helped. :)

Matti N. how did you fix this?? I have a puppy that completely ignores all pads, gives no clues he's about to go and is soooo stubborn. I will sit with him for one to two hours and he still won't go. He is also going pee in his crate even if he's only been in there for five to ten minutes. So frustrated. Please help!

When your dog pees on the floor, push the pad on to the urine. Now, after you clean up, put the puppy pad on top of where the puppy peed. Now your puppy will smell the urine and will learn in time to go there. Some puppy pads advertise they have an odor on them to encourage puppies or dogs to pee on them. If you have a side door or back door, put a pad next to there. Put the pad by the door, so when your puppy runs to the door to go outside, but you aren't home, your dog should be able to use the pad. You can find some good car pet cleaner that is not expensive and is pet friendly at a Petstore. They should all be carpet safe to keep from ruining the color on the rug. Vinegar or Lysol can help get rid of the odor and all of the pee and poop germs as well.

I do not crate my baby except during car rides and when we are visiting relatives. Do you suggest I get one of these large ones for puppy pad training ?? I currently have the whole hallway covered with puppy pads because she keeps going "next to a pad" instead of "on it".....so then I extend the area of puppy pads. I fear half my house will be covered soon. And my baby is an inside "pottier" as well. I work 3 days a week, 12 hour shifts, so I'd hate to crate her for that long of a period. Please help !!

Dominique Cohens me too I know your frustration,, at FIRST I didn't have a confined area,,,but once I got a confine space for my yorkie, he eventually started peeing and poop in that confined area..as she explained its very time consuming especially and LOTS of patience,,, but just keep it consistently , hope that helps

it is soo good, we keep ours in the bath room, right beside our toilet. Whenever we move or travel in hotels, all we have to do is laid the pad down then my dogs will just do their business :D

Hi! It is possible to train for both! I pick up poop when it happens:) and I change daily or twice a day ....morning and night ( because I have 4 dogs ) and I also wash them once a day. I think you will LOVE the ease of indoor pottying in your climate!! I LOVE it!!!

I get so tired of going out in the cold in winter & when it rains. Miss Lucie, diva that she is, doesn't like to get her feet wet or refuses to go when it's cold. So it's usually a wasted trip. I think potty pads would fix that.
