A short tutorial on How to Prepare a Live Steam Locomotive for operation on your Garden Railway.
The Model Featured in this video is an Accucraft "Caradoc" 0-4-0T (Fitted with Radio Control), which is a pretty standard Live Steam Locomotive to prepare, though other locomotive may require a different technique.
Be sure to read the instructions included with your model, and always be careful when handing Gas, Lighters or the Locomotive while at operational temperature.

well that was a great video for anyone thinking about getting into a steam garden railway. great job I am amazed at the amount of prep work involved with this. but truly makes sense if you want to keep running for years to come Thanks for sharing

It might be wise to add, that most live steam loco’s in 1:32 and 1.22,5 have a Ronson cap on the gastank. This will squirt when the tank is filled. However, some manufacturers, Regner is one, use an oldfashioned cap. Now when you fill the tank it DOESN’T seem to work

That Caradoc does look good in black! A very well constructed video. I personally follow the GOW system for filling locos, gas, oil, water. This allows any excess gas to dissipate while sorting the rest of the loco. Remembering butane is heavier than air and sinks to collect around the bottom of the loco.

Very informative. This one must be good for someone starting out. I have been watching Kieth Appleton lately as he rebuilds Stewart steam engines and on his railway around his house. Good video, I was paying close attention and enjoyed your instructional video. Rob

To add gas you need to press the nozzle a few times. So you start by pressing the nozzle, then fill with some tas and then press again until it stops shedding liquid. Usually you should do this about three times to fill the tank. Regner and other manufacturers do deliver a ronson fitting and will set you back about 15 quid.

There r too many steam up instrn portion of this live steam locos here in utube. But none for how to keep them running. E.g., While the engine is running, u must keep an eye on the water ga, pressure ga, how fast or slow it's running and what to do about it. What wld u do when suddenly, the pressure drops though fuel s/b full etc. etc. C if u can simulate the symptoms and tell us how to fix them.

Thanks ever so much Michael! Glad you enjoyed! With the Caradoc you then to get about 35 - 40 mins of run, before it runs out of gas. Though I tend to get about 25 - 30 minutes, as the engine tends to get though the water quicker due to the sharp bends and climbs on the railway. I tend to stop the engine, before it runs out of gas, just to make sure it does not run out. Better to be safe than sorry :)

Hi Keith. It's totally dependent on a number of factors. The biggest being what sort of railway your running the loco on. My line has lots of sharp curves and steep gradients, which requires the regulator to be opened more often, which does lower the average running time some what. I normally get around 10 mins out of a run. Hope it's of help

Aren't all the gas type locos designed so that the gas tank will run out first?

Most are, I including this one. However, I like to be safe than sorry. Due to the tight corners and inclines on my railway the engine has to work harder for longer, so tends to use more water. I've also got a Regner Conrad, which gas tank is larger than the water tank, so have to keep an eye when running that one

I did check that, but they still could have minerals in which could build up from what I heard, plus the water from the dehumidifier is a waste product, so technically free :)

Sadly I think the Caradoc is not produced by Accucraft any more, so you'll have to look on Ebay or second hand sellers. Though Accucraft now produce new version, which is only slightly different, called a Ragleth

From what I've been told distilled water is very similar to the water that comes from the condenser on a dry and dehumidifier (which is what i use). The bonus with this is it's free, as it's a waste product from those items
