As a sub myself here's a tip: I understand making plans easy for everyone, including sub, yourself, and students. If you can, try to make the assignment or activity that is being given is something that the students are actually learning around that time, or relates to it in some way. I find students can tell when it is busywork vs a genuine learning opportunity. It helps with classroom management as well, if they know the work is meaningful.
