If you’re wondering how to prevent muscle loss with aging, watch this interview with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon. Sarcopenia can be mitigated by optimizing your diet and lifestyle. Learn the key to longevity during this in-depth interview.
Muscle loss in the elderly, or at any age, can be reversed. It’s possible to maintain muscle while losing weight, and maintain muscle as you age - even after menopause.
In it, you’ll learn Dr. Gabrielle Lyon’s protein recommendations, diet and workout regimen, and why she founded the Muscle-Centric Medicine™ movement.
Highlights From This Episode:
- “How much protein do I need and how much protein per meal?”
- “How can you help to prevent muscle mass loss as you age?”
- “How does protein impact insulin?”
- “What is the protein threshold for muscle synthesis?”
- “What is leucine and why is it so important for healthy muscles?”
- “What’s the best exercise program to build muscle?”
- Dr. Lyon's top 3 mindset tips to lose weight and get healthy.
Note: Reshape Physical Therapy and Wellness evolved into Weight Loss for Health, and finally Zivli. How to Lose Weight After 50 was our first course that eventually grew into Zivli. Some old blog posts or resources mentioned in this episode may have been removed.

I am 75 yrs old. A cardiologist told me I had a 45% risk of arterial sclerosis based on my age. I requested a CAC test. He said we don't order those insurance doesnt pay for that. The test is $75.00 and non Invasive. I demanded the test. My score was zero. "0". I have no plaque! My cholesterol was 218 but my triglycerides were good. He was wanting to put me on statins prior to the test results. It is frightening to think how many people are wrongly diagnosed based only on age!

My mother died of cancer a month and a half after my tenth and four days short of her forty second birthday. Of four kids, I was the one that most resembled my mom. From that time in my life I thought I would be dead by forty. All these years later, I'm the only one in my family to not have gotten cancer. I'm also the only one to have been athletic, never smoked and drank minimumally. I've long passed forty and still work out and ride my bike. The down side for me has been that I never planned for post fourty life and am now having to make it up as I go. Not a really bad problem to have.

This is so inspiring and encouraging. I’m 68 years old and was diagnosed with scleroderma at age 15 which left me with major joint and muscle involvement. (All antibodies are now negative). However, I led a pretty normal life. Wasn’t a big exerciser, had what I believed to be a pretty healthy, clean diet. Actually got back on a horse again at age 60, first time since age 15. But in the last few years I’ve been dealing with major gut issues, MC and inflammation in the epithelial lining of my colon, lost over 20% of my body weight and I did t have much to spare. Currently I have sarcopenia, osteoporosis (not treated with pharma), scoliosis, arthritis, insulin resistance, and the beginnings of atherosclerosis. I’ve also had mold exposure. I just don’t know where to start in terms of exercise and diet. I want to get my protein intake up to what Dr Lyons recommends but am concerned it may increase the gut inflammation. It’s fascinating listening to this interview. I’m going to start tomorrow. At this age I know what the outcome will be if I don’t. Thank you.

Thank you Dr Nolte for doing this interview with Dr Gabriel Lyons!! I learned several new things about muscle mass. Just found your channel & subscribed to it. Last year I started having Vertebral Compression Fractures. As of now, I have 10 fractures & most of them are not healing. So I developed Sarcopenia. I’m 63 yrs old & have a rare autoimmune liver disease. [AIH]. So I’m hoping with the info I got about building muscle mass, I can slowly build my muscle mass back up. Just wanted to thank you for all you do to help people like me that don’t know if the advice you’re getting is correct up

Nope. She said to eat 1/3 pound of meat at each of three (or more) meals. 5 ounces of 80/20 ground beef contains 36g of amino acids (protein) and 2.8g of Leucine. She also recommended eating 1g of protein per pound of ideal body weight. So if you went carnivore and only ate 80/20 ground beef, you would need to eat 23 ounces a day instead (or more if you are aged.) Since few will eat only meat, one needs to learn the nutrient content of other protein sources (through Cronometer for example) and exchange them. Intermittent Fasting is a tool to lower Insulin levels and raise ketones which also helps reduce hunger. It is very useful for weight loss and correcting Insulin Resistance. However, it is not as beneficial for adding or maintaining muscle mass. These techniques need to be adjusted with changing circumstances and goals.
@KenJackson_US
@KenJackson_US 2 жыл бұрын
@@bidnow2946: _"So if you went carnivore ..."_ I'm not doing carnivore. I'm skeptical. Dr.Lustig and many other doctors stress the absolute importance of fiber, but carnivore seems to fly in the face of that. However, I have since increased my daily meat intake to 0.4 lb, which is 6.4 oz. That's _more_ than 1 gram per pound for me.
@bidnow2946
@bidnow2946 2 жыл бұрын
@@KenJackson_US Nope. The suggestion is for 1g of protein, not 1g of meat. 6.4 oz of 80/20 ground beef contains 46g of protein.

19 ounces of 80/20 ground beef provides your suggested 135g of protein per day. That is only 1370 kcal, but few will eat only meat. Leaner cuts of meat including jerky or protein shakes may help. I'd suggest Keto chow instead of Ensure for anyone wishing to try that.

I'm a bit similar. 5'7", 147 at 65yr. I'll share the following for your consideration. I do high intensity exercise with blood flow restriction bands (B Strong) 4-5 times per week. I average about 123-125gr protein per day. Mostly with 2 meals and a home made whey protein drink with bone broth. The drink is about 25gr protein. Is I need more I up the quantities. 4-6 eggs is 24-48 gr protein depending on size of eggs (I think of it as extra large 5 eggs=35 gr. So 60gr right there. Then an oz of cheese is another 7. The meat at 6-8 oz is another 35-65 gr protein depending on the type. Thus I am at minimum of 102 gr protein. Add in some jerky, a protein bar, nuts, veggies, etc and I reach the average with daily variation of up to 60 grams. I eat in a window, averaged over a year of 6-7 hours. Net carbs average less than 45gr. I've done this for almost 3 yrs and put on 10 lbs, of mainly lean muscle. I keep adapting, keep learning, and keep hearing about how we older people need more protein. I'm also well aware of the changes the body goes through and that each body is a little different.

In our opinion it's a good, better, best scenario. Wild caught > farmed > no salmon. If one has a big issue with the farmed salmon, they could get EPH and DHA other ways, with whole food being preferred so other fatty fishes or green algae.

I am surprised about farmed salmon too. The food they feed farmed salmon is an issue. An even bigger issue is the unfiltered water - the pollution of the water they are in their own waste.

Youd have to mix plant sources to get ideal protein amounts from them, just pick high protein plant sources and youll likely be fine.
