This was so helpful! I’ve only just started selling my crochet this year and pricing has been something I’ve been trying to work out, I really appreciate you sharing this information ☺️

Generally, people can charge whatever they want. If luxury brands charged only for cost of materials, you wouldn't have expensive cars/laptops/watches etc. So in that sense, generally I feel like how much it costs you to make something doesn't technically matter. That said, I'd still recommend calculating how much it costs you to make something anyways just to make sure you're AT LEAST breaking even. After that, you can add however much profit margin you feel is right for you (e.g. what you feel comfortable with, or what kind of income your target market has, how much a typical customer is willing to spend, how strong your brand and reputation are, how much your competitors are charging for the same thing, etc.)

Yes! This! I try to at least figure out my break even point & then if people want to haggle a bit I don't feel pressured to bring it down too much

Fully agree! I think most people don't even break even with a lot of their plushie prices unfortunately

@@crochetmezaddyI think you are so right. I watch sooo many “market prep’ videos and the hours, days, weeks, that go into prepping and then I see people say for instance, “this plushie dinosaur took me 3 hours to make and my yarn cost me x amount and I am charging $25” and I am thinking, ok, even if you had zero cost because someone donated all of the supplies, which they didn’t, then you are still only making $8.33 an hour. So for anyone who is not working a regular “pay the bills” job and is only doing sales and charging like that, I have no idea how they make ends meet?!!? My thought is they are doing no something else that makes it worth while such as selling their own patterns which once you sell enough copies to reimburse yourself for the time it took to design and the yarn it took to test it, then it is all profit. Also wanted to tell you there is a software out there designed specifically for crafters. You can enter something like “safety eyes, 10mm, 10 pairs, $4.67” and it will calculate per eye. Then blue premier yarn. 1 skein, 150g, $11.99. It will tell you the cost per gram of yarn; same thing with stuffing. So then when you make an item you weigh the item made and put in the materials and the weight and the number of eye and it calculates your cost. You tell it how much you want to make per hour and what % of profit you want to make and the enter the amount you out in your time it takes to make the plushie. It will utilize all of the input you gave it and calculate the exact cost to you AND will give you retail prices including a profit margin. It will also a t as your inventory tracker, will tally you when you are low on inventory (you set parameters for that too) it tracks all of it. It’s pretty cost effective too and it’s time consuming to set up but not when you repeat purchase! Anywho. Any crafter could usw something like that to keep track of all your needs and know when they are undercharging.

Ok I'm on a zaddy video binge while crocheting for the first time.i had some seriously uncouth opinions about crochet until recently. I bought that all in one granny square yarn and don't care about color bleeding. I sat in a chair by my front window, pup in my lap, and crocheted 7 squares today. Thanks so much for existing. 👍 🎉❤.

thank you for reminding me to price my products for what they're worth 😫 i've been hesitant to continue raising prices as i continue to do more in-person events but i'm becoming more and more confident in the quality of my plushies - i know they're worth it, and customers clearly think so too :')

Very good video thank you! I discovered your channel after watching the live with Kelsie! My question: are the prices the same if you would sell the plushie online? The overhead is lower? I mean you don't have to go to a ln event, set up a table and sell ...
@crochetmezaddy
@crochetmezaddy Ай бұрын
Yup! Probably cheaper online - I'd say that if you're selling online, you would need to consider things like shipping (if included in the plushie price), packaging, website fees etc as overheads, and then potentially anything like customisation if it's a custom design

Thank you for the video! I want to live out of crochet and I'm really underpaying myself so far 😪 with about 10$ an hour and not much profit margin... and yet I hear people say some of my prices are expensive 😵‍💫. So can I ask how do you sell your creations on markets with your prices? 🤭 I find it hard because often on markets there are some other crochet creations that people do as a hobby, and their prices are lower than mine 😔
@crochetmezaddy
@crochetmezaddy Ай бұрын
In my experience that right customer will come along and pay the right prices - my last market I had someone come and buy from me purely because I had put my plushies at a correct price. I'd say give it a try and if it's not working out - maybe try a different tactic, like maybe bundle deals etc.

@@crochetmezaddy Thank you for your answer! I've had custumers like that, but only one or two on each markets, it's still not profitable enough 🤷‍♀
