Another commercially available product mystery: Oil of Olay is called Oil of Olaz in Germany. Has that name change maybe occurred only due to a typo, since the positions of the letters y and z are switched around on the German and English language keyboard layouts?

Glad to know I pronounce Lidl and Ikea correctly (hahaha) I'm from Spain. For the way they are written is similar to "a spanish pronounciation" let's say. But still there are few people who say "Li" or "Lid" Thanks to Lidl commercials, more people say it correctly nowadays.

Ahh the way I pronounced it it's "lidel" = lidl! Btw I'm from America and there's two lidl store the first one just reopen and the other one is opening soon!! I'd like to go inside once the new one is opening and look around since im interested with German pastry 😋 and I'm also been to Aldi once!! So my question is, does lidl also sell grocery items 90% are German??

I love your pronunciation videos Jen! I know some people get precious about the way THEY pronounce words, but you are explaining how the words were originally pronounced. To me it's courtesy to at least try and say names as their owners say them, even if you don't get it perfectly right, and your videos help me do that. Can you do more please 😎

we have one being constructed across the street from me in New Jersey USA and I had no idea to pronounce it... even as a native English speaker I was even thinking "Lye-Dill" which is so stupid ^_^. Pronouncing it like "Liddle", close to "Little" makes a lot more sense.

I pronounce it the same way as in German. Same with Aldi too. But then, I speak both German and English (neither my mother tongue). Over here, all the TV ads for Lidl pronounce it "Leedl", roughly the Eng. transcription of the German pronunciation (would be Lídl in my mother tongue, note the accent). Not surprised the "Liddl" pronunciation might be more favoured for English puns and pun-based slogans. :-p P.S. Nice furniture ! Seems you're sprucing up the house well.

Hiya. How can anybody be annoyed at being told the correct German pronunciation of the name of a German store by a German?! Unbelievable! As for the way Lidl is pronounced in the ads (and you obviously already know this), it's a deliberate play on the English word 'little'. All the best to you.

How to you pronounce Schadenfreude?
@ZemplinTemplar
@ZemplinTemplar 4 жыл бұрын
Shaadenfroyde. The "a" not only sounds pronounced slightly longer, it's also pronounced more like the "a" in the English world "far", rather than the "a" in the word "shadow". The "-den-" bit is pronounced the same as the word "den" (i.e. lair, burrow) in English, and the "-froy-" bit rhymes with the name Roy. The "-de" at the end sounds the same as the "de" in the English "den". Schadenfreude literally means "bad luck joy" (i.e. "you're amused by someone's bad luck"). Hope that answered the question !

It is cute, the disclaimer you give. I would like to hear the pronunciation repeated , perhaps ten times with 2 seconds between. It is harder to brain capture the pronunciation when an explanation follows immediately. It is harder to 'brain' the word amongst so many other words. Thank you for your video.

The correct pronunciation of 'Lidl" cannot be dictated by the company Lidl. Instead, it is determined by the dialectic speech rules and pronunciation patterns that already exist in the country prior to Lidl's arrival. Which means that if the company insists that others use the German pronunciation of 'Lidl' in England, they would be insisting that people pronounce their name INCORRECTLY.
