This video is to help someone get ideas on how to tow their Subaru with a 2 wheel dolly.
This video could also apply to other AWD or even 4WD vehicles.

Make sure your steering wheel is secure/locked. A good back up to this is wrapping the seat belt around the bottom of the steering wheel twice and clicking it in.

Easy way instead of rolling the car forward is to place chucks or planks of wood 4x4 about a foot long behind front wheels, or use axle stands get in the car put in N and you can turn it by hand then Park and hand brake or emergency break. then you can get to the others. Saves the guess work. The drive shaft pushes in to the transmission then out if you wish to completly remove it so the plastic wire ties do not burn out. These are o.k. for a shot distance. Because it is All Wheel Drive you can drive it on using the front wheels only. To put drive chaft back on push into transmission turn untill it slides up then pull back to the diff and bolt it to gether.

If you put the FWD fuse in, I wonder if you could drive them onto the ramps...... would the drive shaft roll around??? Hmmmm. Got me wondering now. @@bruceyyyyy Thanks. I wanted to know a few things about 3.6L/5EAT 4th gen outbacks and the awd system they used. I am looking to buy one. 1) Is the VTD (planetary) system any worse off-road? It appears to me to function more like old-school (Torsen) quattro, i.e. all 4 wheels want to go all the time, and like the VCD or traction control (whatever subaru calls the system that brakes spinning wheels) is slower to respond and less effective than with the MPT (multi-plate clutch) / CVT systems, allowing more power to be put down, and more wheel spin, and more fun, but less effectively transferring torque in off-camber situations. Is this the case? This is based on videos and observation from limited driving - I haven't owned one, so I don't have first hand experience. 2) Anything to be aware of for 4th gen 3.6 outback relability issues? I have heard the 3.6 has fewer issues than the 2.5, and for this gen head gasket thickness has been fixed, but engines tend to overheat due to cooling issue and so head gaskets still end up leaking, but due to bent rods, not faulty gaskets, which may result in part from CO entering coolant b/c of oil consumption, as these engines, I have heard, also start drinking oil. 3) in particular, how often should tranny fluid be changed? Suby recommends inspecting every 30K, i think, but doesn't say a change is required. I assume more frequent changes are better, some cars I have looked at show tranny flushes done at places other than subaru dealers in the history. Is the flush a bad idea, as opposed to the drain and fill? How about just letting the car run so the tranny pump moves the fluid, rather than using a pressurized device to move the fluid (a middle ground approach, I guess)? Does it matter if non-subaru brand (but otherwise compatible spec) fluid was used, like at a meineke or valvoline? 4) Can you reasonably swap a VTD system and geared auto tranny into a current (6th) gen outback? Will the x-modes be compatible? If so, I might consider buying a new gen and modding it in future.
@Abbbb225
@Abbbb225 3 жыл бұрын
Ps the reason I am looking at this gen is b/c I like the more analog feeling, 50/50ish to rear-bias AWD system, and I'm not a fan of CVT's ito of a fun or organic driving experience.
@bruceyyyyy
@bruceyyyyy 3 жыл бұрын
@@Abbbb225 1) I would say the VTD is better off road. It's more robust with less work on the system. My friends at Power of Your Brains tested and seemed to agree. 2) They'll burn oil at high mileage but all Subaru will. Headgaskets can creep up but usually not until it's 15+ years old. 3) If off roading I would change fluid every 25-50k minimum. 4) Never been done before. I'm working on a VTD swap for my TR690 because I've been really happy with it. 5) Dunno. I've driven a 5EAT XT (It's shown in a couple videos) and honestly if you want a drivers car it ain't it. The owner got rid of the car because it was so problematic.
@Abbbb225
@Abbbb225 3 жыл бұрын
@@bruceyyyyy Thanks Bruce (I assume that's your name). 1) So you don't notice less brake intervention to stop wheelspin with VTD? When you say more robust, you mean ito of longevity, or ito of putting power down (I.e .hill climbs)? 5) I was talking about the 4th gen outback (2010-2014) which only came, to my knowledge, with the 5EAT with the 3.6R engine. I drove it, and wouldn't call it a sports car, but liked the feel more than the next gen with the CVT's. Any thoughts on this setup?
