How to Properly Wind a Mechanical Watch

Winding a mechanical watch is simple. Follow this step-by-step to fully power your watch without damaging it.
1. Push in the crown. Unscrew any screw-down crowns if your watch has one.
2. Rotate the crown clockwise ~20-40 full rotations, until you start to feel the crown tightening. If you have an automatic watch, it won't get tighter, and you can't overwind it.
3. Your watch is now wound!

Can I just add that getting to a full wind on a manual watch, at least from my experience, feels like hitting a wall. At least that's how it feels to me. easy to wind, then suddenly stops in it's tracks.

@@3rdview_ If you're trying to wind the watch and it's "pushing back" without the crown turning, don't force it. Chances are the watch is already fully-wound, but needs to be cleaned and oiled to run. There could be other issues, but usually it's just that the watch hasn't had a service in many, many years.

6 to 8 rotations of the crown is enough depending on the movement to fully wind some watches. You want to avoid overbanking a manual watch.
@k-ozdragon

That's automatic watches only. A fresh wind on a fully powered down watch is typically 25-30 winds. A full wind every 24hr is typically 17-20 winds. Automatic watches wind automatically, as the name suggests. So you just have to get them started running, and then wear the watch so the auto function can wind it.

It's not enough if you fully wind it and you just put it back in the box and don't wear it throughout the day. It will stop overnight.

40 full rotations may suit a watch with a massive mainspring but would be overkill for most. Mechanical sense works best. Automatics are rarely designed to be fully handwound. A few rotations is enough and will protect the mechanicals. Let the rotor do the work and adjust later. Also dont use quickset date function between 9pm and 3am.

If its a non-automatic screw-down crown, wouldn't you also need to account for the rotations needed to fully screw down the crown?
@mbcommandnerd
@mbcommandnerd 3 ай бұрын
I’m pretty sure the crown disengages when you start to screw it in; that way, you’ll never have to worry about accidentally overwinding it. I’m no expert though, so I could be wrong about that. Google it if you need to.
@k-ozdragon
@k-ozdragon 3 ай бұрын
@@mbcommandnerd The crown actually tightens going counter-clockwise. So when you turn it forward to wind it, it unscrews and begins winding the watch. Since the watch doesn't wind going counter-clockwise, you simply turn the crown that direction when done to tighten it.

Good afternoon, I'm off topic but I need help. My bride gave me a watch from the 70s “Tian Harlan corhmachron ” ,the head only rotates counterclockwise, is this normal? Or should I apply force and rotate clockwise? I'm afraid I'll spoil it because it's a wedding gift, it means a lot to me.
@ChronometerCheck

I'm unfamiliar with that specific model, but if it's a manual wind watch, it's usually wound clockwise, however, there are some exceptions. Don't apply force to it - that will likely damage it

Question. When you hack a mechanical watch will that stop the main spring to unwind as well? 🎉
@k-ozdragon
@k-ozdragon 3 ай бұрын
When you hack a watch, the escapement stops turning. Which means the spring also stops winding down. The only way to let down the spring is to let it run, or to open up the watch and manually release the safety system (not recommended).

Never buy a mechanical watch (non automatic) unless you are an expert or so. I was passed on my uncle’s old mechanical watch. Wanted to hold on to it. Tried to restore and then there were floods in my house. It happened at night. Had to take up the gas cylinder to the 1st floor and clothes and stuff. It was the biggest flood in over twenty years. Watch gone to drains. Had to chuck it. But mechanical watches are expensive to restore. I buy automatic watches along with quartz.
