Simple to follow instructions of what we at BridgeCable.com like to see onsite with our network cabling installation projects. Working with CAT6 new wiring we terminate into patch panels in either racks or posts. Keep the bundle neat and follow the "flow". Keep in mind techs will have their own style but again, keep it neat. Most sites will later add wires or ports to their network. Keeping a nice clean panel means less time the next time and even in troubleshooting down the road.
Love to hear your comments and thoughts, even some examples of videos that might help other new techs. Keep in mind various techs will have different styles of punching down or terminations. The key to any panel is to keep the cabling jacket close to the panel. Also keep the twists in the wiring, newbies will leave the shielded wire with straight pairs coming out. As with any job, our job as cabling techs, is to PROTECT the wiring. This is the backbone of the network. Physical damage for network cabling is easy to avoid when done correct. Ensure it's own pathways in the walls and ceilings. Once in the the walls and server racks then terminate the correct way. Typically on service calls in Philadelphia, PA or other areas around us we first look at the terminations. Very rare we find a broken wire.....just poor terminations. Of course if the building had some work done then that is a whole different matter.
So wrapping this up. Keep a clean and happy patch panel....keep a happy client!

So the patch block that you are punching down into is working similarly to how crimping a RJ-45 connector works right? When you crimp the RJ45, the metal blade connected to the pins cuts through the protective coating of the wire and makes contact with the copper. In this case, the panel has a "blade" in there somewhere that is doing the same, but you are also using the force of the punch down to push it into a pressure-secure hold on the wire. If that makes sense?

Sort of the same....RJ-45 heads and patch panels. The copper in the wire must be "touching". The panel does have "teeth" in the preloaded bays, and pressure from the punch tool scores the cable into a sitting bay. You are right on track....the copper must touch certain points to carry the packets. Low Voltage....CAT6 carrys some volt.....so small but it's there....all those 0 and 1s (binary). :)

TrendNet is okay, just use it on High Impact all the time. Gives a nice solid strong punch! :) Everyone uses different brands.....half our guys Fluke...which I hate....the other half Ideal :)

Can a punchdown block be used on a switch, or does it just attach directly to a server? I'm missing a lot of context from the book I'm reading lol.

How do you remove a wire if you were to somehow punch the wrong color into the wrong slot?

Really simple.....maybe....just pull out and go again. However some punches will have little hooks on them to pull just the wrong wire. Mispunches happen, just pull out and re-do. You do not want to punch into the panel too many times....the teeth get loose and down the road cause errors. Once or twice....re-punch....not a big deal (from a 20+ yr tech's experience). I will mention this......some clients want to REUSE a older panel.......Good Lord....just spend the $40-$150 to start fresh. The time for the labor is more. Thanks for the question! Paul

Hi, just started using patch panel and followed the correct wiring method when punching, but for some reason when I check I can’t get no continuity on the panel...my short jumper shows the right lights ...lm only using eBay cheapo punch tool. Could it be the case? Or the patch panel itself got problem....getting descent click when I press my punch tool by the way and cut the end wire too.

Hmmmm.....if the jumpers are getting passes.....would have to rule them out. Most patch panels even come with a manual cheap single push down jacker. As long as the copper is exposed and you can see the "teeth" sitting the wire in you should be okay. Of course switch ports on the panel....possible bad jack on that one. Tough one to answer without looking at it.

It says to maintain the twist, but you untwisted yours; however, I know that the pairs are still twisted inside the jacket. Is that what you are referring to?

Slight untwist when putting into the panel.........the least is better.

If I have a bunch of Cat 6 cables (like in your vid), and they are all bundled and zip-tied together neatly, which one out of the bundle of cables should be terminated into the 1st port to stop them from tangling and overlapping? Would I be better taking the inner most cable and terminating that into the first port or would it be better to do that one last? I hope my question makes sense...?

Punching down is an "art"....that is what I see all the time. In what you describe I would punch down the 1st port and then work my way down the row. Do not secure it until you are done, I leave enough to service any ports if I need to. Then Velcro it in......everyone frowns on it.....but if you are going to use wire ties loosely apply them...don't "clamp down" on them. Hope this helps!

Hmmm.....that was awhile back but I would guess ICC? If I had a choice to buy the panels I go with them many times. Great to hold the wiring in place before punching down! 2nd runner up would be Cable Matters, directly from Amazon.

Thanks for asking....B. Very rare we will use A. Some older sites that we are new vendors we will match the existing punches. Every once in a blue moon we will come in to a new site and jack some new wires....then the fail or the pairs are wrong....then we march into the patch panel and see A :) So rule of thumb.....B. :)

@@BridgeCable please i need a little help. I had a RJ45 jack terminated. All pins from 1 to 8 read on LAN tester. But when I connect computer it does not blink or connect. What could be the problem.

I use magnifying glasses to quickly visually verify a good punch. BTW the spec is typically 1.5-2 twists per cm in Cat-5(e) and 2+ twists per cm in Cat-6, right up to the punch. This example fails to show that.

Best way to punch down that patch panel? Throw it away and get a keystone :D. Good luck changing any cable later on when everything is zip tied and bundled. Plus, if you get one like this (www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Mount-24-Port-Keystone/dp/B0072JVT02/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=keystone+patch+panel&qid=1622871672&sr=8-4) then you can cable tie each individual cable to the back zone for extra security, versus just having a big clump of wires in the back. Oh, and don't forget you can get all kinds of keystones too, not just 8p8c/rj45. You can get fiber, hdmi, audio, rg6/coax, and on and on. WAY WAY WAY better imo. I guess there's a little bit more cost to it because you've got to buy a bag of 24 keystone jacks but if 30 bucks is a deal breaker then it sounds like doing it right isn't a priority. Also, I've snapped the teeth before when punching them down. What do you do with this type of panel? Nothing, you've just got a dead port. With a keystone you just throw it out and snap a new one in.

We work on all types of panels. However...on a fresh install we are dropping in Keystone panels! Unsure if this a real comment or just an ad....I can go on...but love any panels :)

Hello, one strange scenario. Cables from one side ends to a Patch panel cat6 and on the other side are rj45 connectors. Using the tester, all pins are ok but when connecting with computer, again everything works but some links are 100mbits and some other 1gbs. What can be the issue?

Newer patch panels will likely have RJ45 ports on the back. Is that what you mean?

You can now get “unloaded” panels, which just have holes. You terminate an RJ45 jack and then just pop it in one of the panel holes.

I think he meant that the more you strain the cables (moving them around every time you terminate a new one) the more likely you will pull some of the wiring loose

terrible training video. next time zoom in on the color codes. dome panels all the wires are on top some on bottome and like yours split between top and bottom.

Sorry you feel that way Don. The point was the flow of the cabling and the ease of flipping the panel around for ease of punching. I get a ton of comments online and real world about that trick. Color codes....everyone has that online.
