When you're shifting in this video, do you just drop the clutch or do you feather it for a split second? I'm trying to perfect my shifting and I'm having issues with high RPM shifting. I'm afraid to just drop the clutch but if I hold it for a second it feels rough, like I'm burning up my clutch between shifts. It also doesn't help that I live in Colorado so I have steep hills everywhere I go. High RPM shifting is becoming a necessity... Any advice would be appreciated! I drive a 5 speed 2014 Civic EX.
@NUNIS0123
@NUNIS0123 6 жыл бұрын
TwisTed Taipan don't feather the clutch when you are shifting whether it's downshift or upshift just drop it and shift into the next gear. Feathering the clutch will burn it, the only thing that you should be feathering is your brakes or accelerator pedal.
@joshuafox2216
@joshuafox2216 6 жыл бұрын
Release the clutch to the friction point after shifting, then release completely. It takes time, but this process becomes faster as you do it more. Makes it nice and smooth while normal driving. For High RPM driving, just dump the clutch. You'll be fine.

zerotohundred cool, was asking because i just got my car a few days ago and sometimes when i do highway pulls idk if i should just let off the clutch quickly or ? I notice a little smell when i did one pull, does that mean i let off the clutch too slow? Ive been told i can just let go of the clutch if rpms are high.
@zerotohundred
@zerotohundred 6 жыл бұрын
PR1NCETD0T, chances are you might have scrubbed the clutch due to improper release of the clutch pedal. But on the topic of quick shifts, it depends how comfortable you are with your hand and leg work. Now if you're driving casually, your shifts are more relaxed. But if you're going for quicker shifts then you need to remember that every step will need to be faster, this includes the leg work. In fact it's all in the legs. A good way to learn is to gradually increase your shifting speed until you can do it fast, then once you're comfortable, keep tuning your moves to be even quicker thereafter.

Double clutching is done while up shifting and down shifting in vehicles without synchronized manual transmission. However the technique can be also advantageous in vehicles with "sychros" for smoothly downshifting in order to accelerate, and when done correctly it prevents wear on the "synchros".

@zerotohundred
@zerotohundred 7 жыл бұрын
+Seven Hrtz its true there are many pedal variations and each require a certain change in feet movemens. Although in the video, he's not actually sliding bottom up but nudging the gas pedal. Slide on the brake pedal yes but ultimately in any pedal configuration, it's very much dependant on how you would nudge/jab the gas pedal. Some like the floor mounted gas pedal like this video takes less effort, while the top downs would require a little more lifting / raising of the heel to reach the gas, thanks for watching!

Hey man, a quick question. I just started going for Touge, so will I skid off the track if I downshift without doing the H&T or get my wheels locked during corners ?
@zerotohundred
@zerotohundred 7 жыл бұрын
Well to be honest locking the wheels depend on how intense you are with your footwork without H&T. You can cheat by modulating the release of the clutch pedal during downshifts. Many race drivers may not master H&T but are still able to cope this way.
@zerotohundred
@zerotohundred 7 жыл бұрын
Try releasing the clutch pedal as much as the engine would allow. As the clutch pedal is released, the car will begin to brake in accordance to engine speed. So the rate of release will determine the harshness.

alright man, thanks for the tips. I skidded off track once, made a mistake by tapping the brakes while cornering haha

And one more, it does cause damage when you downshift constantly while driving at a certain speed right?
@zerotohundred

+Faker Jr. Well, just as long as the RPMs doesn't exceed the red line, your engine will be fine. As for the clutch, there will definitely be accelerated wear on the pads without the application of H&T

Hi Tom, I've been watching your channel for some time and of course practicing my own driving after being inspired by your amazing videos. One thing I've noticed besides your flawless downshifts is how fast you up shifts, what is the technique behind being able to shift that fast without the car jerking? I know the old say slow is smooth, smooth is fast but there seems like some technique behind being able to upshift and it doesn't feel like you let the revs drop too much before the gear engages. Please help me out brother! Thanks :)
@zerotohundred

While shift movement is crucial, the trick is all in the legs. No matter how quick the hand is, things doesn't get moving until the footwork is done. If you think you're not shifting quick enough, chances are you might be splitting the steps where you clutch in first, then start to shift and when the gear enters, you release the clutch. Try to do it all at once. Antiticaption is key but don't let that slow your learning. Secondly, clutch pedal travel. There is only a useable amount of clutch pedal travel in every manual car. You need not use the entire pedal travel. Find the bite / release point by engaging a gear at standstill then release the clutch to determine where it bites and releases. This step is also important to know where your pedal dead zone is (the empty part that doesn't do anything before the clutch actually moves). Once you do that, work within the sweet spot and you will waste less time and have less free-play between shifts. Thirdly, you want to prime the clutch pedal before every shift by gently pressing it to by pass the dead zone so just as you're about to shift, the clutch ready to disengage. Hope this helps to improve your shifts, please post your findings here to develop your skills further alright

But the brake modulation seems affected. A nice technical solution imo would be to use a clutch actuator with a button on the shifter. This way you can use left foot braking as well .

It's not perfect, it's a servo-clutch, and it becomes a radically different experience than using the pedal (mechanical actuation and feedback, even if coupled to some electronic sensing meanwhile), I've used that system because it's included in our most recent tractor (Landini Rex 4, like the ones you can see in this video, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/prJiZ9xjq6imeXU.html ) and I guess is commonplace in other brands and models, it's an assistance when you need to use both feet to brake asimetrically, or when you don't feel like using your foot because you're also using the hand throttle (and that's because the work you're doing calls for it), it has adjustment integrated for both engagement and release sensitivity, but I haven't managed to find a release preset (out of 6 levels, from the most sudden to the most progressive) that I like for when I'm driving it at top-speed (the most car-like experience you can expect when using it thru the day), I always resort to clutch as usual, like I've been doing for years while driving a car... But I don't disagree with your initial idea. Just telling you that it's a nightmare from an engineering, maintenance and implementation standpoint. The most precise clutching I've experienced is the one mechanically actuated.

Damn that's quick. Is this a cable throttle? I have a wire throttle on my FN2 and there is a delay after blipping pedal. I also can't get the positioning right, I thought it'd be easy in these cars!
@zerotohundred
@zerotohundred 6 жыл бұрын
+Chris Loftus its drive by wire in the fd2r. *edited just read you have cable in your FN. Cable works just as well or better in fact, plus all cars used to run cable anyways. Just need to accommodate the said delay by adjusting timing and / or blip rate and you should be able to do the same Please provide a scenario in which you have most issue with and I'll try to help you out

zerotohundred I thought EP3 K20 is cable. Yeah I need to practice more when the car is not moving. I can time it right when just doing a normal rev match without brake. The position that I place my heel when driving needs to change slightly to heel and toe, which is difficult when I’ve had it in that position for 8+ years.
@zerotohundred
@zerotohundred 6 жыл бұрын
Chris Loftus can't really get anywhere without the car moving to be honest since it relates to actual braking. If you're doing rev match right, then you might want to try putting less toes on the brake pedal to ease modulation, therefore give you more leverage for blipping. That will be best for on road application.
