After refilling, I run it to operating temp then park it nose down on a good slope in my driveway (or jack up the rear). Let it cool and any air will collect in the expansion tank. Refill it and fill the overflow to max and it will self-bleed after that.

Looks like an economical variation of the "Libby bong" method. I would suggest repeating this after a drive cycle or two at normal operating temp. with heater valves open to purge any air that may be in the engine block and/or heater cores.

looks pretty smart to me. But im not sure i get the point. wouldnt an air bubble in some corner keep sitting there only being compressed. the bubble needs to flow to the bleeder to be able to air i would think. what am im missing here
@Endfloat

The air makes its way to the highest point in the system eventually and this method provides the pressure to expel it. You will get some air bubbles in the system but the moving water will eventually carry it to the radiator.
@type2523
@type2523 3 жыл бұрын
You lift the top of the van because there are some high spots on the pipes which trap air . After bleeding mine normally ( no bubbles came out of the bleed screw ) I decided to lift it up ( the engine was shut ) and I could clearly hear bubbles coming up (which came out through the radiator)
@Endfloat
@Endfloat 3 жыл бұрын
If you drive it a bit, they'll make their way to the radiator eventually but by using my method you'll have removed enough air to be able to drive it without worrying about it overheating badly.

Hi, Sorry. This question is nothing to do with this video but I’m stuck and your answers are so succinct. Hi, I’ve got a loose fan belt but can’t Move the alternator enough to tighten it as the alternator seems to be sitting on the bracket. Any leverage moves the other parts rather than the alternator itself. I’m puzzled. Any ideas? Thanks
@Endfloat
@Endfloat 4 жыл бұрын
I find it hard to picture what you mean to be honest. It may be a case that you have an alternator belt that's too long and you're at your limit of adjustment. Otherwise maybe your alternator is installed incorrectly somehow, or you need to loosen the bolt that the alternator pivots on slightly. Are you sure you're moving the alternator in the right direction to tighten it, cause it moves the opposite way to what you might think. Without seeing it, it's hard to know though.

Sorry another Q ... can this technique be used to cold fill up completely or partially empty system? As opposed to just getting some air out? I live alone and there never anyone around to 'man' the radiator bleed valve whilst filling traditional way with revs at 2-2.5k. Thanks!

I fill it as far as I can using the "traditional" method, then get the last of the air out using this method.

...and one year later .... After an engine swap earlier this year, replaced one tdi with another, I’m having a bastard of a jog bleeding my system. No hot air from the heater at all where previously it would have you driving in your underware. I’m gonna steal and adapt your idea and use the passatt header tank with a bolt in Schröder valve and make a separate filling tank with another valve and an old tyre compressor attachment. I’ll let you know how I get on. If it works, I’ll send you a video short of it in action.

You shouldn't need to go to all that hassle to get the system to work properly. I'm using the stock coolant system for the T3 without any mods. I'd be looking for problems in the stock system before modifying anything.

Great video! I heard you recommend g12. My shop has always put green coolant in my system. Once after upgrading my radiator and coolant lines on the entire van, and once again after replacing my cylinder head. They said that coolant is fine and that's what they use in everything and the specialized coolant is overkill. What is your recommendation on this? I'm running a 1.9 AAZ turbo diesel.
@dakotasilvers9117

I've also been having issues with coolant blowing out of my overflow tank behind the license plate. After feeling that several of those blue plastic caps were failing my shop decided to replace the expansion tank with the metal one from Van Cafe that uses a standard type radiator cap. Even after this swap coolant is blowing out of the overflow tank and is now leaking at the silicone connectors in the joint of the aluminum coolant pipes in the middle of the van, and I just noticed coolant leaking all over my spare tire from somewhere up above it. My temperature gauge never goes above halfway so it's not overheating but somehow is pressurizing and blowing coolant out of everywhere. Do you know what might be causing this I'm stumped and this is my daily driver so I'm really stressed out about getting this fixed especially because I just replaced the cylinder head.

Noob question, after putting pressure on the expansion tank with the pump, and bleeding it via the radiator, what happens when you then need to remove the valve pipe and connect the expansion tank to the filler tank? Would that make the pressure drop and let air in the system ?
@Endfloat
@Endfloat 4 жыл бұрын
No because you're pushing the air out at the other end where it gets trapped by using the air pressure in the tank. You need to close the bleed screw before you open the expansion tank cap though.

Great idea mate! But may I ask .... the system is already pressurised once up to temp and thermostat open, at which point you just bleed any air out of the rad. Apart from having to negotiate a little hot coolant, what are the advantages of your schrader valve hack? (Good hack!)
@Endfloat
@Endfloat 4 жыл бұрын
You're pushing the water down at the header tank end and as a result, up at the radiator end, expelling the air because there's a pressure differential between the 2 ends of the system This doesn't happen when the system is pressurised through normal operation. Also, you can do this with the engine cold.

To tell you the truth, I never fully got that bit myself. I think the pressure gets through the pipework for the auxiliary pump, or maybe the thermostat will let a bit through but yes it definitely works.

So you’re filling te system with air to get air out of the system? Doesn’t make sense.. But understanding the pipework has some airtraps you have to deal with by lifting the front does. Do not quit understand why people think the have to outsmart the factory. 🤔
@Endfloat

You're using the air to push the fluid down at one end, giving a positive pressure which will allow you to let the air out at the other end. The air you're putting in doesn't get entrained in the coolant.
