Arc flash gear is necessary until the system is verified dead. Looks like this fella verified the system dead by earthing it. Oof. All it takes is one missed lock and you’re another arc flash horror story.

I guess it would depend on the coatings applied to the vessels...I know most saltwater sea fare worthies get ablative paints to their hulls, which shedding of electrons is how they peel off old dead cells to expose better layers of protection in the paint layers. Depending upon the voltage class we're considering in this conversation and some other factors, I would venture to say that the paint layers constitute some form of insulation. That said, I'm certain no vessel is sealed completely along every single facet of it's structure and ports, etc;. I don't know all the intricacies of those ships though...not certain the practice out there on the water but I would think, just like on land, bonding all of the metal structure to bring to water potential would be the ultimate and to achieve that a 'designated grounding electrode', perhaps something altogether separate from the hull would be the order of the day.

Sf6 not used in ship it liberate hazard gas in closed space mixed with air

SF6 gas itself is not toxic at all yet until it burns and that is super toxic. So whenever there is a S/G explosion, do not enter the switch room unless you are putting on proper respirators. It’s Hazmat zone. Toxicity. FAULTED SF6 GAS - Faulted SF6 gas smells like rotten eggs and can cause nausea and minor irritation of the eyes and upper respiratory tract. Normally, faulted SF6 gas is so foul smelling no one can stand exposure long enough at a concentration high enough to cause permanent damage. It is a potent greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential, and its concentration in the earth atmosphere is rapidly increasing. During its working cycle, SF6 decomposes under electrical stress, forming toxic byproducts that are a health threat for working personnel in the event of exposure.

The room, the engine room, the engine control room and all entry points are watertight.
