Local ordinances may prohibit raising chickens but you can do the next best thing by raising quail inside your garage or in a mudroom. Anywhere that you can raise a parrot or cockatiel, you can raise quail for meat and/or fresh eggs.
In this video, our friend Beth shows you how she raises quail in her garage. Don't let what you can't do limit what you can do. Sometimes you just need to think outside of the box and get a little bit creative. A huge thank you to Beth for sharing her adorable little quails with us.

My cat-children encouraged me to watch this video. They all sat at rapt attention in front of the monitor watching the birds. I'm sure there were no dastardly thoughts in their little cat brains. Positive. Ayup. Little angels, they are.

Thank you! I lost my 20 quail this spring to a smart fox and a weak spot on the hutch. My 1/2 metal cloth was a hoop roof for outside fun and it wasn't nailed to the wooden hutch they slept in but hung on nails so it wouldn't collapse. Didn't the fox jump on this hoop until it slid off the nails and flattened to expose the quail door. He just waited and the quail were not that smart. I've found a source for quail eggs I could hatch and will do it soon. I like them outside where they only start laying eggs in the spring and stop in the fall. If you keep them inside and have 14 hours or more of light, they will lay all year round but I understand this may be hard on them. They are designed by nature to have a break but that depends too. For instance, in the winter they need the "egg energy" just to stay warm, so they stop laying eggs, so inside where it's warm it may not be as important. I do have plans to move them into the basement if the circumstance requires it. It's hard enough with the foxes, Hawks, and Racoons terrorising my Chickens and Quail, but if times were real hard it's the two legged animal I'd have to worry about. And those critters have opposable thumbs! Makes up for the lack of brains I guess. The eggs are lovely and make great bite sized pickled eggs. Three or four quail eggs equal one chicken egg. Depends on the size of the eggs. The cull is a sad day. But it has to be done. You only want one male for a whack of females and I keep an extra male alive as a backup. Kinda like the Kings second son, just the spare eh? There's about 4 grams of red meat and it's all on the breast. Tough as nails and I haven't figured out how to tenderise it besides canning the stuff. But it is a very easy bird to process. The first one is the hardest! AGGHHH!!!! OK good people, have great one and good luck.

It's my understanding from all of the quail raising videos I've watched that you don't want a tall enclosure for quail because they are easily frightened and will try to fly, they fly into the enclosure and don't survive (delicate necks). I follow some quail farmers and they suggest a height of 1 foot for their cage.

You can purchase quail cages with lower head space if this is a concern for you. I would definitely do the short cages if they weren’t going to be socialized. These quail are in our workshop where we run power tools and pound nails almost every day. Because they are exposed to so much activity they are very desensitized to being startled. It’s like anything with the animals, if you acclimate them to human activities they get used to it. We have ducks too and I saw over and over again that their coop was best set apart from the chickens and that they hated ramps. My ducks co-exist with our chickens and use ramps all the time. We haven’t had any issues with the elevated head space and in fact have found that they LOVE being able to jump up and down from the roost and are very keen on hanging over the edge peaking at one another or at us while we work. Hopefully this helps ease your concerns for the welfare of our little feathered friends. I appreciate your sharing this information because perhaps someone else will benefit greatly because their quail will be less socialized and your concerns will be very valid and should be considered in the design of the enclosure 🤗

@@audreywy1743 👍🏻 it’s great that you bring this point up👍🏻. The more educated folks are the better chance they have at success! I had seen the same thing when we where building the enclosure and I initially had them in a much shorter cage but I hated that every time they wanted to flap their wings out they where hindered by the space. I hopefully will not regret my decision and so far I have been happy with the larger space. Time will tell😉🤗. I appreciate your input and encouraging people to do their homework. It’s a very valid point and consideration! ❤️

100% yes! They are a far better option for meat and eggs!!! These little guys came into our possession because they were not being purchased at the feed store and needed a home or they where going to be put down. I had been toying with venturing into raising quail but hadn’t committed to anything until I found that these guys needed a home. I have really enjoyed them and I see a real opportunity for people who live in a city and can’t have chickens. I would probably have chosen coturnix but that’s not who needed a home on that day😉. One small benefit to the bobwhites is they are more prone to set their own eggs and they live a bit longer. Beyond that the coturnix outshine the wild varieties hands down.👍🏻 I’m glad you are spotlighting the coturnix because if eggs are your goal that would be a wiser choice ❤️

@bearrivermama6414

I think so! I have read that coturnix quail only need 1 sq ft per bird for space. The folks that raise them with less socialization say it is best to have short cages (1 foot tall) because they spook easily and try and fly, but ours are very used to interaction and are not easily frightened. Im usually more inclined to give more space if we can. I figure give them the happiest place possible and they will be less inclined to peck and fight ☺️ I have seen people use rabbit cages as well👍🏻 They are very enjoyable birds to raise. We have fallen in love with them!! We had one with pasty bum as a chick that I had to tend to for a month before it cleared up but other than that, they are very easy to care for.❤️

I loved being on vacation and watching wild quail. I wonder what the egg production is, and if the eggs taste like chicken eggs?
@bearrivermama6414
@bearrivermama6414 Жыл бұрын
Depending on what type of quail you have egg production ranges from an egg a day to one every couple of days per hen. The have a stronger flavor than a chicken egg. Not a lot but some people comment about it. The yolk to white ratio is more. If you want to investigate raising quail for egg production I would recommend looking into the coturnix quail. They are better layers, their eggs are larger and the birds need less space than the bobwhites we adopted.👍🏻

Thank you for sharing. We currently live in a 5th wheel rv. I have wanted chickens, but not able to have them until we buy land. I am so excited to do quail in our rv. We have huge windows in our main area, plus we have a big window over the dresser area in the bedroom. We don't watch TV so it's a perfect place for the quail. I just found this today, so will research and hopefully have quail soon. Can you share where to buy them and more about the feed used. Thank you!@

In my experience, cats Really want to instinctively eat little quail chicklets and if one gets out of an enclosure, they’ll make a quick meal of them. Once you get a cat used to being around them for a few months though, as long as you feed it other things, like cat food, the cat learns that the quail aren’t a food source, and after chasing the them off a few times they know you don’t approve of them eating the quail. I’ve had quail escape the pen and live for days before I found Them happily pecking around in my garden, and I’m sure predators would have taken them out without the protection of the cats.

From the very little I have done (and Kylene takes the raw content and does all of the editing and polishing! So what I did was very minimal!) making content is a ton of work!!! I don’t know that I could do what Jonathan and Kylene are doing! I’m not near organized enough and I’m a tech illiterate person too 🤣 I’d have to hire my kids to do the tough stuff! I don’t even own a cellphone! So I’m kinda behind in the curve 😉

These birds where a rescue. I happened upon them as chicks who needed a home. We are not yet sure of their gender but I have a secondary coop ready to separate them if needed. We where at the feed store and they had these little guys and a couple chuckers that needed a home asap. We took them in and are learning as we go. If we hadn’t taken them they were set to be put down. Sooooo here we are, quail parents 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t regret the decision. But yes, we have made a space in preparation for potential issues in their coming of age. We have learned this from our adventures in raising chickens and ducks. We have had to separate aggressive males from the flock in the past. The other option is freezer camp 😵🫣 and I haven’t been able to venture that road yet. Even though we hunt it’s different with the domestic critters.
