I run through sealing a Massey Ferguson 240 hydrostatic steering cylinder.
I do try and help with technical advise at bundybearsshed@gmail.com if you have a question or are having trouble with your project.

Im in ireland and have what is a rare tractor here - a mf355. This video is exactly what i need to save me having to buy entire new rams so fingers crossed i can now do it and save myself a couple hundred in the process. Very well put together video with a nice mannerism from the host giving the viewer a calm relaxed - "we can do it" vibe. If more people had this type of knowledge it would both help waste and consumerism , save money and pass on very useful skills which unfortunately are dying out a bit more in every generation. It alao gives someone huge satisfaction and sense of usefulness and confidence when you can fix something with your own hands. So thank you very much - youre helping the world more than you know by making these vids! 🙏💪

Thankyou, that is my aim, to encourage people to try their own repairs, it does seem to work when I can break it down and make it look simple to have a go.

Thank you for doing this video! I have the exact same issue with my Massey 362 and is leaking at the same location. I was unsure how to get the nut off the end of the shaft. Very informative video!

I wanted to thank you for your time in putting these videos together. I have one of these MF240 tractors and just finished replacing a power steering cylinder rod (tie-rod end broke) and resealing the cylinder. I had a bugger of a time getting the o-ring out of the bottom of the cylinder but ended up being able to hook it with a small drill bit and pull it out of its groove. I also resealed my CAV injector pump with the confidence I gained from your video on that. You saved me! Thanks again!

Thanks Lance, with the Teflon seal you can put a hose clamp over it to help shrink back to size, that’s if you have time on your side. I stripped my multi power box using your video as reference and all went well until I decided to take the reverse idler gear off....bloody near shit me self when 56 needle bearings fell into my hand😂. Now I know why you left it in place! Used grease to sit them all back in place, was quite relieved when the pin went back in!

Hello Lance from the Great State of South Carolina. I've learned more In the last couple of weeks from your videos on tractor repairs, than I have a lifetime of tinkering with them. I have changed the fluids, replaced the PTO seal, freed up the right hand leveling arm that was rusted solid. I have now disassembled the front steering cylinder on my MF240 same as the one in your video. I can't seem to get the inner tube out. I saw you take it out with a pair of snap ring pliers. I'm afraid I may scratch the tube wall via that method, any other suggestion would be greatly appreciated. God bless you and keep up the great work. Your calm demeanor gives me the courage to tackle these problems, that usually would be a little intimidating for me to try.

I'v never seen the inside of one of those rams before I have worked on large rams of big machines but the oil was fed direct into both ends of the ram. I enjoyed every moment of your video thank you. In the 70' I drove the 168's 178' and and the 188' here in Ireland their all had loaders on them with a trip bucket. The main problem they had with the steering was that ball on the end of the steering rod always wore and if you got up to between 1500 and 1800 revs in top wear the wheels got into a speed wobble and the wouldn't fix it until the steering rod popped off. Not very funny back then but I sure can laugh now. I never seen how they were fixed perhaps one day if your between videos you might get a chance to explain. Once again thank you I did enjoy the video God Bless stay safe.

Great video, but I want to share a tip that worked for me better than hammering it in @30:38. Just mount it on the tube and twist in one direction as you apply pressure. I did it both methods, but it was quick and less chance of mucking up the plastic/teflon seal.

Great video Lance ! I have a Massey Ferguson 253 that has this exact power steering cylinder on each side of the tractor. Thank you for taking the time to share the video. On the end thread of my cylinder rod, there was Teflon tape slight wrapped around the thread. Do you think that it is necessary to put a few wraps of the tape around the thread or just apply a dab of the blue thread lock to prevent loosening of the piston during operation of the tractor with years of usage? Thanks from Houston, Texas .USA.
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 3 жыл бұрын
Blue thread lock is better than tape any day, no chance of a bit of tape coming loose and getting stuck in the valve.

Hi Lance, I rebuilt the cylinder for my MF240 today, all went well thanks to your video. Do you know somewhere to order some of the internal parts other than the seals??? I need to replace the big washer that spreads the o-ring due to severe corrosion. Any help is thankful. Keep the videos coming, good work.

Hi Bundy bears, I really enjoyed your series of refurbishing a massey 135, We do have a MF 35 1964 with an american power steering option (I am in Canada). On this version, the cylinder is mounted directly on the power steering column. It is leaking big time on our tractor and I would be very interested seeing you service that system if possible. Thanks in advance ! Best regards ! by the way, it's just a suggestion :)

G'day mate pity that ram is that big although the diameter would be alright to fit to my band saw as the winding spring that you can tension for the fall of the blade is useless and I know a few blocks on you Tube have fitted to theirs any way good vid look forward to the next instalment. John

I’m having trouble getting the o-ring seating properly in the cylinder on a 231 MF. Near the bottom of the cylinder there’s a taper. Does the o-ring seat above or below the taper when looking into the cylinder?
