How to set the valve lash or tappets on a Ferguson tractor is something we are often asked about. Here it is a simple way of doing a tricky job.
Here is a link to the Kangaroo Stew where I bought it and got it running.

Good one Lance I can remember the days adjusting the tapers and the distributor, it was great when you didn't have to worry about it it was self adjust and electronic. When you look at the old girl it makes you think how far we have come. In joyed watching the set you made regards John

You can also use the lobes on the distributor shaft as guides. Each time the points begin to open, the next set of valves should be closed and ready for adjustment.

Great video Lance! I was planning on doing mine today on my TEA. Ive had a few issues with snorting and burping coming from the exhaust valves and the noise through the exhaust being very loud, almost drowning out the engine noise and sounding like there's no exhaust on at all. Ive noticed by setting my exhaust clearances from 12thou to 10tho really helped as its a worn engine and parts. I ran like clockwork after that. Im thinking of taking the head off and getting it reconditioned with new valves and springs etc

You may have worn rockers and you can dress them though. I run my petrol 35 at 10 thou and its not a worry if you check them now and then.

Good series of videos. It occurred to me as to whether, particularly with the MF135 series, it would be worth producing a DVD with the entire renovation project on it for people to buy and have it as a workshop guide to follow when working on a tractor renovation. You could even do a copy of the workshop manual so accompany it so people could have a step by step guide to the renovation and the ability to have access to the relevant info as and when they want it without needing internet. Just struck me people may be glad to buy a copy to have in the workshop.

I did look at that but we came to the decision we would leave it on youtube only. We are however offering free workshop manual downloads on my web site under the technical section here. queenslandtractorspares.com.au/technical/

Fair enough. If you thought about it and decided not to thats the decision made. From the laymans position it can be confusing simply reading the manual and translating the info into real life whereas with you demo-ing the steps to follow in your workshop, it suddenly all becomes a lot clearer and more understandable.

Thank you so much before doing that I need now to replace the distributor first in the right position before starting to set all the cylinders. To be sure the distributor is on the right place did u have a vidéo?

As per usual your videos are extremely informative. Got a couple off questions for you. Am I correct in saying once a engine had been rebuilt and had some use its advisable to lift off the rocker cover and go through the valve and head bolt settings again? If this is the case how much do I have to strip in order to do this ie obviously plugs and leads distributor cap anything else?
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 2 жыл бұрын
Just anything needed to check the head nuts and set the tappets. You can probably leave the plugs etc in place.

Lance does the engine spin clockwise when looking from the front toward the back? I thought the pto spins counterclockwise when looking from the front toward the back so assumed the engine was the same.

Hi Lance, videos have been great mate! I recently just bought a TED 20 and have given it half a refurb. I’ve been using it to beach launch my boat. Question is, does the exhaust temp usually get up there when under load? I tow a 1.5 tonne boat and to get back home I tow in 4th gear about 1km. The exhaust seems to be quite hot by the end of this, water temp normal. I’m running 20W 60 and has new distributor (set up as per your video) governor set up as per video, and have put valve shield in the fuel wether this needed I’m unsure. I was just wondering if the tappets might need adjustment or is this normal? It runs fairly well other then that. Also it is quite hard to turn over when cold it’s got a battery with 433CCA which is new. It starts first turn but is quite hard to get it to turn over. New starter motor fitted. Not a huge problem was just wondering if this was normal. On the north coast of NSW so not that cold here. Thanks for any help.

Yes they do get very hot under load. The good thing is that your tractor will probably run well because of it. Setting the tappets from time to time is a good thing even if you are not sure if it needs it. That stops valves riding and burning out so just as a maintenance thing it wont hurt.

Nice job Lance! I am learning buckets from your and I just wanted to say thank you. I should come up with the invention of liquid hair to make it easier to find the hole. 😊🤣 I have a question as well. You sometimes say of a spanner 1/2" AF. What does AF stand for? Thanks for sharing.
@richardl7161
@richardl7161 4 жыл бұрын
AF stands for "across flats"
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 4 жыл бұрын
AF stands for Across Flats.. Spanners stamped with an imperial fraction mean that the spanner or socket is that size in inches across its parallel faces. So a spanner stamped 1/2 is a half inch across its parallel faces. Similar to metric 12mm etc means 12mm across the flats.

On my TEA20 the adjustment screws are level with the top of the lock nuts and I still cannot close the clearance to 10/12 thou. Is it possible to get longer adjustment screws to take up the adjustment. Thanks

there are a few different length push rods so you may have the wrong ones in your machine.

Hi Lance I am a little puzzled when u say the valves are rocking. If both cylinder 1 and 4 are at the top, I assume that all four valves are closed. Right? Therefore, the rocker arms are "free" on all four valves, right? Why can't you then set all four valves at the same time? Maybe I just don't understand what you mean, with the term "rocking". Best regards Karsten, Denmark
@karstenhj
@karstenhj 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm... Maybe I can try to answer my own question :D Ha… When you say rocking, you mean that the inlet- and outlet valves are close to being engaged at the same time. Meaning that the cams are juuuust rubbing on the valves. The "opposite" cylinder is then at firing position meaning that the cams are as far away from the valves as possible. And you want to set the distance at that point, when the cams are as far away from the valves as possible? Best regards Karsten, Denmark
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 4 жыл бұрын
Both pistons are up but one is starting the intake stroke and one has the valves closed ready for firing.
