The best way to learn jazz improvisation is through transcribing the masters! Milt Jackson was definitely one of the best.

Milt Jackson began his recording career in 1945, cutting his first solos behind Dinah Washington. Shortly thereafter, he began playing with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. It was during this time that he also played with trumpeter Howard McGhee's band, recording this track "Dorothy" with them in 1947.
In those days, recording time was limited, and therefore you didn't hear the long form improvised solos that we associate with a typical jazz performance. Those things happened for sure, just not on recordings. In this particular tune, "Dorothy" (written by McGhee), Milt only has 16 measures to solo on the second half of the rhythm changes form.
His solo starts on the bridge, and weaves brilliantly through the changes, showing some of his already complete mastery of bebop and the intricacies of harmony.
I transcribed the solo and practiced it for about a month before making this video - and I wanted to share with you what I've learned about how Milt constructs his lines, and also about what I think the most effective way to practice transcribed solos is.
People always ask me, "how can I incorporate what I've transcribed into my own playing". I answer that question in the video to the best of my ability.
I hope this video helps you! If you enjoyed this, please "like" "subscribe" "comment" etcetera. If you'd like to support me further, you can check out the links above..
Thanks!
-Tim

I couldn’t help but mention that I just discovered that beats two in three of the first B-flat major chord are exactly note for note the second bar of Charlie Parker‘s solo on ko-ko. Love this stuff!

I bumped into this because I transcribed Anthropology by Milt Jackson(with Dizzy) and I was doing a similar thing you are doing with this. But it's just one chorus and I wanted to get more language to see if I could understand Milt a bit more. and WOW, this stuff is what I've been looking for so long. This channel is so good! I think I haven't found it before because it's labeled "Vibraphone". Anyway, do you have any RHYTHM CHANGES recommendations of Milt's playing that I could look into? Maybe like three tunes that I could transcribe? THANKS!

That was great. But, I would humbly suggest shorter phrases be played in all the keys to hear it, recognize it, and internalize it. One bar at a time in all the keys. Then 2 etc. Thanks!

Thanks Tim. As always, you made a great job 👍 Would you say that on the G7 (mes 3 ans 4 ) we have a nice phrase to illustrate the X 7 13 colour ?

Yeah - I actually started just using that phrase as a Dom13 line in general because it's so nice.

Transcription question: if you hear what sounds like an obvious flubbed note do you write what they played or write what they meant?
@TimCollinsVibes

Depends, if I want to turn it into an exercise, then I’ll play it the way I want it to sound even if it’s different from the original.

Hey, I got a question, how come it is so easy to rush on vibes? I find myself doing this occasionally and some doing it as well. Love the videos. Greetings from Canada.

The other thing I humbly suggest is playing the phrases at different dynamic levels. Start the phrase soft end it loud and vice versa, end to end, from the bottom to the top and top to the bottom. Alter the accents. Play it one time accentuating the up beats. The next time the downbeats. Keyboard players need that because it simulates a horn or a voice more. Also, introduce pedaling variations to let notes ring more or less, and the same with choked or dampened notes. That introduces personal nuance and interpretation from the student to make it their own. Transcriptions are controversial for a good reason. You have to be yourself when you play. Not licks.

@michaelhayes690: Why don’t you make your own transcriptions and post them then? What a useless comment ! @TimCollinsVibes I hope you don’t take these flotsam and jetsom comments seriously . This is a fantastic video . Don’t listen to these people !!
