Great video! Will be using this when I rebuild my identical turbo later this week. Here's a link to my car smokin' like a freight train lol Also, the only thing is that the exhaust side is the turbine side and the intake side is the compressor side. You were calling the exhaust side the compressor side.

Possibly, but, might not be..smaller turbo's are ballenced with the shaft and the turbines, where the bigger turbos, each individual part is balanced,so it doesnt matter how it goes back together

Use 1500 grit wet sand paper on the shaft. I rebuild turbos (non bb) and it works great even though I would never use a shaft that destroyed

i found an smaller, thinner, and not as wide wrench and that helped. not alot of room to try and get the back plate off... tap on the wrench with a rubber mallet.

No problems, It smokes a tad bit only because the shaft itself was messed up on the turbine side to begin with. I rebuilt another one and will be swapping them out later on. I have alot of friends that rebuild theirs and they are still running them 3yrs later with no issues and boosting 20+ psi.

Piston rings is the correct term! The oil as well as providing lubrication also applies a pushing force on the shaft so there is no end play. So the shaft is also acting as a piston. (If you look at a cross section, the turbine end of the shaft resembles a hydraulic ram) There is a thrust bearing (the 270 degree bronze plate) on the opposite end to take up this force. Without the oil pressure pushing on the shaft, the thrust bearing wouldn't work. This is why they're called piston rings and not just an oil seal.

You said all t3 and t4 are basically the same but I missed the first few seconds of the video and I didn't know your compressor housing and turbine housing was A/R.60 and A/R.63 but my t3 is A/R.50 and A/R.63 but I went ahead and bought the kit online down in the link and without realizing and after rewatching the video so I could tear everything down to replace it all when the kit arrives but now I'm just praying to God it fits. If not idk what imma do I'll probably just buy another cheap china turbo for a few hundred bucks

is there a way to turn the center housing 90 degrees? because one of my oil flanges is facing the same way as the compressor flange and its supposed to be facing downwards with the turbine outlet. thanks.

hey my garrett t20 turbo on my street bike is leaking a few drops of oil out of the cold side into my air filter that's clamped right on the turbo. it boost up as normal at 8 psi. what do you think is causing the oil leak? thank you

There are 3 different compressor side seal types for the T3. They are not interchangeable. So when you say they are all the same, they are indeed not. Disassemble your turbo to see if you have the 1 piece carbon seal, the 4 piece carbon seal or the 1 piece integrated seal in the thrust bearing.

Just a heads up you never want to use a wrench on the shaft nut. Use a "T" handle. Keeps the tip of the shaft from bending.

Yes a rebuild can fix shaft play. This all depends on how worn-out the cartridge is. If the cartridge is beyond it's service limits, then new journal bearings and a thrust bearing won't make much of a difference.

Intake side is called compressor wheel and compressor housing Exhaust side is called turbine wheel/shaft and turbine housing. Good job tho.

buy a new core the core is the vital part the compres and exhaust housing are normaly not damaged

journal bearing turbos all have radial play without any oil pressure. just have to measure the play.

i tried the clock way in unloosing the shaft snapped off the bolt it was counter clock wise .. had to order a new shaft balanced, a bit of a hack job with a 30+ kit from China

you took off the compressor housing, not the turbine (which is the exhaust side). as you said, they're balanced, but you should've marked the compressor blades position in relation to the turbine blades. that's the whole idea of "balancing." you're right about grinding the wrenches, but might want to try 6-point and not 12-point... and they're not pistons, that's a turbine shaft and that's the turbine oil seal, or ring, which sits between ring lands. and i'll stop there.

+legioner9 it has been done all the time. Temp has nothing to do with this... Tuning and oiling is the key to swapping one in. Holset, BorgWarner, Garrett, etc.. all reputable manufacturers... Now the correct reason as to why a turbo meant for a diesel wouldn't be optimal on a gas engine is efficiency and being improperly sized.. exhaust housing/wheel etc but it will work

***** well much more than that and the top of your pistons will melt if they are aluminum. the biggest problem is diesel turbos are way to big for most gas engines and they wont spool good and wont get good boost. you could be right about gas being higher temps im not an expert just saying what i learned from experience.

+legioner9 So your telling me that they use different materials in something that uses exhaust to work and spins sometimes in excess of 100k rpm?? Yeah ummright I'm sorry I'm totally wrong on this.. Keep thinking that.... how does have aluminum pistons have to do with anything?? almost all manufacturers use aluminum pistons.. its all in tuning.. how about this while diesel turbos may be improperly sized sometimes.. then why don't ya look in to Holset and Borqwarner before you make stupid assumptions...

The Banks Sidewinder that I have seen is a Mitsubishi TDO7 Turbo. If you send me some pictures i can confirm for you. I rebuild a sidewinder turbo before, it was a mitsubishi TDO7. The TDO7 rebuild kit is more rare, if that is what you have i will point you out in the right direction if you cant find that kit.

I made it a couple minutes in before turning the video off. 1. At 1:27, that is the compressor housing, not turbine housing. Also, it is the impeller, not turbine. 2. Your wrench is spreading because it is a cheap brand, buy something a little better next time. 3. Gator Grip, really? See comment #2. I'm not saying buy Snap-On but at least get the proper tools.

Jared Shaffer I think you are being a bit harsh regarding the use of what you consider the proper tools. If I recall, the end of the turbine shaft has an 8-point drive on it which would require a specialized socket. In addition, that 8-point drive often has some of the points ground away as part of the balancing process. Using a Gator-Grip socket actually gets a better grip in this situation than the "right" socket.
