Always use caution when attempting to work on your car, especially the AC system. If you aren't fully confident in doing the work, take it to a professional.
Buy cans without "self-sealer" and with zero added oil. Self sealer will gum up the system and having too much oil in the system will make it not operate properly.
Here's some links for R134a refrigerant:
Full kit: amzn.to/40bN5xo
Two smaller cans with gauge: amzn.to/3mVza01

For those of you asking and commenting, I'll pin this. Buy cans without "self-sealer" and with zero added oil. Self sealer will gum up the system and having too much oil in the system will make it not operate properly. This method can temporarily fix your cooling issues. If you have to add refrigerant, you have a leak somewhere. So take it to a shop and have them fix the leak. They'll add UV dye to the system and locate the leak. Outside temperature does matter with how much refrigerant you'll need to add. Since I'm keeping this short, a quick Google search on "Automotive Refrigerant Pressure Charts" will have the info you need. If your gauge is in the yellow or red, there's an issue. This will at least tell you something is wrong and you'll need to take it to a professional to have it fixed properly. Since KZfaq took away the ability to link products in Shorts, I cannot add links that'll take you to the products I used. Thanks for watching and commenting, I'll catch you all on the next ride!

Another good reason to not buy any refrigerant that says self sealant is most mechanic shops won't be able to fix it, they'll force you to buy a whole new AC unit setup and that can be expensive. If you're not sure if you have a leak then buy refrigerant with uv dye, and use a uv light on the hoses to check for leaks. That won't cause any issues with a mechanic shop

I have a 2001 Ford crown Vic police interceptor. A neighbor of mine claims that he checked the AC unit for me he was not truthful and honest about what I needed because he wanted my car very badly and I refuse to sell it to him so I had taken my car to another mechanic and that mechanic told me it looks like somebody was trying to sabotage your car. I found out that I need a new spark plugs and coil wires so I purchased all that the guy repaired it plus he had to clean my battery redo my cables on the battery also there were screws missing from under the hood add this guy had told me someone's trying to sabotage your car. I also found out through watching videos for the AC unit this guy not only tried to sabotage my car because he wanted it he didn't have the correct gauges to check my AC unit. Well sadly this man had passed away just a few months ago and I found out that he acted like he knew how to repair people's vehicles and there has been a few people that came back to this guy and wanted their money back because he never finished the job.

It was a drizzly Saturday morning when I popped open the trunk of my car, expecting to find nothing more than the usual clutter. But instead of old jumper cables and an expired first aid kit, my eyes fell on a bright orange bowling ball nestled between a stack of emergency flares and a spare tire. I blinked in surprise, wondering how it had ended up there. As I picked it up, my curiosity was piqued. It was heavier than I expected and felt solid in my hands. I rolled it around, examining its glossy surface and wondering if someone had mistakenly left it in my trunk. The bowling ball seemed so out of place that it might have been a sign. That’s when I noticed an old, faded manual wedged beneath it. I flipped through the pages, half-expecting it to be a forgotten rulebook for a game I had never played. Instead, I discovered it was an instructional guide titled “Rebuilding Your Engine with Simple Tools.” My first thought was that it was a quirky coincidence. I had recently been having trouble with my car’s engine, and here was a manual that seemed to offer just the right guidance. I decided to give it a read. The manual was filled with diagrams and step-by-step instructions, surprisingly easy to follow. I realized it had been published by a DIY enthusiast who had a knack for making complex tasks accessible to novices. Intrigued, I decided to take a leap of faith and tackle the engine repair. I spent the next few days gathering the necessary tools and parts from local auto shops, all while using the manual as my guide. I wasn’t entirely sure what I was doing, but I followed each step meticulously, driven by a newfound determination. The orange bowling ball, with its cheerful color, became an unexpected symbol of my growing confidence. I began by removing the car’s old engine components, following the manual’s detailed instructions. The bowling ball, now an emblem of my journey, sat nearby on a workbench. I found its presence oddly comforting-like a quirky mascot cheering me on. As I reassembled the engine, I could almost feel the manual’s enthusiasm guiding my hands. Each part clicked into place, and I meticulously followed the steps for recalibration and adjustments. It was a slow and careful process, but with each small success, I felt more capable. Finally, the engine was ready. I turned the key, my heart pounding with anticipation. The engine roared to life, a powerful and reassuring sound that filled the garage. I couldn’t help but laugh with relief and joy, amazed that I had managed to accomplish something I never thought possible. That evening, as I looked at the gleaming engine under the hood, I glanced back at the orange bowling ball resting on the workbench. It had been a strange and serendipitous catalyst for my learning experience. The manual, the ball, and my perseverance had all come together to create something extraordinary. In the end, the bowling ball had done more than just amuse me; it had led me on a journey of discovery and accomplishment. And as I drove away in my freshly repaired car, I couldn’t help but smile at the thought of how a simple object had transformed into a symbol of my unexpected triumph.

Nice but, what do you do after? Blow the rest of the can into the air?
@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage 11 ай бұрын
Why would you do that? You simply turn the valve off and disconnect it from your vehicle...Then save it.
@steveklein4367
@steveklein4367 11 ай бұрын
Makes sense if there's some left in there, but I think many people would disconnect it just to throw out the can even so. I used a small 2oz can just to get some lube in there, and it had a self-sealing orifice. I would recommend those types to avoid the issue entirely, now that I've seen the process myself. For the first time in ~20 years.@@SlothKingGarage

Could be a few things. Like a fuse blowing, low on refrigerant or the fact that it's just worn out and needs to be replaced.

@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage 4 ай бұрын
They sell some that does have leak sealer, but I do not recommend that. You're better off getting the leak repaired since it's going to most likely just be an o-ring that's bad

Is it bad to have a missing valve cap?
@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage Жыл бұрын
It's not the end of the world, but you should get a cap for it to keep debris out of the valve area. Before attaching a hose to it, clean the area so you don't get any debris in the AC system

What if you change evaporator and system is empty. Do you need to add oil ?
@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage 3 ай бұрын
You will, since there will be some residual oil in it when it's removed. It could be up to an ounce or a little more. I can't give a proper amount as it depends on the size of said evaporator. Usually the shop manual for the vehicle will list a ballpark amount to add

Found all of this very helpful but when I put the coupler on the low pressure valve and start filling it spews coolant like it's a bad fit. Is that okay? I don't want to waste half the coolant and have to buy more.
@SlothKingGarage

Hmm that's not supposed to do that. It's supposed to lock on there, did you hear a click when you put the coupler on?

The pressure, in terms of being in the blue, depends greatly on the ambient air temperature. If it's 90+ degrees outside you need to go as high as 55psi.

The issue with this, is that you're putting whatever trapped air that's inside the hose into the AC system. Mind you an AC System needs to be purged from air before introducing new freon into it. Otherwise, this method not good in the long term

Not to mention that refrigerant is not a fuel. It doesn't get used up by A/C over time. If your system is low on refrigerant, it has leaked out and will continue to do so until the leak is corrected.

I keep seeing to put it on recirculation before recharging but my lever is broken. I took the panel face off hoping to manually switch it but it won't move. What happens if i recharge and it isn't on recirculate?
@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage Жыл бұрын
It'll be fine if you can't. The temps won't get as cold because it's allowing some outside air to enter the cabin. The compressor also won't be engaged 100% of the tike either. So don't expect it to get super ice cold. Just be sure to charge it while you hear the ac compressor on. Think of the non-recirculation option as allowing some outside fresh air in and the compressor not turning on as frequently. Which results in less cooler temps. Now the recirculation part, you'll get cooler cabin temps since you're not letting in outside air. And the compressor is always on, further supplying cooler air. Hope this helps!
