I like to get the best natural tone out of the instrument itself and then try to bring out that character. My 79 Kimbara Jazz copy has SD Quarter Pounds and Rotosounds. A smidge of MXR envelope filter and the tube maxed on my Trace Elliot SMX recorded from the line out for a warm classic tone that responds to my fingers. My Aria with its PJ configuration has D'Addarios and I like a clean punchy sound that's expressive whether I'm playing fingerstyle, pick, or slap - sometimes all three in the same song!

Warren, it was you that told me to seperate the bass at 250hz....I do this with Cambridge EQ and Butterworth 5....can't remember if that was your advice or not....but never changed it since I started.

I have been spending much time honing my bass tone lately, as I am a guitar player. I got a great tone on a song I just finished by using a large felt pick into a LaChapell tube preamp DI (with lots of hair on it)>1176>LA2A clone with my P-Bass. I found that saturation/distortion plugins were not helping in the mix, so I relied on the abovementioned tube saturation and boosting lots of mids with UA Pultec MEQ.

I tend to use quite a bit of distortion/fuzz with moderate compression on bass in mixes that are on the dense side. I find pushing the odd harmonics helps make the bass tracks cut through the mix without having to increase the volume. Although, when soloed it does sound pretty ratty, it works pretty well for me in many situations. Now and then I use a slight chorus as well. For sparse mixes, especially with acoustic instruments, I like a cleaner, warm, rubbery tone. Some really good tips in this video!

Phenomenal, thank you! As a tip for all fellow bass players: Don't forget to really dig into the strings like Adam does. Otherwise you don't get that nice poppy punchy snappy sound. It is so essential, and often missed by people. How you play the strings is so important for the sound. Btw reminds me of Fleas sound on the Californication album. All around the world in particular ;D

I fine the tone Adam is demonstrating works best in a mix where you want the bass to be felt, but not necessarily heard. Sort of a rolling bottom end which can add some character to the guitars thanks to all the grit and grind. For me, I prefer something with more pronounced mids and less of that hi-fi clacky scoop. Think Dave Ellefson on the classic Megadeth albums or Dave Hope from Kansas
