I don’t really need help with the recovering just with understanding war exhaustion. Like how does winning ground battles without losing any of my troops due to high disengage percentage cause my war exhaustion to rise significantly more than the people I just conquered

War exhaustion basically is a way to prevent wars from going on forever, if it reaches 100% then after I think 2 years you are forced to accept a status quo peace. (Or the AI will auto-accept it.) Attrition is just a passive counter that ticks up, so even if you never actually fight you won’t get stuck being at war forever. Losses from ships is straight forward. Ground armies are a bit confusing because defensive armies (spawned by enforcers / soldier jobs) don’t count towards it, only offensive armies that can go into space count. I don’t believe disengagement raises war exhaustion but I’ve not tested it. The fourth on is if you destroy planets. Really its not that important of a mechanic. There are no effects of war exhaustion apart from the forced peace, so I don’t often look at it too much unless I’m concerned I won’t achieve my goals in time.
