Recipe:
20 grams/0.7 oz of soap
2 teaspoon water
Optional: 0.5% essential oils or fragrance (for my amount, I added 0.10 gram/ 0.0035 oz which is about 3 drops)
The purpose of adding water is solely to avoid the soap from burning and sticking onto the saucepan. Therefore, you really do not need lots of water: remember, all the water you add in, will need to evaporate out, and if you add too much water the soap will be soft and mushy and never really set. A good rule of thumb is to add about 1 teaspoon of water every 10 grams /0.35 oz of soap.
Tip: if your soap was a bit drying and you want to add some moisture you can add some glycerin or oil (just a couple of drops for every 10 grams /0.35 oz of soap)
Did you know you can also melt shampoo bars scraps into a new bar? However, you should not need to add any water since shampoo made with detergents melts much easier.

Beauty! Never thought of grating the soap bits. 911 tip for you!! Instead of putting the soap directly into a sauce pan, make or buy a small double boiler. It's easy to make one, use a small; sauce pan filled with a third to a half of water bringing to water a boil. Then place a bowl that's at least an inch or wider than your sauce pan. Bingo, u got your dbl boiler. The heat won't be as intense, and much more diffused to allow to heat the soap bits much longer without burning. In theory, it should allow you to have a much smoother and compacter soap. WARNING: Be careful with the homemade DBL boiler, the bowl will get very hot from the steam, since the bowl doesn't have a handle, use a towel. OR for those who know, use a Channel Lock/Something like a C.L. with the clapping surface wrapped in tape to not chip your bowl. ALSO, be careful when moving the bowl over the sauce pan, any gaps will shoot a blast of steam which will burn. SO BE CAREFUL!!

You don't have to grate the soap bits. Bung them in the saucepan as they are. It will take longer to melt. You can speed the process up if you mash them with the back of a spoon. It's not a waste of time.
