My Mom was raised during The Depression & The War… hence nothing went to waste in my childhood home… and certainly not soap!! Mom made “Soap Pouches” from all the leftover wafers of soap. She would cut 2 smallish squares (about 5”x5”) from an old facecloth or thin towel and then sew them together on 3 sides with an external seam. Then fill the pouch with the soap wafers, and lastly stitch it shut across the top (external seam, nothing fancy). We kids loved using the “Soap Pouch” in the bathtub. I just thought I would share this, as it is another way to use up leftover soap. Thanks for always being so thrifty and resourceful Gittemary… my Mom would have loved you!! 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary💕🧼

I knit and crochet and make little soap saver pouches to put bars of soap in to use in the shower and that way when you get down to the slivers you can just keep using soap in the little pouch!

Usually I just take the sliver of old soap, wet it and stick it onto the new soap bar (kind of have to get it soft, then push/mold it into the new soap, then let it dry for a while, to get it to stick) and use it up that way, so I only ever have one bar of any type of soap going at a time, but I'm tempted to try this now, if only for the fun/chaos!

I think you should try melting it even more so it is more liquidy and then pour it immediately to a silocone muffin mold, you can get that out more easily when it cools down 😊

What happened was, you had some glycerin-based soaps - black - and some alkaline processed soaps - the ones that grated into powder. Alkaline soaps don't remelt, but the glycerin kinds will hold the powders together. Nicely done. Love "Frankensoap."

loved this! I also do the same with candles and create a Frankencandle and use a piece of an old cotton TShirt as the wick :D

I usually grate mine, melt it down, add a few teaspoons of vegetable glycerin, then put it in an upcycled foaming soap dispenser and use it for hand soap.

I always use the same soap, for shampoo bar and body so I am going to keep the scraps seperatly so I can make the same soap again haha. Thanks for the tip.

I usually just start using a new bar together with the sliver left of the old one. When you use them and kind of rub them together with water it will make them stick together. I do use the method you're using in the video for candles though :)

I enjoyed the video very much and also your sense of humour :) Here are some well-tried tips. I think the grated soap should be melted even more to produce a very thick smooth paste, then left to dry in the tins for a few days. The way you did it, I'd be afraid the soap bar might soon crumble into small pieces, and clog the drain. What I do with our soap leftovers is liquid soap. Easy and lazy way! Take a jar, add a bit of hot water in it, drop the soap scrap broken into pieces (no need to grate), shake it a bit and close the jar. Later each time you have a scrap of soap, just add it to it and shake. With time, you'll get liquid creamy hand soap, or even a thick paste which you can use to clean the bathroom, toilet bowl, or anyting you want (you can add bicarbonate of soda to make it a bit abrasive). If like me, you do this with true green olive oil soap you can also use it as a stain cleaner on clothes and fabric, or even to protect your plants from bugs, it's very effective! Finally, once I put too many soap pieces and too little water, it became very thick, I forgot about it and by mistake it became a soap bar or rather a soap cake! I had to cut the bottom of the plastic bottle to get it out and was so excited as it made a great dish soap cake!

You could put the tins into the freezer for maybe 2 hours and bang them upside down on the counter and they fall right out. Works with candle jars too

I have done this! But I now use a little fine mesh bag and put my soap scraps in it until it is pretty full, then use it until they are gone and start again. This is easier for lazy me.

Love this! I've been saving soap scraps but all the tutorials I've seen use either used tetra packs or silicone molds, which I don't have. Glad to know I can just use the tins I have saved for blade recycling :)

I found it easier to put the soap in a pot, cover it with water, no more than just above, boil and then pour into a silicone mold. I also used a glass jar lid + covered it with parchment or wax paper and then taped the paper to the back of the lid. I then froze the soap after to speed drying and then took it out after a few minutes to leave until I thought it was completely solid again. Afterwards I just untaped the wax paper/parchment and pushed the soap off of it. I attempted to microwave the soap but it made the soap dry and didn’t melt. Also I don’t have silicone molds so I just resorted to a glass jar lid

neat idea. i used to cut up melt and pour soap and add scents to it. then i finally got to making my own homemade soap. i enjoy making soap its a fun hobby to have. and ive enjoyed giving my homemade soaps to neighbors, friends and relatives. nice to meet you.

We did this as kids (early-mid 1960's) using old tuna cans lined up along the edge of the bath tub....Tuna cans both rust and corrode and, I would recommend a glass container. Simply breaking the original soap bars up left us with crumbles which more often than not left the resulting bar disintegrating when in use. Creating a slurry out of the original bars then letting it dry in the tuna cans, in the humid bathroom, along side the tub subject to additional splashes - made them take up to months to dry out AND subject to growing mold. We didn't have microwaves back then but, im not sure our utilitarian bar soaps without oil-added moisturizers would have melted in a double boiler; we knew better than to ask to try to use the upper end, prized double boiler for soap however. Shredding the soap ends, adding less water to slurry the shreds together, and a dryer environment was what we were concluding about the time my mother ended the soap making experiments with mold in one of the rusty tins, cold slime in another, and one which might have made it 'cause we used the new serated steak knives (another set of issues all together). Plus, we may have been creating soap ends at an accerated pace.

I enjoyed the video a lot, but I do not have your levels of energy and patience! I just buy flat rectangular pieces of soap and when the current soup is starting to get thin, I wash my hands with both the old and a new bar of soap. Then, I press the two wet and softened pieces of soap together really hard, move the combined piece around in my hands a bit more to have smoother edges and let it dry. This gives you a layered soap (potentially with different colors and smells) without any melting and fuzz. The first two or three times I use it, I handle the bar with a bit of care, but then it is usually just one solid bar. When it becomes too thin...

I have been making soap myself for close to a year, enjoying every moment and doing lots of experiments. It did wonders for my hair, and I was able to stop using all the beauty products and creams thanks to it. I'm curly so it was a real challenge to stop :)

I wonder if this would go smootly with a bit of new sopa(that thingy you buy for soap making). Like plastic and virgin plastic. It is a good hack to remake soap. I just found that the ones that fall apart quickly or have pieces of flowers etc inside are not good in this proceedure

Cold process soaps (made with lye) can be melted, but it should be done very gently with a double boiler or slow cooker with a small bit of water (the soaps lose about 10-20% of their weight in water during curing)

I think Google was referring to a soap base, which is not the same as a soap. I would stick to the double boiler method to melt grated soap.

Meatball of death, ha ha too funny… 😆 I chop up with knife, while water in pot boiling dump soap in double boiler method, then shape in silicone molds. Silicone much easier to pop out when done. Thanks for another great video. I also make our dishwashing detergent and clothes soap. Laundry powder = baking soda, washing soap, borax & some soap flakes, dishwashing powder = baking soda, washing soap, borax, vinegar for separate pocket for rinsing. 🤓👍💕

I just have to ask… I’ve been switching out plastic bottles in the bathroom in favor of soap. I do love a soap bar and during the past 4 years I’ve used up every kind of soap on the market. While I’m super happy with my solid shampoo bar I just cannot find a hand soap that doesn’t clog the sink. I don’t want to give up and I don’t want to throw a harsh cleanser down the pipes to get rid of the oil film that forms there. Is this a common issue? How do people manage this? It didn’t happen with liquid soap, so I’m thinking about going back to that, just purchasing it in a refillable format to save some packing.

If you only wet your hands and not the soap, the soap will last much longer. The soap should never get under running water. Only touch the soap with you wet hands. Like your channel

Just a friendly PSA: Please, please be careful doing this. When heating up and mixing up different soaps and bars you might be creating a bar that is unstable and unpredictable. Some ingredients in these bars (including preservative ingredients) can’t withstand a lot of heat and could also react with each other or cancel each other out. Not to mention the bacteria that might be on these bars that are now encapsulated within the new bar. In other words you might be creating something that can be irritating or harmful to the skin. I'm all for using up every last bit of product! 🙌 💚 But if you try this out, maybe don't use the finished product on your skin and hair but for housecleaning or laundry purposes. Also, before use, check carefully for any mould growth!

I tried doing this a few weeks ago, but it just became frothy and brown and lumpy, and wouldn't melt or set again 😭

If you want marbled soap just melt the colors separately and pour one color into another and swirl it with your chopstick.

Love this video! But you should never put soap in the microwave in combination with water. I did it once and the same thing happend, my family is still mocking me with it. The convinced me that if you do it without the water it will be fine, but I'm to scared to try😂😅

What do you do if every time that you buy bar soap your kids turn it into small clumps of goo on your sink? A bar of soap is lucky to last a single day in our household due to this issue. We have several children, so it makes it difficult to even figure out which child is doing it.

I wouldn't trust the microwave for this. Best do it in a pan with a bit of water.

I find that grating the soap scraps causes a "powder" to rise that can get breathed into the lungs. Nasty! I use a knife and cutting board and chop the soap scraps into smaller pieces. After the soap sludge is melted, I spoon it into greased mason jar lids and place the lids on waxed paper. I let the soap cure for several days, occasionally flipping the cakes over. When completely dried, the cakes pop easily out of the mason-jar-lid molds. I then let the soap cure several more days before storing.

apparently if you put a tablespoon or so of water in it while melting, your life would have been a lot easier. for next time!

You use electricity and water to form that hybrid soap wouldn't it have been more efficient to just use the pieces up?
