How to remove a front CV axle on Tesla with a cheap diy cable!

To start off this is my opinion how you can pull an axle in a video but you should always follow service manual procedures and be safe!
There are expensive tools out there and some do not work! I could not find anything that would work without buying teslas “specific” tool and decided to make my own version of a tool that works for pulling all CRV axles and especially Tesla model S/X front drivers side! The axle is so far recessed near the drive unit, it took me over an hour to pull the axle out the first time by drilling a hole and prying it out which is NOT recommended! You can damage the drive unit case or mount.
So I went to the hardware store and made my own!
You will need a slide hammer but you can see it works like a charm!
I hope this video helps and I will be making more to sell for way less than other pullers cost and this is universal for all/most cv axles!
Always be safe when working on cars and be sure to torque everything down on reinstall!

Question: When installing axle again: Should there be some back and forth play from the driveshaft to the drive unit? In normal cars there is, however I'm unsure in these cars? I replaced my Model S 17 driveshaft and could not get the play to disappear, it locks into the locking ring ofcourse but there is around 5mm back and forth play. Thanks!

CV’s have play at the joints for suspension travel

Movement is necessary for suspension travel. These axles are same as others just beefier. So that back/forth movement is ok as long as the ring is locked in. That “play” is a good thing. If you pull the cv bearings out of the groove it won’t move. That’s bad. So you’re ok.

Did fluid come out of that? The repair guide tells you to drain the transmission, but the fluid is like magical and almost impossible to obtain.

Have yet to have any fluid come out of the hole. Have done hundreds.

Where can you buy the axle? I have a 2019 gen 2 model x.. tesla won’t even respond to my parts request

@@kitchan9354 Tesla is really hard to get parts direct. You would be better off buying aftermarket or used good condition.

Depending on year. Early S’s had gear fluid (straight cut gears inside) then after changed to It’s atf-9 and the latest newer models use Unicorn blood lol. So far I have not seen it sold lesser than a 55gal drum. And it looks like old trans fluid, hazy maroon-ish. But the fluid does not need to be serviced. If you drain it, catch it and re-use

u just got lucky, those c-clips is pain in the butt if they overstretch.

No luck.. they can overstretch if you don’t put it in right. When you install the axle, put the opening of the C-clip facing down. Luck is if you don’t know what your doing. I pull out axles from 3 & Y’s with a flex head pry bar. This tool is for the front units w/o access.
