So cool Rally crew chief here: These engines have a real issue with a few things. PCV should be scavenged through a catch can via the exhaust as a venturi. The computer sees the PCV as fuel (O2 sensor) under boost and leans out accordingly and or pulls timing when it gets knock from becoming lean Cylinder 4 has poor cooling and can have predet because of this. There are fixes made by several companies The turbo inlet pipe should be replaced as it is prone to tearing and any post MAF leaks will cause headaches The knock sensor should be replaced and sprayed with a dielectric layer (they all crack and suffer from moister intrusion) Coil packs are important and have a shelf life of about 60k kilometers Oil pickup/baffling is an important for rally along with a skid plate reinforced under oil pan but actual tarmac racing will require a dry sump system. The up pipe, header flex pipe and flanges are all prone to leaking and should be replaced and flat faced. The TGV valves can be removed internally to avoid issues. The stock top mount intercooler should have heat shielding on the turbo side and a chimney set up to direct air from the hood scoop to the turbo to push hot air under the car. The rear of the hood should be spaced to allow excess hot air to escape when racing to avoid massive under hood temperatures. The rear differential outrigger arms need a "cushion" installed as a shim abover the outboard mounts to avoid clunking (truck mud flaps cut into circles work) So many more things important to racing but who knows what direction you guys are going with this. As rally codriver/driver as well as sf5 owner and mechanic by hobby, 100% on this... On other note often overlooked when using subaru in rally/motorsport application: TUNER! There is differences between dyno queen tuner chasing beautiful grapgh and big power... Then there is proper tuner knew how to make the engine last whole rally season...

@@AmirPomengreat note, I couldn't agree more. Not so much for performance as for longevity. Making it to the last stage is how a podium finish happens. We prefer road tunes vs dyno queen tunes. Better to have it work well in the condition you intend to use it rather than have bragging rights for telling your buddies at car shows and vape store parking lots

I realise that it must come as a big surprise but there are other engines other than a small block Chev. They are not weird, they are just not what you are used to seeing, and that makes them different, not weird. The Subaru boxer engine, in all it's variations, is incredibly successful and versatile. you guys should inspect the rear suspension top hat/strut top mounts and arches around there. in canada, those are very notorious for rusting out on an otherwise decent looking vehicle..

Fun to see Davin get into the Subaru! See it's not as hard as it look! It all comes apart as little sub-assemblies. That intake will come off with almost all the fuel, vacuum, and sensors as one unit. You'll be down to a long block in no time.

Awesome, I am working on a Subaru Legacy right now. The original owner had the timing belt break. I am in the process right now of over-hauling a junk yard engine to put in it. Its an Arizona car and completely rust free.

Never seen a Subaru motor pulled this way haha! They’re surprisingly easy to yank out from above, since the bell housing is in the middle of the engine bay and just about all the hoses and lines come off with the intake manifold. Can’t wait to see how weirded-out Davin gets once this thing’s apart lol

A few years ago I bought a beater '97 Outback to play with. It had multiple issues and was already mechanically totalled, but I got a good year and a half of fun out of it. I see the attraction. The top mechanical issues, BTW, were a dead clutch pack, weird noises from the transmission in reverse, and no service history on the head gaskets.

Fun fact, you can mostly rebuild a Subaru Boxer engine with just a 10,14 & 17mm wrench/socket. They are actually very simple to work on once you get past the wierdness. Really looking forward to this build!

I don't know how far ahead the project is, but Subaru fans love their cars. Popular mods are JDM engine swaps and STi conversions. Even a six speed manual transmission is considered an upgrade. And, yeah, the frame rails and body needs much needed attention.

If this is your first metric engine, have fun not losing your 10mm tools. Everybody who works on modern cars likes to joke that when they need a 10mm tool the most, they can't find it. You might be able to locate a beefy subframe made of welded chromoly steel. They make great replacements for the stock stamped steel ones cars come with. Since you need one new subframe anyway, that's not so bad.

Davin I will add to the Rock auto tip to dip the end of the fastener in a little oil before putting it back. Especially when dealing with rusty M 6's. Great use for that little bit of oil in the bottom of the oil bottle.

Careful with the machine work on the case halves if that needs to be done. They are really sensitive to shifting without proper torque plate setup and the bores and mainline can end up all over the place if done improperly.

So, what was the purpose of pulling the whole subframe assembly? Are you replacing it too? I only ask because I usually just yank it out from the top for rebuilds. I typically get it done in about an hour that way, but you seem to have bigger plans. I gotta say though, I'm really excited to see this channel take on a Subie. It definitely caught me by surprise. It's definitely out of the norm for you guys. I think the closest I've seen on this channel was the Beetle. That was also worth the watch. I can't wait to see the progress on this. Keep up the good work!!!

Yes, I saw all the rust, but he also said he broke a couple bolts he had no intention on replacing. So, now I'm confused because he'd only be snapping bolts from the subframe to the unibody. There's only two nuts holding the engine to the subframe and those usually come right out. And the way he beat on the car early on makes me think the rest of the car was going to scrap. Either way, his process was interesting to watch.

That rusted “subframe” is actually a US spec piece for crash safety. They don’t sell it on them in the JDM market. If you don’t put one back on it’s a nice weight savings for the front end. Cheers.

As for the Red Annodized Pulley on the crank if it also has lightweight flywheel then its a very much worth it mod as the pulley is cheap and flywheel not so bad. But the Engine revs upto that 7,000 rpm almost half the time (or about 35-45% reduction in Wind out time depending on how light the flywheel is) Majorly improves Throttle response and drivability and also performance as the engine revs out much faster just doing this mod alone takes more than 1sec of 0-60mph times

The casual mention of how bad the car is makes me wonder what this engine is going to be going into when it's finished. Then the seemingly random shot of a Beetle in the back ground shot at one point. These engines are often used in Beck Spyders and similar low production cars. I'm curious where this engine will be put after it's finished. Can't wait to see the series. I've never seen a Subaru engine taken apart.

Engine comes out the top mate. Not the bottom! Be sure to put a new turbo on it and some new headers - easy power gains and sounds way better - the OEM exhaust is crud and weighs a ton also. Have fun - your first JDM!

Clean it first for as someone use to say when I was in the military, "A clean shop is a happy shop and a happy shop is a clean shop." Plus who like having dirt in their eyes? Anyway from what I have heard Subaru's are built to last but I admit I have only owned one in my life and it was doing well until I went to Japan for a year as my cousins never moved it in LA and it got taken by the state and that was the last I ever herd of it.

Stage rallying is relatively popular in Michigan, but I can't in my wildest dreams imagine Hagerty spending the money to make this legal for competition. Maybe gravel TSD Rally car for events like POR? Both these type of events are run on backroads like those in the intro. Easiest/quickest would probably be rallyx.

Also i would have taken off the back tyres and takens weight from the back of the wagon, They are pretty heavy in the back and without engine that car has about 80% of its weight resting on the rear hoist arms or worse about 75% of it Behind the Rear Arm making it possible it could tip back off the hoist if some simply pushes up on the front too much to say undo something
