Clean you intercooler for better engine efficiency! Step-by-step video/guide how to remove and clean the intercooler of the 1.6HDi and 1.6TDCi engines, Car in video is Peugeot Partner 2007
I used 1L of acetone to clean the inside of the intercooler split into 3 parts.
Then I used a lot of water to clean the residue of the acetone.
Left it to dry for ~1-2h and a lot of hair-dryer blasting inside.

Hi Clint, it's not that different than cleaning the EGR valve. In general there is a bit of oil coming from the crankcase breather that coats the intercooler in oily film. This reduces the efficiency of the intercooler. By how much it depends on how much oil it gets passed through.

@moremolecules
@moremolecules 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads up. There were not really any noticeable symptoms, it was more of trying to keep the engine at optimal conditions. 2,500 seems quite a bit high, mine the torque starts at ~1,800rpm, i.e. the turbo kicks in. A dirty intercooler could potentially loose efficiency and not cool the air, hence less dense air can be compressed by the turbo. If I were you I would hook it up to Diagbox/Lexia/PP2000 and see if there are any errors, EGR, MAF, injectors, etc.

@moremolecules
@moremolecules 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bahadir, yes it is normal to have oil around it. It should not be too excessive though. It comes from the turbo and from the crankcase breather, i.e. oil evaporates and then gets blown through the turbo and condenses in the intercooler. It would be a good idea to clean it. I would use petrol or other cleaning agents and not acetone, as acetone may soften the plastic around it.

After the intercooler where does the hot air go?
@moremolecules

After the intercooler the air is colder and it goes into the air doser. The air doser has a butterfly valve that adjusts the air flow. That also needs cleaning from time to time.
@carlosmonteiro8616
@carlosmonteiro8616 5 жыл бұрын
@@moremolecules My 1.6 hdi is making tapping noise in line with the RPMs. The sound comes from between the doser and the high-pressure fuel pump. Engine start is sometimes very rough, and tapping noise is usually not there in the beginning and it always comes after a few minutes driving, mainly when the engine is already hot. Sometimes after I park the car and shut off the engine, a few seconds later I hear something that resembles a valve moving into place, like if it was left stuck for a moment. When that happens the car was making tapping noises when running. Can this be a bad air doser, or high fuel pressure pump with a valve partially stuck? Can it be the vacuum pressure pump, and the turbo geometry valve is partially stuck? If I rev the engine hard enough it stays normal for a couple of minutes with no tapping noise. I think cleaning the inter-cooler should improve heat transfer. Improving performance slightly. But if there is oil sludge in the cooler, then how long before you're inter-cooler is oiled up again?
@moremolecules
@moremolecules 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Deon, that is a good question. I have an oil catch can fitted, so I really hope that it will take awhile to oil the intercooler again. It really depends on how much oil the car is spewing into the air intake - pre-turbo. If you loose oil in-between services, then the intercooler will get oily quicker than if you do not have to top up the oil. There is no simple way to answer the question. If the car does not loose any oil in-between services than it would be fairly clean for longer, how long is different matter. I have had the car for ~8years and has ~95k miles on the clock, but there is no need to top up with oil in-between regular oil changes. When I cleaned it, as shown in the video, there is only a film, rather than pooled oil inside. Hope this makes sense.

@Deontjie 4 жыл бұрын
@@moremolecules I hear that worn injectors can INCREASE the amount of oil. Skewing oil check results. But how much oil ends up in your oil catch can?
@moremolecules
@moremolecules 4 жыл бұрын
@@Deontjie Not too sure what you meant by worn injectors and skewing oil check results. Overall the oil that ends in the intercooler will be from the sump oil. If the injectors are that bad that spew oil from them, then that has to looked at. I have only emptied the oil catch can twice, so not too much observation how much oil ends in it. It has a bit of oil inside and last time I checked it was fair amount. My hose only captures ~60ml of fluid, so I suspect that ~10-15ml is oil. The other thing is that the turbo can leak a bit of oil in the intercooler on the turbine side. Mine leaks a bit, which goes with the air in the intercooler.
@Deontjie
@Deontjie 4 жыл бұрын
@@moremolecules It is now 22:24 here in Cape Town. Excess fuel from worn fuel injectors can contaminate the engine oil. And increase the amount of oil. Or so I have heard. All I want is to restore the lost power in my 150,000 km VW T3.
@moremolecules
@moremolecules 4 жыл бұрын
@@Deontjie Hmm, generally worn injectors can potentially contaminate the oil, but they are very volatile, so they will evaporate quite quickly and get burned off. I am not 100% certain, but this would not really increase the amount of oil in the sump, i.e. if you check the dipstick. Cleaning the intercooler would certainly give you some power back, depending on how oily it was to begin with. A secret though, change the gearbox oil, this certainly restores quite a bit of power and decreases fuel consumption.

if i am not worng is ABS who is petrolium plastic. it eat the plastic. yes is thick you are right but what happen between the aluminum and plastic and there is too a join between them ? why dont you use gasoline ? or an strongre degreaser ? :) about eating plastic when acetone start to disolv the plasti it make it soft like chweengum. for me the only good point of the acetone is to make it evaporate very fast. at 60°c it come gaz and evaporate

@@fraizer2600 It could be ABS, not too sure. In hindsight and that you have mentioned it, I should have probably used petrol or something else. I was probably lucky, nothing was dissolved and the plastic did not change at all.

Hello, I guess, there is not sense to clean the intercooler when didnt broke anything in turbo before.... there isnot any demonstrable waste of power due to less oil.....
@moremolecules
@moremolecules 4 жыл бұрын
Hi chromance, not entirely true. With time the crankcase breather oily vapor and turbo seepage will condense in the intercooler as oily film. This oily film will reduce the efficiency of the intercooler, thereby it will not sufficiently cool the compressed (hot) air from the turbo and you get loss in power/consumption due to loss in compression ability, i.e. cold air is denser than hot air. I cannot measure the addition of power/decreased consumption, as getting on a dyno is too expensive for me, but should be an increase in power.

Did I really see you use your torque wrench as a ratchet !
@moremolecules
@moremolecules 4 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. In other words, I know I should not do that, but sometimes it is so much more convenient to just ratchet with the torque wrench, rather than change and use another wrench. I absolutely know that this should not be done :-) Well noticed and caught. My fault completely.

At Peugeot Partner / Citroën Berlingo 1.6 HDI with climate control, it´s not possible to take the intercooler out from under, I removed the coolant radiator and will give it a try like that way, otherwise the total front of the car :-((( must be released

Hi Jacobs, it is possible that it cannot be taken out from under the car. Unfortunately, I do not have one with climate control and cannot quite comment. If it does not work with the radiator removed, the front bumper is not that difficult to remove. Good luck

Acetone and plastic.... hmm

Thanks for the comment vince. I agree, in a hindsight, should have used petrol or something else. It looked like ABS plastic and is pretty hard and did not dissolve it, but you are correct should have been say petrol and not acetone.

You did all that work for nothing within a day it would have been back to the same way it was all that crap would have been sitting at the bottom and wouldn’t have moved

Hi Robert, while I agree that it will return to being dirty again with use of the car, the stuff at the bottom will have moved through use of solvent.
