Most people would recommend a pressure pot for degassing resin. But if you use a slow setting resin, the vacuum chamber can really work on achieving crystal clear castings.
Tools and materials I propose:
Vacuum chamber kit: amzn.to/2E4L5jd
Vacuum pump oil: amzn.to/2Ul0XE5

I think if you can get away with a vacuum pot for your needs then it is best to stay there. You can always get better results with a pressure pot as you can do it after pouring your mold but there is also significant danger involved with pressure pots. Vacuum is not even close to as bad as things will implode rather than explode. It can still be dangerous of course but just not as bad. This video doesn't really show it but you usually end up with bubbles on your pour into the mold when you use a vacuum pot. This really depends on the exact mold you use, some are easier than others to avoid bubbles.

So happy I watched this before trying my pump! (of course I'll ready the instructions, but I'm a visual learning person). You've saved me some real messes! Pressure pots scare me ever since I was a kid and saw an accident with a kitchen pressure pot.

I used to vacuum acrylic resin several years ago. I utilized a technique I haven't heard mentioned in any of these videos. When the resin was about to overflow, I would close all valves and trap the vacuum. The bubbles would slowly subside on their own. Then I would vacuum again, trap again, and repeat until I saw no more bubbles.

Fascinating! And dramatic is certainly the word. Amazing to see just how much air is dissolved in the resin - it produces so much foam. That's quite dramatic too. Thanks for this mate, most interesting.

@@ScrapwoodCity your welcome. You clarified my doubt because everyone else was saying its better to use a preasure pot to cast resin but you showed how by letting some air in every time the resin rises to bring it back down, will eventually get rid of all the air bubbles. So no need to have to use both machines.

Hi, thanks for posting and sharing tips on how to degas resin! How are you able to keep the pump going for that long? My instruction manual says that once the needle stops moving the pump needs to be shut off. I have a 2 QT BACOENG VACCUM CHAMBER AND PUMP. It takes less the 30 seconds for the needle to get to -29 and then stops moving and I have to shut it off (stays on less then 1 minute) and there are still so much bubbles in the container. I hope you can help me.
@ScrapwoodCity
@ScrapwoodCity 3 жыл бұрын
Actually I don't turn the pump off. I usually de-gass for about 5 minutes then I stop and then I repeat the process a couple of times more. Sometimes you may still see bubbles during the vacuum process. But in the final product they will not be visible!

So many people need to understand how essential degassing is. And not just before the pour, but after. But, don't a lot of long-settimg resins build up more heat? And I'd still recommend pressurizing during the final setting. My experience is not from making beautiful art pieces, but making hardware that goes into outer space. It is nice to see these standards being applied to art as well. Beautiful example of proper degassing.

Also, I highly recommend opening the release valve and normalizing the pressure BEFORE turning off the vacuum pump, especially if you are using an oil-lubricated pump. Otherwise the vacuum chamber can pull contaminants and oil out of the pump and into the chamber.

Nice explanation and video. When you say "slow setting resin", is there a reason for using one that takes so long? What brand? Thank you!

Thank you. The vacuum process needs about 20minutes, so a resin that starts to set in an hour or so won’t work.

@@ScrapwoodCity Pardon, I'm not understanding why that wouldn't work. If it starts to set in an hour and it takes 20 minutes to degas wouldn't you have 40 minutes to work with it? Thank you for making this excellent video :)

Are you putting the resin onto the table? If so take a heat gun or hair dryer to it and that should help.

The only way to use a vacuum chamber for table pours is to degas the resin after mixing and before pouring it onto the table.

You vacuum the epoxy before you pour it into a mould. Or do you pour it in to a mould then vacuum it?
