What’s best about your videos is your unhurried explanations. Well done. Old screws are really tough to get out. Don’t expect them to be easy. Household jobs, done correctly, usually take much longer than you think. It’s all about self-reliance, self-esteem, and perseverance.

Thx for the Impact Driver video. It worked! Spent weeks trying to remove screws attached to stainless steel. I tried EZ Outs/Speed Outs, screw extractors, rubber bands, super glue, drill bits, gloves, and the only thing that worked was using a rotary tool with cutter (Harbor Freight $10) to cut a line/slit(Phillips flathead) in the center of the screw so an Impact Driver can hold onto the screw. My screw was too short and the material was very soft. Put painters tape on the screw before using an Impact Driver(Amazon $12). This was the only thing that worked for me. Hope this helps someone out there.

This was great! I'm replacing rusted door hinges and needed this advice for a rusted, stripped screw. The titanium drill bit did the magic. You have just the right amount of instruction without any backstories... very precise and helpful!

Thanks Leah, I bought a bandsaw on Craigslist and the owner didn’t tell me he had stripped some hex screws on the saw. I’ve watched several other videos, but had not seen your method of drilling off the screw head. I’m going to try some other less invasive methods first but may resort to your method. Thanks again for helping to change my sometimes tunnel vision on how to fix something. Greetings from Maine

A lot of work! A DREMEL CUT-OFF wheel never fails me removing “buggered-up” screw heads. Just put cut-off wheel on screw head, cut to make deeper ridges & unscrew at your pleasure. This way you’re getting the entire screw out, without damaging whatever the screw holds in place. But this is better, if the screw head breaks off. Like your channel a lot! As a woman who loves tinkering, carpentry & buying every new tool out in the market, this is my kind of KZfaq channel! 🙏

Will this work with a flat-head screw? I’ve got one on an ancient outdoor faucet that is stripped and frozen in place. I’ve soaked it in PB Blaster, heated it with a welding torch, whacked it with a hammer, and nothing has worked! I even bought the Engineer pliers. The metal is soft (brass?) and the slot was very shallow to begin with, and now completely mangled. Any thoughts would be appreciated because YT videos only show the removal of stripped Philips head, not slot screws.

Awesome advice again. I tried the rubber band method and it didn't work for the reasons you stated. My bad screw is still where it was but not for long now. New gadget to add to my collection of tools, the Dead Blow Hammer, love it !

Ms. Leah, I want to take a second to say how much I appreciate your heart and information in these videos. You are insightful, kind, and encouraging! As a little return I'd like to share a tip on this topic that saved me tremendously. Instead of using a larger bit, use a bit slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw shaft and drill a little ways right through the center. Tap a torx bit into that recess, and screw the screw out. It's very simple, clean, and puts some of those torx bits to use. Thank you, so much, for sharing your experience and knowledge!

Good job! I love vintage things but they can certainly be stubborn in their senior years [ask me how I know, and why I removed all the mirrors around mt house LOL]. Also, I'm so fussy about these things, I'd have put some painter's tape around the knob at the point of using the vice grips, just to peotect the old knob from scrapes/dings etc from the grips being so close.

This is exactly what i needed! Im attempting to remake an old vanity/cabnet that has been lying around for years, its not in the best condition, but ofc i get all of the old handles/hinges out almost no problem, except for the last screw, there flat heads and its basically become a nail bc of all the dirt and damage to it, but now i can finally start restoring this cabnet!

Great tips. As usual. Especially as you calmly run through the techniques and discard them for a reason. But then there’s the moment with the vice grips where the screw shears off well below the surface. (Wound up drilling around the shaft until I could grab the screw again. Then drilled out the hole and plugged with a dowel and wooden toothpick shims. Fortunately hidden by the fixture.)

Good tips! I've also had success using left-handed drill bits. Sometimes the screw starts to back out before you get anywhere near drilling the whole head out.

Top tips as always, Leah. Would also mention screw remover bits (drill a small hole first) but the trick is remembering to bring them on the job. (That said, with a really corroded screw the head often just shears clean off and then you're back to the mole grips to get the barrel out.)

Love love love! I was probably about 15 minutes into replacing some deck boards at my parents house and found rotted boards and rusty screws. Some screws were so bad the rusted/rotted in half and I didn't even know that was a thing. Anyways I used this method for one stubborn screw and it was a breeze. I actually used a piece of an old cloth that was laying around instead of rubber but it worked like a charm. Thank you so much!

Leah! Don't forget about the Speed Out screw extractor! The extractor has saved my bacon with a couple of stripped and stuck screws.

I bought a set of the extractors after doing almost the same thing she did in video but without the lubricant. I wish she would comment here on those extractors....but certain drilling is the final method to try. I like her calm and thorough way she explains the methods she chooses.

@@seejanedrill , screw extractor techniques work even better if the drill is a left hand cutter. Sometimes the rotational force and vibration of the left hand drill bit will loosen the previously frozen screw as you start drilling the head out.

Great video! You really covered some great methods for screw removal. As a note - you can also have success using a good strong Phillips head screwdriver and tapping with a hammer and twisting. I’ve also had screws where the head just breaks off altogether! Looks like you could use a good cordless drill - I rarely ever use a corded drill anymore. Checkout ridgid tools and ridgid jobmax if you don’t already have a cordless you won’t regret it. Keep up the great videos!

That is an old knob and a old handle the knob is called a schlage wafer lock pretty old once you buff them up they come out nice. but that I would recommend that lock to be changed they're very easy to open. God bless you family and friends I enjoy seeing your videos..

@@seejanedrill yes I am retired that's why I say Enjoy your videos I still do locksmithing on the side for me at the house family members and all that and then the church I used to have my own business in New Jersey now I live in Puerto Rico but I'm planning to move back to the States.. that was very good you figured out I was a locksmith I didn't think you would have noticed that very good observation God bless you family and friends. by the way the reason I said you should change it is because you can open that with a paperclip I didn't want to say it but I will tell you you can open that with a paperclip..😀

My friends are always calling me (a woman) to come help them with one thing or another. Some of the tasks are so simple I’m embarrassed for the person asking. Someone recently asked me how to open a paint can. I had to struggle not to laugh. But, I sure as Hell don’t know everything...not by a long shot. That’s why I’m glad I just found your channel. Never occurred to me to drill into the top of a seized screw. That, and all sorts of other things you demonstrate, add to my knowledge & help keep this 68 year independent. Thank you!!

I bought a wooden display flagpole the other day with a flag attached. I want to restore it, but there's a piece of clear PVC tubing on the pole that I don't want on there, but there's also a screw preventing the tubing from sliding up and down too far. The endcap is both really nice and is held on with a strong glue, but the other end of the tubing is held in place with a screw that's a Phillips that I think I almost stripped. I'll try this method from now on for stripped screws! Thanks, Leah!😁😁😁

I just removed a bazillion screws from the kitchen cabinets hinges that were painted over and over and over. 🤦‍♂️ Decided to use a heat gun to melt the paint and then I could remove the screws. Whew. Had to use a titanium drill bit on a few but I didn’t know that slower is better. Thank you!

Excellent video Leah! I've always wondered about removing the screw heads that way. If I come across this problem, I usually WD-40 the crap out of the screw and find a screwdriver head that will fit into the damaged hole and unscrew them that way. I've been lucky, it usually works!

Leah 2 things: 1: I hope you show us the buffing process on the brass fixture and assume you will laquer it too. 2: I have to search for your videos as the notification bell does not work. I select ALL and then later it occurs to me I haven't heard from you in a while. I check the darn bell and it's on OCCAISIONAL!! You and Jimmy DiResta are the only subscriptions this happens to for me. Any suggestions? A friend suggested I unsub then sub again and set that darn bell again!! I will at least give it a try

We have a seat in our shower from an old tenant that is causing rust and grime in the shower cubicle, nothing is shifting those screws atm but I had never heard of an impact screwdriver! Going to give that a go

I m so happy I found you! I have been trying to get my husband to teach me how to use his tools so I can fix things myself. It's not going well! He says it's bad luck if I use his tools! So I have started my own tool box but I have no idea what to get. I would like to buy my own cordless drill, do u have any recommendations ? Thank you for this video. I'm doing a semi gut and have safely removed and dismantled all appliances and fixtures except a large stubborn mounted kitchen cabinet. The flathead screws holding it is slightly rusted and damaged. They are deeply imbedded in the walls. I will try again with a rubber band. If it doesn't work, I'll use the specialty tools you've listed to drill or cut into the screws to screw them out.
